Following Polly Page 29

by Karen Bergreen

  Charlie doesn’t say anything.

Well, I’m thinking, spit it out. Just say that you can’t see a future or you don’t like me or I’m ugly or something.

“Do you want to rest at my house?” he asks softly.

Now it’s my turn not to say anything.

“I moved all of your things into my room.”

  I’m shocked.

“But I don’t have any things in your house.”

“While you were in the hospital, Jean let me into your apartment and helped me get some of your stuff. Actually, she selected it. I just packed and carried it.”

“My stuff is in your apartment.” I don’t even consider asking him what he would have done if this conversation had gone differently. It never would have.

  And he knows it.

“I got you something else,” Charlie tells me.

  “What is it?”

“A DVR. And I’ve been watching all your programs for the past month. I’ve seen sixty-eight episodes of Law and Order. You’re right. It is a good show.”

My stuff is at Charlie’s house and he has become a TV watcher. Maybe Kovitz was right and I’m in heaven.

  “I can’t believe this.”

“I can’t either. But as you said, I love you.”

Without thinking, I turn to Charlie, and I kiss him. And he kisses me back.

  For five minutes.

“Let’s get you to bed, Alice Teakle.”

  “Okay, Walter Redwin.”

  “Call me Charlie.”
