Jessie's Child Page 15

by Lois Faye Dyer

She stared at him, unable to answer. Could she marry him when he didn’t love her? Was great sex—no, actually, it was fantastic sex—enough to make a marriage work when only one of them was in love?

“I’m not sure we can make a marriage last without love, Zach.”

His eyelids lowered and she caught the flash of pain in his eyes.

“I know you think great sex and sharing a child is enough to keep us together, Zach, but I just don’t know if it will. And if and when I marry, I need to know there’s love on both sides.” Her voice broke, tears threatening.

“You don’t think it’s possible you could grow to love me?” His voice was gravelly.

“I already do love you,” she said, swiping at the tears with frustration. “That’s not the point. I think we should go on as we are and see how things develop.”

He caught her hands and held them still, glaring at her. “What do you mean, that’s not the point? If you love me and I love you, then I don’t see the problem.”

  “You love me?”

“Yes, damn it, I love you. And for the record, I don’t want to go on as we are. I want to marry you. I want us living together permanently with Rowdy sleeping down the hall and you in my bed every night.”

“You do?” she repeated, dumbstruck by the heat of annoyance and arousal in his eyes.

“Yes, I do. Now say yes.”

“Yes.” She smiled at him, charmed.

“Thank God.” His lips hovered just above hers, his eyes narrowing over her. “Are you always going to be this cooperative?’

  “No.”

“Good. I’d hate to be bored.” And he took her mouth while one hand shoved her T-shirt higher to cup her breast in an act of pure possession.

That will certainly never happen, Jessie thought blissfully, tugging at his shirt.
