Baste ribs with sauce during the last 10 minutes of grilling to prevent sauce from burning.
Natural Easter Egg Dyes
Although Lucy used dried ingredients like turmeric for her dye packets, you can easily whip up natural dyes at home.
Red – Mix 2 cups of grated raw beets with 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Boil with 2 cups of water for about 15 minutes (other options include frozen cranberries and strong Red Zinger tea).
Yellow to Gold – Simmer 3 large handfuls of yellow/brown onion skins in 3 cups of water for about 15 minutes. Alternately, boil 2 or 3 tablespoons of ground turmeric or chamomile in 2 cups of water for about 15 minutes.
Blue – Boil 1 pound of crushed frozen blueberries in 2-3 cups of water for about 15 minutes. For lavender shades, use three cups of red cabbage leaves instead.
Notes:
Make the individual dyes in 3 different nonreactive saucepans. For a uniform color, strain the dye mixtures through cheesecloth or a fine strainer. If you prefer mottled, or tie-dyed eggs, leave the ingredients in the pan with the cooked beets, onion skins, or blueberries, then put the eggs directly in the pan to soak with the cooked ingredients. (The longer you soak the eggs the deeper the color will be.) You can also experiment by combining the different dyes in coffee cups to get different colors. To make designs, use a white crayon prior to dyeing.
