I slipped my hand into his, weaving our fingers together, and led him closer to the Gate. The light glowed brighter the closer he got. I watched his face more closely than I had ever watched anything. I could see the acceptance relax his pose.
“I’ll be waiting for you,” he vowed, turning his face to look meaningfully into my eyes.
“I know you will,” I said.
He cupped my face in his hand and pulled me close for one last kiss.
“I love you more than anything,” he whispered.
“Not more than I love you,” I whispered back. And, still kissing him, I pushed him into the light. His lips vanished, and I was standing there by myself, leaning into the portal whose light was no longer shining as brightly; it had gotten what it wanted.
“See you soon,” I said to nothing, and closed the Gate.
I was alone now, but I knew that as long as Killian’s love existed, I would never be lonely.
