  The beep of the monitor woke me up. I wanted to shoot up, protect myself from the gunman, but my body wouldn't react to my demands.

  "Honey, you're awake."

  My eyes focused on my mother's worried face.

  "You gave us quite a scare." She caressed my face. "I'm so glad you're okay."

  Before I could ask what happened, Tom walked in struggling to hold my baby boy, Caleb. Blaire rushed to my side.

  "Mom, I was so scared." She sobbed into my shoulder.

  "Thank God, you're back," said Tom. "I don't know what I would've done without you. You do so much for us.

  "You're right," I whispered. "I do. And things are going to change."
