“I don’t have time,” Bleddyn snapped. “The longer Niall is left alive, the longer there is a challenge to my place as Ri. I’ve sent someone to flush him out. Someone he will trust. Your only job will be to use your men to spring the trap once my fool of a brother walks into it.”

Regulus clenched his hands into fists, his lips pressed together. Kyros remained silent as well, eying Fiadh with a wariness that he would be wise to keep if he knew what was good for him.

“Fine,” Regulus said through clenched teeth. “Have it your way. I still get my land in the end.”

Bleddyn forced himself to ignore Regulus’ petulance. The land he had promised the other man was the only thing keeping his cousin loyal. Regulus and Kyros retreated back to their tents with the agreement that the details of the plan would be discussed first thing in the morning. Mercenaries and warriors flitted around the camp, erecting Bleddyn and Fiadh’s accommodations for the night. The two of them stood near the fire at the camp’s center while they waited, a few of Bleddyn’s warriors lingering nearby. He didn’t fully trust the mainlanders who filled the encampment. Kyros and his men were loyal to coin; the warriors of Seabhac were loyal to him.

You still wish to challenge Cigfran over her, Fiadh said, stroking one of her birds, her gaze on the fire.

Bleddyn tensed, his chest tightening. I have promised Cigfran that she will be brought to our cause. I will use her to get to Arth.

Fiadh snorted, her mouth turning down, but her voice wasn’t the one that Bleddyn heard in response. The chilling tone that filled his thoughts belonged to Cigfran alone.

You had better, the Raven Spirit said, or I will be swift to remind you of who now owns you.

Bleddyn swallowed hard, trying to ignore the painful tingle in his hand that started along his black scars. Ciara would yield to him and Niall would die. His very soul was on the line if he failed.

The story continues in The Ascendant…

Can the Raven Spirit be stopped or will it finally get what it longs for?

  Acknowledgements

It takes a village to bring a book together and I’m so lucky to have such a good one!

As always, thanks goes to my husband for reading every draft, helping me fix all those fight scenes (and there were a lot in this one!), and being my number one supporter, even on the bad days when my body just doesn’t cooperate. You are the best caregiver, friend and lover a woman could ask for.

To Susan, this one stretched me in a lot of ways and I cannot thank you enough for your help and support in sculpting the rough manuscript I sent you into this wonderful story. Thank you for your patience, your kindness and for catching all those moments my “brain fog” got the better of me.

To Tom, thank you for taking my words and creating beautiful imagery. It is always so fun to see the world of Pern Coen come to life through your eyes and you have done an absolutely amazing job on this series!

To my ARC Reader Team, thank you all for being willing to carve out time to read & review. Your support is invaluable to me and I greatly appreciate it.

To all of my readers, thank you! Your continued support helps me bring more stories to you. Thank you for loving Pern Coen and the characters that fill it as much as I do.
