I fixate on the picture. “Oh God. Look at the mouth. It’s like a wide-mouth fish with razor-sharp teeth.”
Rumbling in the distance interrupts us. We stare at one another before Carm breaks the quiet. Realizing the ugly truth, Carm shares what no one wants to hear: “We didn’t kill it.”
I speak up, “Bright side, we stopped the sacrifice.”
Carmilla says, “Dark side, the sacrifice should have appeased it. That didn’t happen, so now the light is mad. Am I close?”
Perry cries out, “Why can’t anything be normal?”
“Because Silas,” I say.
“Truth,” LaFontaine says.
“Now what are we gonna do?” I ask.
“All I want to do is be in the library with J. P.”
“You know he’s a hologram, right?” Carm asks.
“Don’t judge him,” LaFontaine wails.
“Can we focus on the bigger picture right now?” I ask, mania setting in.
LaFontaine gets serious. “It’s obvious. Back to war we go. Defeat the evil. Take back our campus once more. I’ll get J. P.”
Perry keeps shaking her head. “No. No. No. A thousand times no!”
I yell, “Bring it on!”
Carm just shakes her head. “Here we go again. Why can’t we just have a nice vampire–normal girl relationship?”
