When she got to the picture of an older couple, her smile faltered. Maria couldn’t place exactly where she knew them from, especially since the picture was so old, but their faces were very familiar. Wrapping her arms around her stomach, Maria stared at the picture until Jax came inside.
“You good, boo?”
She nodded absently. When his arms wrapped around her from behind, Maria smiled with one side of her mouth as he placed a kiss on her neck.
“Baby… who are these people to you?”
“Shit, I don’t know them. Those are my mama’s parents, but I’ve never met them before.”
Turning in his arms she asked, “Why not?”
He shrugged and licked his lips. “They fell out when I was born. Never came around.”
Looking back at the picture, Maria’s body weakened in recollection. Recollection of who they were. Recollection of why Jax was so familiar to her. Why he spoke to her soul with such ease as he did. Shaking her head, she turned back around completely to the picture.
“I’m about ninety percent sure that’s Malibu’s grandparents, Jax. The ones I told you he was sent to Memphis to stay with.”
“Nah. Can’t be. I would know if he was related to me.”
Chuckling softly, Maria pushed his arms down from her body. “That’s them. And I need to know exactly who in the fuck Malibu is to you. Because I’ve always said that you look like him and if he’s…” Her chuckle came out louder this time. Placing her hands on her hips, Maria inhaled a deep yet shaky breath as Jax pressed her into the wall.
“My mama is in the kitchen I’m sure. We can go ask her and clear this shit up right now. But I’m telling you you’re confused, boo. He can’t be related to me.”
As she stared into his eyes, her nostrils flared, and teeth gritted. They looked so fucking much alike. Really, the only differences were the shapes of their heads, lips, and the fact that Malibu had a birthmark in the center of his neck. Sure… Jax looked like what Malibu would have looked like if he’d been graced to become a man, but there was no mistaking their resemblance.
Maria’s eyes watered as she considered the worst. That the man she was falling in love with now was related to the man she loved then. There were so many questions that would have to follow… not just for her… but for Jax too. And as he led her down the hallway, Maria wasn’t sure if she could handle those answers now – or ever.
To be continued…
