All of us were holding our breaths as well. When Cookie nodded we let out sighs of relief. We tried to look away, make it seem like we weren’t watching the entire exchange. I doubt we made it very convincing.
“We’re going out on Friday,” Cookie said. Abel had made a quiet exit after shuffling back inside. There wasn’t much that he could do at this point that wasn’t a little awkward. Cookie was smiling from ear to ear.
“I’m glad for you,” I said.
“Congrats,” Lightning said, lifting his mug in celebration, though I didn’t think he cared at all either way.
“Just make sure you’re careful,” Verny cautioned. “I don’t want to see you hurt.”
“I know, and I appreciate you all the more for it,” Cookie said. She picked up Buttercup in her arms, which given the her size wasn’t the easiest task. “We’re going to have to pick out a date night outfit,” she cooed at the dog.
“I want to help with that,” I offered, and gave Verny a look.
   “I’ll help too,” she agreed.
“Hell, I’ll help too if you want it,” Lightning joked. The mood was lighter than it had been even before the dagger went missing. I flipped the sign to open, ready for a new day to start.
