Assignment and Dispatching of Forces for the Rebuilding of the 2nd Army of the West

The two depot squadrons of the Akhtyrsk Hussars, as well as the depot squadrons of the Karkov, Tchernigov, New Russia, and Kiev Dragoons, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Semek, were dispatched to their parent units. In addition, on 5 September, Lieutenant Colonel Pavlischchev escorted two depot squadrons from the Isoum and Elisabethgrad Hussar Regiments, and the Pskof, Moscow, Ingremanland, and Kargopol Dragoon Regiments.

Example of French Regimental Strengths 15 December 1812

Extract from the Roll Call of 24 December 1812 V Corps of Eugene

Russian Casualties at Borodino 1st Cavalry Corps

Note: These strength figures are based on the number of battalions or squadrons known to be in the battle and the normal full strength organization. It should be realized that the Russian regiments were tremendously under strength by the time they reached Borodino. These figures are presented solely to provide an idea of the type of punishment the Russians received during this battle.

Note: The artillery material losses are from contemporary Russian source documents. The losses they indicate are not always consistent. Various listings will show fewer horse collars, bridles, and halters missing than draft horses lost. It would seemingly imply that the Russian soldiers scrambled about gathering up the equipment from the dead horses rather than fighting the French. In other instances it shows more horse equipment lost than horses, which would seemingly indicate that horses were stripped of their halters, etc., and led out of the battle. In addition, the casualties do not seem high enough in view of the various commentaries made by contemporaries, unless the Russians suffered a tremendous desertion-under-fire rate and, after the battle, all these men returned to their colors. It is more likely that these records are not as accurate as one might wish.
