But later, he was knocking on her door and hoping she would talk with him.
"Hi Sam, what's up? It's getting late…" she began.
"I know. But I need to talk to you." Sam frowned.
The screen door was between them, but she finally opened it and let him in. "Come on in, want some coffee?"
"Yeah, that would be nice."
She began making it, but Sam was silent.
"Well," she finally said when he didn't say a thing.
"Wendy," he began. But the words wouldn't come.
He finally stood up and then fell on one knee and took her hand in his.
"I'm so in love with you, I'm going crazy. Wendy…will you marry me?" he asked.
Wendy's eyes rounded on him and she seemed to stare deep into his soul for a long moment. Then she burst out in a smile that lit the room with her sunshine.
"I thought you'd never ask!" she gushed. "Yes, yes, I'll marry you."
"I love you, more than my life. I can't live without you," he said, still not realizing she had accepted his proposal.
She took his head in her hands, holding him so he would look at her. "I love you with all my heart, Sam Jamison. Yes…I will marry you…."
And then she fell on her knee and into his arms.
The kiss was warm, inviting and everything he had hoped for. "I'll make you happy. You won't be rich, but you will be happy."
She leaned into him, letting him hold her. "You already have…oh Sam…"
He smothered her with kisses now and held her for a long time there on the floor, in his arms.
"I thought you'd never ask me," she admitted through warm inviting kisses.
"I finally got my head on straight." He moved to pull the ring out of his pocket.
She gasped when he opened the little black box that held her future. "Oh Sam…it's so beautiful….so exquisite."
"You like it?"
"Yes…did you pick it out yourself?"
"Yeah, it took me most of the day to find the one I wanted. But when I saw it, I knew it was for you." He kissed her again.
"It's perfect," she cried out as she sighed in his arms and flashed the ring on her finger that he had put there.
"I'll always love you, Wendy…to my dying day," he promised.
"You promise never to leave me?" she asked.
"Leaving you would be like cutting off my right arm." He smiled into her hair.
"I want lots of babies…" She giggled.
"Me too…a whole house full." He laughed.
They cuddled for a long while, kissing, holding each other and making promises.
"Stand by me, Sam…" She smiled up into his shining eyes.
"Forever…" he promised.
