Master…
Moments right after his creation flashed in his mind. Then glimpses of fighting, both human and robotic invaders. Journeying through a forest. Locking eyes with-
Master!
Blitz’s eyes snapped open, and his senses rushed back to him. He extended all four of his paws, and small, titanium-strength blades extended from his paws. His grappling hook began to wind up slowly as his systems rebooted. By the time he was fully retracted, he had gained at least a weak semblance of movement. With some effort, he pulled himself up and slammed his paws into the cliff until the blades stuck. The spikes at the end of his tail retracted back into place as he slowly climbed, each foothold a struggle to find, each movement calculated and strenuous.
Finally, he almost reached the top of the cliff, the land that had crumbled, creating a gentler slope for him to climb. He quietly made his way up, and froze when he heard stiff movements ahead of him.
Gazing behind a cluster of bushes, he saw more than two dozen Ribiyar and a man with glowing eyes dragging two bodies with them as they enter the forest beyond. One was the Dark Serpent, still unconscious from his wounds, and the other was…
Master!
Everything within him screamed to charge forward and slay all those who had hurt his master.
Logic processing flawed. Odds of survival: negligible.
His restrictive programming flared up, baring him from rushing after them when there were too many unknown variables at play. He only knew about the forces he saw; there were likely to be many more en route now to secure their prisoners.
The unknowns are irrelevant. I must save him.
Negative. Sufficient firepower is not available to guarantee mission success.
I have to save him.
This unit was created and designed for mass destruction. Search and rescue are not standard procedure.
But I mus-
Observations and deduction lead to the conclusion that Master Jack Vade is dead.
Blitz shook his head vehemently, refusing what one half of him insisted and the other couldn’t afford to believe.
No...
NOT AGAIN!!!
Blitz hissed widely, his blades shot out of his paws, and he clawed widely at the ground, his torment fueling him harder and harder.
No no no no no no no no no…
At last, he slumped to the ground, his batteries drained from the exhaustion. He laid his head down, his eyes losing their crimson hue as they slowly closed, his left paw clawing absently at the ground. He let his mind drift off, fully content to let his thoughts fall into the abyss, when he was rudely awakened by a muffled, metallic ringing. He tried to ignore it, but the noise continued and slowly grew louder, until he finally opened his eyes and turned toward the sound.
His paw, which had continued digging at the upturned ground, had hit a metallic object lightly buried beneath it.
Curious, Blitz used both his paws to move aside the rest of the debris until he uncovered the rest of the dark-purple blade handle. His eyes widened at his discovery, and his mind surged back to life. A plan slowly began to weave and form together.
He slowly extended a paw, fumbling with the weapon, until he found what he was looking for. His paw depressed a button on the handle, and the device vibrated as the small wings on the sides shot out small streams of energy, the fully extended Phantom Blade glowed in all of its brilliance.
He stared into the light cast by the weapon, completely mesmerized by its power, and his eyes sparked crimson once more.
Sufficient firepower acquired. Success rate has risen into acceptable levels. Action authorized.
The spikes at the end of his tail extended, and he lowered it down over the Phantom Blade. It grasped the weapon, and he slowly lifted it up into the air, still mesmerized by its power.
If I cannot rescue Master, my purpose - mass destruction - will soon be fulfilled.
And so concludes the second book in the Defenders Trilogy, Perseverance.
The trilogy will continue with Book Three: Defiance.
As the story so far reaches its height,
