“No. Just what I told you. Danielle thought telling her everything—” she paused a moment and glanced at Brian “—like Walt and I did with you, wasn’t necessary and frankly would probably cause more problems. This is enough for Laura to take in.”
“She believed it?” Brian asked.
“I guess watching that boulder fly up in the air on its own and explode was kinda convincing.”
“I’m glad it was Laura and not Kelly.”
“Yeah, I’m not sure Joe would believe even if he saw the Forgotten Women of Marymoor himself. And now that Lily has the time frame for when they stopped by the foundation office, Ian can make up a story about how they stopped by after they got back from dinner to pick up something. I guess he’s going to somehow work it into a conversation before Kelly comes out and asks him about it.”
“Should we check out the temperature?” Brian asked.
Heather gave him a nod and then walked with Brian through the open gate. Once through, they stood there for a moment.
“No temperature change,” Heather noted.
“Maybe they are gone.”
“Cool. Danielle’s exorcism was a success.”
Brian grinned and looked over at Heather. “I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”
Heather looked at Brian. “What?”
“Would you like to go to Joe and Kelly’s wedding with me?”
Laura accepted Lily’s explanation, and the sisters spent the next three days together, with Laura helping prepare for Connor’s birthday party on Wednesday afternoon. Lily didn’t feel it necessary to move Connor’s party to a Saturday, because most of the guests didn’t have jobs to go to—or had the day off—and the party was going to be an afternoon barbecue on the beach, so even Evan and Eddy Junior could attend after school that day.
Since Danielle and Walt’s encounter with the spirits of Marymoor on Saturday morning, the mediums—save for Evan—had visited the property, and all agreed the ghosts had moved on. When Eva stopped by the day before Connor’s birthday, she confirmed their suspicion.
The weather on Connor’s birthday proved ideal for an outdoor cookout. They brought extra chairs and tables over from Marlow House and from Chris’s and Heather’s. Family and friends gathered on the patio and beach behind Lily and Ian’s house, visiting, playing Frisbee, and enjoying the refreshments before Ian and Chris started up the grill.
“You think they’re really gone?” Adam asked Danielle. He and Melony stood away from the rest of the group with Danielle. She had just given Adam and Melony the same story Lily had told Laura.
“I think so. It feels different over there,” Danielle said.
“I could tell by Ian’s attitude when we got here; he doesn’t seem to have a problem with his parents building on the lot now,” Adam said with relief.
“Do you think that’s true, what Walt found out about those women?” Melony asked.
“Very possible. But it’s only a theory, piecing together the information he found,” Danielle said, not able to tell Melony, Randal had been the story’s primary source.
An hour later, as the group gathered around the barbecue while Chris and Ian handed out burgers, Brian Henderson showed up at the party. Lily looked at Brian as he walked their way. She flashed him a smile and shouted, “I’m glad you could make it.” He had just gotten off work.
Joe and Kelly sat with Laura at a nearby picnic table and looked at Brian. Joe, burger in hand, gave Brian a wave and pointed to the empty spot at their table.
Heather, who sat at the next table over, stood up and walked to Brian. When she reached him, she kissed his cheek. He took her hand, and together they walked toward the group. Joe dumped his burger in the sand. He didn’t mean to. But he was too busy watching Brian and Heather.
“Heather and Brian?” Lily whispered to Danielle.
“That’s what it looks like,” Danielle said before grabbing a chip off Lily’s plate and saying, “By the way, I took that pregnancy test this morning.”
Lily looked at Danielle. “And?”
Danielle grinned.
