The Hunt Page 24

“I am sorry, I can’t do that,” I shot her in her stomach but the bullet didn’t touch her and fell on the ground.

“Jensen, your magic isn’t working,” I whispered.

“Keep shooting, I am trying,” Jensen said. “There are a lot of people here. I can’t use my magic on so many people at once.”

  “Everyone, shoot!” Michael shouted.

We all fired at them continuously. Jensen’s magic worked on some Aivors, they were hit. They bled but were still standing.

“Enough of this,” Andrea’s body locked up with rage. She looked at us and focused her magic at us.

We felt choked, unable to breathe. All of us fell down on the ground holding our neck. Tanner also experienced the same even though he was a beast. She moved her hand in the air and murmured some spell. An invisible magical force pushed me towards her.

She gazed into my eyes while I was struggling to breathe. “What now, Ross? You can’t fight me, I am a lot stronger than you can imagine. You still think I am that weak girl who stays scared all the time?” she chuckled and shook her head. “That isn’t true. You never knew the real me.”

I was struggling to breathe and couldn’t speak.

“I told you I don’t want to hurt you,” she said in a heavy voice. “You can still leave. I will show mercy.”

I tried to stand up. I felt like dying. We all were out of breath. It was like there was no oxygen around us. Some of us even passed out.

“Jensen,” I struggled to speak. “Focus all your magic on Andrea.”

We all began to breathe. Suddenly the choking was gone. Everyone was coughing and vomiting.

“What happened?’ Andrea was shocked, she began to chant some spells and moved her hand, but nothing happened, her magic wasn’t working.

“Trying magic?” I scoffed. “Sorry, that won’t work.”

“What did you do to me?” She looked at her hands.

“It’s over Andrea. Michael, get rid of the flames.”

Michael and some Savors came running with fire extinguishers to extinguish the flames, but before they could reach the bag of burning seeds, Andrea picked it up with her bare hand.

“Stop! Don’t come near me,” she shouted.

“What the hell? How is she holding the burning bag?” Michael said.

“It was a plan B,” Andrea half smiled. “In case if you succeed going against my magic. I applied a potion, it prevents me from burning. If you come near me, I will throw the bag out of the cliff. Two hours are already gone, it’s a very high cliff. You won’t be able to get beneath there in less than an hour. So, stay where you are and don’t try anything.”

“You can still throw it. That was Aivor’s goal, isn’t it? What’s holding you?” I grinned. “Oh! You don’t want to die. You know if you throw it we won’t spare you. So you are using it as your leverage. My guess is your back up party is coming. You just want to stay here until they arrive.”

She half smiled. “Good, you guessed right. They will be here before the seed completely burns out. You can’t do anything Ross, you all lost.”

“I can, you know why? Because you fear death, but I don’t,” I ran towards her, grabbed her and jumped from the cliff. She was terrified and screamed hard. Before I grabbed a branch that was attached to the top of the cliff and we both hung with it. I was grabbing the branch with one hand and Andrea with the other. She was still grabbing the bag and wasn’t letting it go. Michael, dad and everyone ran towards the end of the cliff to save me.

“Give me the bag Andrea or else I will leave your hand. You will die,” I said.

“It will burn you. You can’t hold it,” she said. “You will burn. Take me up.”

“Don’t worry. I don’t care if my hand gets burned. I just need to get the bag back to Michael. He will take out the fire.”

“If I give you the bag you will kill me.”

“I won’t. I will tell Michael to spare you.”

She scoffed. “You are lying, Ross. I am dead,” a tear ran down her cheek. “But at least I will accomplish my goal,” she left my hand.

I grabbed her hand more tightly. “No, I won’t let go of you.”

“You have to, at least this will be a painless death compared to what Michael is going to give me,” she tried to pull her hand away from me.

I was using every ounce of strength, I had to hold her, but she continued pulling her hand. “No, Andrea, please don’t do this,” I yelled. “I can save you.”

Her eyes filled with tears. “It’s too late, Ross.”

“No, I won’t let you die.”

She pulled herself up and bit my hand. I was bleeding and screaming but didn’t let go of her.

“No, Andrea, stop it,” I yelled. “I can save you. You don’t have to die.”

She kept biting my hand so that I leave her. I couldn’t hold more, my hand became weak. It was covered with my own blood. I lost my grip and she fell down with the seeds burning.

  “Nooooooooooo!!!!!” I screamed.

All the hard work was gone. The struggle we went through was for nothing. The seeds were gone. For centuries people fought for it, I became a killer. All the sacrifices were for nothing. Andrea fell with the seeds. She died in order to destroy it. It was just gone, and I couldn’t do anything.

Dad came running towards me and pulled me up.

“We can still make it, let’s go,” Michael said. “We have about fifty minutes before the seeds are completely destroyed.”

“It is destroyed, Michael,” I said. “We can’t make it up there in fifty minutes. It’s a long way to go.”

  “Call your helicopters,” dad said.

“Even if I call my helicopters, still it is going to take more than an hour to arrive,” Michael rubbed his chin. “Let’s hit the road, we will go fast. I can make it. Get in the car.”

“Tanner can jump there from the cliff, he is a hulk. He can make it,” Mom said.

We all looked for Tanner. He was lying unconscious on the cliff.

“Andrea made sure that he doesn’t wake up early I guess,” I said. “He is no use to us right now.”

“You all try to wake up Tanner. If he wakes up tell him to jump down there and protect the seeds,” Michael said. “Ross and I will drive there to save the seeds. It will be a tough ride.”

“I am coming too,” Dad said.

“No time to waste. Some of you have to stay here, whoever wants to go, come, we don’t have time for discussions,” Michael got inside his car.

Dad, Michael and I went together. Michael drove like a crazy lunatic with full speed. He is a good driver I can say that, but it was a scary ride. We made it in fifty minutes.

“Come on! Come on! The seeds may be okay,” Michael ran out of the car to find the seeds.

“Let’s hope for the best,” I followed him with a fire extinguisher.

We ran towards the seeds, it was still burning. I found a dead girl’s hand lying there. It must have been Andrea’s. Michael extinguished the fire with the fire extinguisher and checked the seeds. The seeds turned black and smelled like ashes.

“Oh god! That bitch destroyed it,” Michael cried.

“Damn it!” Dad kicked the car.

I touched the seeds, it was like hard ash. It was destroyed and turned into black. My all hope was gone. I can’t cure my brother. He will stay like that forever. Dave will be paralyzed his entire life, Tanner will remain a beast. All we did was for nothing. My dream to save people was shattered. It stayed a dream.

We were all upset sitting on the ground disappointed. After half an hour, mom, Contessa and Rowena arrived.

“Let’s go, Ross. It’s all over,” mom said.

“I tried so hard but still Aivor succeeded in destroying it,” I said in a low voice.

“We can’t do anything about it, son. It’s over, we can now be together. We will be a family.”

“Family?” my forehead creased. “Aaron is still in that condition, mom. I killed innocent
people for the seeds and now it’s just gone.”

She placed her hand on my shoulder. “We will find a way to cure your brother.”

“There isn’t a way,” I wiped my tears. “I have to beg Bristy to cure him. But I guess she will kill me instead.”

Michael came towards me with the seeds. “I will hand these to my scientists, perhaps they may know a way to bring the seeds back to normal.”

“The seeds were created with magic, Michael,” I shook my head. “Science isn’t going to fix that.”

“I have to try,” his throat clenched. “We don’t have any choice.” he entered his car and talked with his people.

“Come on, let’s go,” Mom said softly rubbing my back.

“Wait! I think Andrea’s body should be burnt,” I said.

“What? No, Leave that, she deserved to die,” dad said. “You don’t need to burn her body.”

I lowered my head. “I want to. Give me your lighter.”

  “You do………….”

I interrupted him. “Please dad, don’t give me a lecture. Just give me the lighter, I don’t want to hear anything.”

He handed me his lighter. I picked up her hand and went to find her dead body. A few meters away, I found it. Her head was crushed into the soil. I took out the lighter and burnt her corpse.

“Goodbye Andrea,” A tear ran down my cheek. “I wish you were the girl I knew, not the girl I saw today.”

There was a small river near her corpse. I saw the scarf she used to wear flowing on the edge of the river. I picked it up, sat on the edge of the river and watched the corpse burning. Just then I saw a blue little stone at the edge of the river.

I went towards it and picked it up. Oh my god! My heart filled with joy. It was one of the seeds. It must have jumped off from the bag when it fell down. The moisture in the edge of the river cooled it down before it was destroyed. I cried in joy.

“Michael, we still have the cure,” I shouted.

Everyone came running towards my voice.

  “Where?” Michael said nervously.

  I handed him the seed.

“Wow! Beautiful,” he smiled and a tear ran down his cheek.

  “I know,” I smiled back.
