“You said twins?” Fletcher asked.
“That’s right. As I mentioned on your last visit, you were bigger than I’d expect, but now I know why.”
“Can you tell their sex?” Abby asked.
“Not yet, but soon if they are turned the right way. And.” The doctor looked at Fletcher. “I think your wife is a little more than five months pregnant.”
“That’s not possible,” Abby said. “We used protection until shortly before the wedding.”
“Honey.” Fletcher leaned close and kissed her. “Sometimes, what we used fails. And I for one am not sorry a bit. I can’t believe we’re having twins, what fun. Could the nurse bring my mother in here? She’ll be so excited.”
It had seemed only a few seconds before his mom arrived. “It isn’t anything serious, is it?” she asked anxiously.
“Not unless you consider twins serious,” Abby said in a dry tone, but with a smile on her face.
“Twins! How wonderful.” She stepped to Abby’s side. “And don’t you worry. You’ll have so much help, you’ll tell us to go home.”
Abby hugged her, and then kissed Fletch. “I feel like I fell down a rabbit hole to a whole new wonderful world.”
“Well, if you did, honey, I’m never letting you go back.”
Just then a glow of sunlight shone through the small window and on Abby. “Ah, a blessing on you and your babies,” Mrs. Garrison said.
“My blessing was being rescued by Fletcher and his family.”
Both women hugged and cried. Fletch looked at the doctor.
“Don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal. Your wife and mother understand, we men don’t.”
Fletcher walked toward the two women he loved most in the world. “Let me in on the hug,” he said as the doctor tiptoed out the door.
