by T. R. Lester

“I think I’m done with P.A.D. I don’t trust anyone there, we have no director, and I don’t really want to have to get used to working under someone different.” Grace says.

“What? Quit your job?” Gideon asks.

“No. Not quit. Start working on my own. On our own.” Grace says, pointing to all three of them.”

“I think I could handle that.” The wolf tells her with a grin.

  “You’re a hound Gideon.”

  “For you? Always.”

  Draven growled.

“And another thing. You two are going to have to stop the pissing contest that seems to be going on between you. I mean it. No more growling. If I hear one more rumble from either of you, I’ll taser your asses.” Grace tells them.

The males look at each other and nod.

“Fine. I’ll stop growling.” Gideon says.

  Draven nods in agreement.

  Grace rolls her eyes.

“This should be interesting.” She tells them.

  Epilogue

Grace talked the doctor into letting her go home a day early. She was feeling better and had recovered completely. Draven had come to drive her home. He refused to let her drive herself.

As the sun streamed through her bedroom window, she thought back to Emily Kessler. She had to go tell the girl’s mother what happened to her. She had to do that one last thing for Emily.

Throwing the cover back, Grace planted her feet on the floor and stood. Shasta watched her contentedly as she walked to the closet to get some clothes out for the day.

Grace went into the bathroom and run the tub full of hot water. Pinning her hair up, she undressed and stepped over into the tub and eased herself down into the hot water.

She leaned back against the back of the tub and relaxed, trying to gather her thoughts for the hard conversation she had to have with Mrs. Kessler.

Shasta came walking into the room and sat on the bath mat.

  “I hate this part Shasta.”

  Shasta replied with a meow.

The smell of coffee and frying bacon drifted up the stairs and right into Grace’s nose.

“He’d make a good husband Shasta.”

  Shasta looked on, unconcerned.

After soaking for about fifteen minutes, Grace stood, grabbed a towel and got out of the tub. Reaching down to pull the stopper out, she was started to hear the bathroom door creaking open.

  “Grace? You ok?”

  “Get out of here Draven!”

  She heard him laugh.

“Sorry. I just wanted to check on you.”

  “Thanks, but knock next time.”

  Grace smiled to herself.

She heard him go back down the stairs. The vampire was too silent. She couldn’t get used to him being able to be totally soundless when he moved around.

She left out of the bathroom and went to the bed to sit and put her clothes on.

After getting dressed, she unpinned her hair, took it down and combed it.

She heard Draven call up to her telling her to hurry up so she could eat.

“Bossy vampire, isn’t he?” She asks Shasta.

Shasta, like most cats, totally ignored her.

Grace finished dressing, combed her hair, grabbed her jacket and headed down stairs.

When she got to her kitchen, she saw Draven and Gideon sitting at the dining table.

  “Hello beautiful.” Gideon said.

Draven had a growl ready to roll out of his mouth, but squashed it back down for fear of being hit with a taser at seven in the morning.

  Gideon snorted.

  Grace shook her head.

“Sit and eat, then we’ll drive to Tennessee.” Draven told her.

“I really hate this part.” Grace said.

  The males stayed silent.

“Are you going with us?” Grace asked Gideon.

  He nodded.

Grace sat down and eat. The coffee gave her a small boost and she felt a little better.

Draven stood at the sink washing dishes.

“You wash my dishes more than I do.” Grace told him.

  “Not a problem.” He replied.

  “Mr. Vampire homemaker.” Gideon said.

  “Fuck you wolf man.”

“Leave them for later. Let’s go before I change my mind.” Grace tells them.

  “I’m done.” Draven says.

Grace grabs her pack, gun and phone, puts her jacket on and is ready to go. Gideon walks out to Draven’s truck, looking around as he walks.

Draven exits the house and Grace comes out behind him closing the door and turning to put her security code in.

Grace turns back to the yard to see Gideon leaning against the truck and Draven pulling his key fob out to unlock it. For some reason, a strange feeling washes over Grace and she stumbles. As Draven hits the fob to unlock the truck, Grace hears a thundering explosion that shakes the ground under her. Before she’s thrown back into the side of the house, she sees Gideon hurtling toward an old oak tree at lightning speed and Draven sailing over her head and into the old chimney on the top of the house.

Before she loses consciousness, she feels the searing heat of a lava hot fire creeping up her legs.
