Dance with Destiny Page 21

by Becky Lower

Raoul moved to her side as they fought to bring their breathing back to normal. He cupped her cheek and brought her lips to his.

"I now can comprehend the meaning of true contentment. And it is all due to you."

"So you're no longer the angry young man you were when you arrived? The one your grandfather banished from his camp?"

"I am angry still, but not at the way my life has turned out. I am angry at the way the children are teased when they go into town. At the way people talk behind their hands about you. You would assume being in a church would make people more respectful. Yet they talk, every Sunday when we show up, so you can talk to your God."

"But have you noticed the way the women stare at you? They are envious of me, because you are so handsome. They only wish they had my good fortune to lie beside you each night."

Her hand glided down his chest. "The children are strong and will survive the teasing, as you and your siblings have done. You are teaching them good skills they can take into adulthood. Hannah became quite the little horsewoman while we visited your father's ranch. And Jacob is becoming a great hunter."

  "But is it enough?"

Susannah moved over him, caressing his shaft, which was already hardening again. "As long as you warm my bed at night, we can be strong enough to withstand anything the townspeople throw our way. Now, make love to me once more before we fall asleep."

"Once more will never be enough."

He closed his eyes, immersing himself in the sensations rolling through his body as Susannah took his shaft into her mouth. His skin tingled, his nerve endings shot off little sparks at her touch. He never thought he would feel this complete again. Yet, here he was, with a wife and a family. And another child on the way. A son. He no longer needed to be envious of his brother. He had everything he needed for a good life.

For the rest of his life, he would thank the gods above, his gods, for leading him to this little spit of land on a mountaintop in Ohio. Life may be hard here, but if he could lie beside Susannah every night, and let her warmth cover him, he'd put up with the work it took to make this farm successful. He had everything he had ever longed for.

  And then some.
