Even though Eh Quest had been able to see the Shadow People all his life, he’d hidden this from the others. He was a hunter, that’s all he’d ever wanted to be, not a Speaker. Even when the world turned to chaos and the clan angry, he knuckled down, determined hunting was the only way he could help save them all. He was thankful Mother Raven refused to let him see patterns: because if he could see patterns, he was doomed to the frightening life of a Speaker, dealing with the Shadow World and leading The People.

Mother Raven watched Eh Quest grow and knew it was time. His destiny was to save The People and the world for eternity. Yet having a destiny didn’t mean you’d actually achieve it. Having a destiny didn’t even mean you’d try. And Eh Quest was the wrong shape as a hunters spear. He would need retouching to scallop the edges he needs. Mother Raven didn’t know if he’d survive that change. There was only one way to find out.

Mother Raven launched herself from the sacred oak and into the world of The People.
