She waved him off. “Yeah, yeah, good. Must have had something stuck in my throat.” She looked at the man in line. “My apologies,” she said.
Her hand trembled slightly as she scrawled a short and general message, thanking JD for the support. She closed it and handed it back. He thanked her and went to walk away. “JD. What’s that short for?” she asked.
The man cast a glance over his shoulder. “Jennifer Decker.”
“Oh,” she replied, breaking into a smile. Her fears subsided. “So it’s not for you?”
He returned to the table. “No, it’s a gift for my sister. She’s not well so I said I would come and get it signed for her.”
Kelly smiled. “That’s very thoughtful. So you haven’t read it, yourself?”
He grimaced and looked around and then leaned in and whispered. “No. I haven’t. No offense, but uh… it’s really not my kind of genre. I’m more into sci-fi.”
With that she burst out laughing and he smiled back.
She wagged her finger at him as she took a book from the next person in line.
“Honesty. I like that.”
And just like that the guy melted back into the crowd, just another face, just another reader, but fortunately, this time… not a fan.
