by Sean Fletcher

  “The nerdy wizard dude?”

Kaylee lightly punched him. “The smart, strong, handsome wizard dude.”

  “But nerdy.”

  “…but nerdy.”

If Edwin was surprised to find Reese there when he opened the door he quickly hid it, for which Kaylee was eternally grateful. He’d dressed in nice jeans and a designer shirt, his unruly hair moderately tamed. He was carrying a bouquet of flowers.

“I’ll take those,” Reese said, plucking them from Edwin’s hands and handing them to Kaylee. “Bit old fashioned, don’t you think?”

“If you knew anything about me, you’d know I’m old school,” Edwin said. He did a quick check down the street. “I’d leave now. Most of the Protectors are still on assignment in Rothsberg, and the ones around this section are switching stations for the next ten minutes.”

“I appreciate it,” Reese said. “I was just going.”

He stuck out a hand, which Edwin took. Reese pumped it up and down, maybe a little harder than necessary.

“Make sure my little sister has fun.”

  “I will,” Edwin promised.

“You hurt her, I hurt you,” Reese added.

  “Reese!” Kaylee admonished.

“I completely believe you,” Edwin said.

Reese nodded at them both and threw his stuff in his car. Then he was backing out, giving one final wave before disappearing around the corner.

“He didn’t mean that,” Kaylee said.

“Oh, I think he did.” Edwin grinned. “I could take him, though.” His eyes slowly widened as he took her in. “You look incredible, by the way. Not sure if I mentioned that earlier.”

Kaylee did a little twirl. “You didn’t, but I could hear it a few more times.”

“I’ll be sure to say it a few more times.”

“You’re not looking too bad yourself.”

Edwin held out his arm. “Shall we?”

Kaylee took it, and together they walked out into the night.

  About the Author

Sean Fletcher was born in the broiling, arid state some people lovingly refer to as Texas. He is the Amazon bestselling and award-winning author of YA and middle grade sci-fi and fantasy, including the I Am Phantom, Depths of Darkness, and Heir of Dragons series, in addition to other forthcoming books whose characters will not give him a moment's peace until they get their turn in the spotlight. When not making things up and putting them on paper, he can be found hiking, biking, or traveling, sometimes all at the same time.

The setting, characters and story used in this book are completely fictitious and come from the author’s imagination. Any similarity to real persons, living or dead, is coincidental and are not intended by the author.
