A Perfect Question Page 8

by Zoe Dawson

  “Push, River,” Doc Rust said.

“If I push any harder, Doc, I’m going to deliver my spleen,” I huffed.

“Is that supposed to be funny?” Brax said, looking alarmed and as exhausted as I felt. This was the third and final baby and I was glad there had only been three. Good Lord, had I said only three. Babies. Sons. Triplets.

  “C’mon, sugar, you’ve got this.”

“How about I take your place and you try to push a basketball out of your groin while I encourage you?”

  “Doesn’t sound like fun. Pass.”

I laughed and he blotted my brow.

  “I love you, River.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not too fond of you at the moment.”

“I can see the head. Push harder.”

I bore down and gave it everything I had, and our third son was born. I collapsed back as Brax and Doc Rust set the three boys on my abdomen and, one by one, they turned their heads to look at me and Brax. Tears were running down his cheeks.

“Now you can tell me what you have decided for names.”

It was something I had wanted to keep close to my heart until they were born. In keeping with the three Outlaw brothers who loved and supported each other, no matter what, I could only hope my sons had the same kind of connection, the same rascally quality. I know his brothers were waiting to welcome their three identical nephews into the family. Already it was as if their names fit. I rubbed a tiny foot and said. “This is Beckett. I stroked the little leg on my right. “This is Bane, and this little guy, last, but never least is…” I looked up at Brax and cupped his jaw. “Brody.”

He sighed and our gazes met and held. Our joy was complete. “I love you, River Pearl Outlaw.”

“I love you, Braxton. We’ve come a long way, and we’ve got a long way to go.” I slipped my hand into his. “But we’ll go together…huckleberry.”

  About the Author

Zoe Dawson is the alter ego of multi-published, bestselling author Karen Anders. Karen started her career because her grandmother gave her a book to read. That book made her fall in love with romance and started her on the trek to get published. She achieved that goal in 1996 with the publication of Jennifer’s Outlaw for Silhouette. Even with many books under her belt, she can't wait for that next idea, that next exquisite sentence and, of course, the next hero and heroine who fall in love.
