I look down, up, everywhere. I can’t believe we’re doing this, right here, right now. Lily Hunter is giving me dating advice. Well, at least it’s less boring than deer tracking.
“How?” I reluctantly say, succumbing to my curiosity.
“Inside information. Top secret.”
With a snort, I start walking again. “You mean, gossip? Lily, that’s dumb.”
She jogs after me, Luke trotting along. “Do I look like someone who gossips, Laurie?”
And then she actually winks at me. Like, for real. I shake my head, trying to hold back a laugh. This Lily, she’s different. Ever since she came back from that D.C. trip, she’s happier—funny, even. At first, I was disturbed by it. Some of my friends had this theory that she got replaced by an alien or a robot, but now, I kinda like her this way.
“Okay, what’s the top secret info you got?”
With a playful grin, Lily takes a folded piece of paper out of her pocket. “He writes poems.”
God, I hope she didn’t sneak inside his house and searched his underwear drawer for that. That would be so embarrassing, so beyond embarrassing, I would need to move to a hut in the middle of the woods and never come back.
“So?” That’s not news to me. Yeah, he’s a little lame and artsy, but I kinda like that about him, you know? It’s cute.
She licks her lips, trying hard not to laugh at my crush’s behavior. “And some of them are... about you.”
My cheeks are on fire. This is so embarrassing... but strangely fun. “Oh my God! What does it say?” I try to snatch the paper from her grasp, but she’s too fast.
“Help me catch this deer and I’ll read it to you.”
I roll my eyes. “That’s not fair. Come on!”
“Nope. That’s the deal. So, let’s go,” she says while racing away. “Hurry up!”
I look up to the sky, a small white dot crossing the wide blue. That’s the second airplane I’ve see this month. Things are about to change again. After shaking my head, I follow Lily deeper into the woods.
