  Around lunchtime tomorrow, the lad would come in and say: ‘About this abuse case, I’m not sure we traced everyone involved.’

  Davey would nod. Yeah?

  ‘There’s an older kid, taking it sideways from Ford and Halliday.’

  And what Davey planned to say: ‘So? Who really gives a fuck? Whichever way you look at it, he’s got to be under twenty-one. The law’s changed now, but at the time it makes him underage. On the other hand, he’s not a juvenile, so what was he doing at the home at all? It’s too fucking untidy. Which is why we drop it.’
