  Description:

Eric Logan is twenty-one, a physics major at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and a geek. All he wants is to make it through college in one piece. If he can find a woman to share his life with, well, all the better, but he doesn't hold out much hope of that happening. He's learned the hard way that women find shy, safe men too boring to keep around for long.

While attending a party with his friend Devin, Eric meets the vampire Elizabet, who offers him a spot in her stable of blood slaves. Not long after, the lovely Gianna Brady walks into his life. With her in his heart and a job as a vampire's pet, Eric finally has the life and love he's always wanted and is eager to begin his journey through the hidden society he's now a part of, a society where blood and sex are used to cement alliances and control the violent nature of the beast within.

The world of the Vampyr isn't as easy to navigate as it appears, however, and Eric is soon lost in a whirlwind of obstacles and complications. Devin isn't content with the friendship Eric craves; Marco, Elizabet's favorite, has plans for his mistress’ newest pet that Eric isn't keen on fulfilling; and the vampire queen needs a strong ally. As he struggles to find his place in this new world, Eric is pushed to the limits of his humanity and wonders if he'll ever find his way back to it again, or if the monster he's becoming will consume him and everyone he loves in its thirst for power and blood.

  Episode 1

  A New Life

  Chapter One

I smoothed the tie down over my shirt, felt it tighten around my neck like a noose. Devin stood beside me, his lean, athletic body relaxed and still. His confidence made me nervous. I don’t know why. We hadn’t known each other that long, a couple of months maybe, but I’d always felt comfortable around him before.

He was one of those people who never had a bad word to say, never put anybody down. Laid back, polite; attractive, if you liked men. People gravitated to him like a comet to the sun, moving toward him first out of curiosity. Who is this guy? I’d heard plenty of people say it. And then, they were trapped in his pull and fell toward him in an escalating rush while he dazzled them with his charm and wit until gravity and momentum combined to sling shot them away into a different orbit, changed forever by their brush against a brighter star.

I’d just started the falling phase, too enthralled to question the pull. Hell, I’m pure hetero, not even curious about life on the other side of the fence, and I couldn’t stay away. Though, even if I wanted to do something, I wouldn’t. Devin had a steady girlfriend, a sweet young woman named Cassie to whom he seemed devoted. No chance of rocking the boat there.

When he’d asked me to attend a family party with him this weekend, I’d stuttered and hem-hawed and done everything but shuffle my feet and pull a forelock. I’d just turned twenty-one, and afterward, shame had pricked at me. Wasn’t I a little old to play the shy school boy?

Devin had smiled, a kind gesture that overcame my embarrassment, and said what a shame it would be if I missed the party of the year, and how even I deserved an evening away from my studies, and wouldn’t I like to see how the other half lives? Before I knew it, I’d agreed to go. When he’d picked me up at my apartment to drive me up, Devin insisted I pack a bag for the evening in case the party ran late.

And now here we were, inside a sprawling mansion located north of Atlanta, standing at the edge of a group of three or four dozen people, mostly men, waiting for the hostess to make an appearance. The room we were in reminded me of an old-fashioned ballroom. Its slick wooden floors and deep yellow walls gleamed softly under the light cast by the dimmed chandeliers and wall sconces. A raised platform on one end held chairs and music stands, so I had to assume there would be dancing later on, probably waltzes and minuets and things I’d never learned to do.

I jiggled the change in my pocket, rocked forward onto the balls of my feet. Most of the crowd looked as polished and sophisticated as Devin. The few women were dressed in cocktail dresses that flowed over their skins in a glamorous array of color and light. Their tinkling laughs cut through the lower registers of male voices, a soft counterpoint of feminine wile. The men moved around the room, graceful and sure in their tailored suits, clustering around the women in subtly shifting groups.

My suit was off the rack and I’d never moved gracefully in my life, thanks to parents who thought intellect more worthy of cultivation than physical prowess. I’d rectified the latter through weight-training and a daily run, though neither made coordinating my body easier. But hey, at least it burned off the Frosted Flakes and doughnuts, right?

I ran a hand over my nape and cringed when my fingers encountered the curls brushing the top of my shirt collar. I’d forgotten to get a haircut, again.

  What was I doing here?

“Relax,” Devin said. “We were all newcomers here once.”

“I thought this was your family?”

“It is.” His lips twisted into a wry smile. “Of a sort.

“Eh,” I said, confused. “Either it is or it isn’t.”

“You’ll see.” He took my elbow, as if he feared I might run at any moment. “Come on. Let me introduce you around.”

He led me to a tightly knotted cluster centered on a twenty-something woman with long, sable curls and sharp blue eyes. She wasn’t beautiful, exactly, in spite of her even features. Something lurked under the widely spaced eyes, pert nose, and bow mouth, something off. Whatever it was, it shifted and twisted, resisting my efforts to pin it down.

When conversation allowed, Devin stepped into the cluster and bowed slightly to the woman at its center. “Selena,” he said. “May I present Eric?”

“Fresh meat, Dev?” Selena’s eyes flicked down over me and her lips stretched into a knowing smile. “You always bring the good ones to Mother.”

I caught a whiff of cinnamon and lavender and a musky almost metallic undertone of woman. Something like attraction stirred in my gut, but not quite, and my eyes dropped below her face. She wore a midnight blue empire-waisted dress with a tight bodice that barely covered her nipples and pushed her breasts up until they threatened to spill over. The skin there was smooth and creamy, flawless. My breath shallowed and my tongue grew thick with the need to delve into the crease between her breasts and lick her delicious scent into me, to pull down her dress and let her nipples pop free and run my mouth over them until she moaned and begged.

Devin’s hand tightened on my elbow, pulling me out of the fantasy, and I jerked my gaze away. Heat climbed up my cheeks. Jesus. I’d been inches from acting on an urge to lick a woman’s breasts in front of forty-odd strangers.

“You can have your pick when you’re old enough to keep pets,” Devin said.

Selena wrinkled her nose in a cutesy display that intensified the off vibe and we moved away, Devin in the lead.

When we were far enough away to avoid being overheard, I asked, “Is that her real name?”

I took his soft laugh to mean no.

He introduced me to a blonde haired angel with a kind smile named Alice; to Therese, a goddess with skin the color of burnt caramel and huge green eyes; and to Marlena, another brunette who chatted and flirted with Devin in a way that led me to believe they knew each other well.

I had the good grace to keep my eyes on their faces and not on their exposed skin. When Devin managed to detach himself from Marlena, he leaned close and whispered, “You’re learning.”

His breath fanned across my ear in a tickly-tingly sensation that sent an answering stroke along my dick. My hands curled into fists and I stuffed them into my pants pockets. A couple of hours near Devin and I was ready to leap right over the sexuality fence, knock it down, and trample it into the ground.

I really needed to get laid. First thing tomorrow I’d start working on that, I promised myself, and then ditched that plan after remembering, hey, girls don’t talk to geeks. Hardly ever. I’d dated since becoming an adult, had two different girlfriends, and, yes, had sex with both of them and with a couple of other women in between. But when you’re a senior in college going through a demanding degree program in a field without a lot of women, and working every second school doesn’t consume on top of that, there’s not much hope of finding a woman to date, let alone one to have sex with.

A hush descended on the crowd. The pressure on my elbow increased under Devin’s fingers and I turned toward the room’s entrance. All I saw was the top of a woman’s head, ebony hair arranged in a fancy coiffure. People made room as she walked forward and then, she was near and the final obstacles between us faded into nothing.

She was short, maybe a head shorter than me, and lushly curved. The breath caught in my lungs. Her dress was the bright red of fresh blood. The bodice laced in front and pushed her breasts up, beautiful, pale mounds of skin, and under her flat stomach, her hips curved out in marvelous handfuls. Her skirt pooled to the floor, sliding along the polished wooden floor behind her, and parted as she walked to reveal flashes of shapely legs.

Devin’s hand brushed across my back. My eyes met hers and the blood drained from my head in a cool rush of sound and image.

A woman’s lips on my dick, the sharp prick of teeth, the suction of her mouth sliding up and down my erection until I came in the hot, wet beauty of her touch.

“Bring him back to me upon his twenty-first birthday.” A sensuous laugh. “I like my pets ripe.”

The coppery taste of blood in my mouth, and then a sinking black void.

My head grew light and I swayed. Devin clutched my waist, steadying me.

“Breathe, Eric,” he said. “It’s just the compulsion breaking. You’ll be fine in a minute.”

  Compulsion? “The hell,” I said.

“I’ll explain later,” he said, and let go.

I tried to find my balance and bobbled. The woman stood mere inches from me. She held out her hand and I took it and pressed it to my lips in a chaste kiss. Her dark chocolate eyes met mine and I fell into them like a feather on the outer edges of a vortex, softly swirling downward. Her name whispered through my mind. Elizabet. If I could just get closer, close enough to touch, to taste her mouth and her skin…

Devin’s hand clutched at my elbow and I came to abruptly, and found myself leaning into Elizabet, preparing to kiss her plump, red-slicked lips. I jerked back and pinned my gaze to the far wall over her head, too shaken to blush over the clumsy need.

“Eric, dearling, I’ve been dying to see you again.”

  “We’ve met before,” I said.

It wasn’t a question, exactly. Memories stirred in my head like a beast awakening from hibernation, though I didn’t credit them as being real since they hadn’t been there before she’d walked into the room.

“Of course.” She touched a playful hand to my tie. One finger slipped into the opening of my shirt, a cool touch of flesh, no less stirring for its brevity or the barrier of my undershirt. “And now you’re all grown up, ripe for the taking. Devin always has the best taste in pets.”

Pets. Well, that was the first time I’d ever been compared to an animal. I rolled the idea around, trying to figure out if I should be insulted or not.

“And he shall join us in my chambers after the meal.” Her eyes flicked to Devin under the coy tilt of her lashes. “If our newest addition agrees, yes?”

  “Of course,” Devin agreed smoothly.

His hand still rested on my elbow, thumb stroking the fabric of my jacket lightly. I couldn’t really feel it. It was more like a tease of sensation, my mind filling in what it thought should be there.

Elizabet turned to speak with others and I yanked my elbow out of Devin’s grasp.

  “What’s going on?” I asked.

“Food first.” His mouth tilted into a knowing smile. “Trust me.”

  Oddly enough, I did.

  Chapter Two

I followed Devin’s lead. A liveried servant (who knew they still had those?) announced dinner, and everyone drifted into a banquet room half the size of my parents’ house. Three long tables ran the length of the room, set elegantly with bone china, antique silverware, and fragile crystal.

Devin escorted me to the central table, to the chair left of its head. When he made to move away, I caught his arm. “Where are you going?”

“I’ll be at the other end.” He placed his hand on mine and squeezed, and the fences came down again. His eyes cut to Elizabet, who was being escorted in by a middle-aged gentleman, a flick of movement so quick I nearly missed it. “Treat her as you would the woman of your dreams.”

Well, that wouldn’t be hard, since she was pretty damn close to any man’s wet dream.

  “We’ll talk later,” he promised.

Devin’s hand squeezed mine again and I let go so he could take his seat. Butterflies danced in my stomach. Elizabet’s escort led her to the head of the table, head bent attentively t
o her bright chatter, like a man who lived solely to hear her speak. When they reached me, Elizabet held her hand out to me and I took it, remembering Devin’s advice.

“Eric, dearling, this is Marco, my best and favorite,” she said. “Should you need anything during your stay, please let him know. Devin will guide you, of course, but Marco is in charge of the well-being of all my pets.”

Marco bowed over her hand, touching his forehead to its back while Elizabet looked on with an indulgent smile. No, not indulgent. Fond? Tender? I couldn’t quite pin down the emotion.

When Marco stood erect, his eyes flickered to the chair at the head of the table. It only took me a couple of seconds to catch on and pull it out for Elizabet. She sat and I helped her get comfortable before bowing over her hand and sitting down.

“You have charming manners, dearling.” Elizabet spread a crisp cloth napkin over her lap. “Such a rarity in today’s generation.”

  “Ah, thank you.”

Would she think less of me if I told her the truth, that my manners were due more to being a quick learner than anything?

The first course was served by stoic servants bearing heavy trays around the room. Elizabet chatted prettily, drawing me into the conversation around her. No matter who her attention was on, her hand rested on the table near Marco. They seemed devoted to one another. Flashes of memory spurted through my head from time to time, of Elizabet giving me the best blow job of my life. The two images were difficult to reconcile, Elizabet’s devotion to Marco and her mouth on my dick.

Devin had promised a talk after supper. Elizabet seemed like a great topic.

As the meal progressed, with one course following the next in an efficient parade of servants and dishes, I observed the dynamics between the party’s participants, the little currents I could sense but not see. When I was ten, my parents took me to the Outer Banks on vacation. I’d stood at the edge of the Atlantic, awed by its vastness, and let the water lap over my feet. The current had pulled hard at my legs, making me sway with each ebb until Mom pulled me out of the water.
