‘Yes, that would be nice.’
‘We can sit quietly and have a chat.’
‘Unlike here, it’s so loud.’ George shook her head.
‘We’ll get used to it. I saw you were talking to Brian, what was he saying?’
‘He wanted to know what you thought of him,’ she said quietly.
‘Seriously?’
‘Yes, seriously,’ she said.
‘You surprise me. What else did he say?’
‘He told me his plans for his career.’
‘He’s already intimated that he’s not planning on staying here long.’
‘I’m sure he won’t, but until he goes, I’m sure you’ll get on with him just fine.’
‘I still prefer the old team.’
‘Well, you can’t have the old team so it’s pointless talking about it.’
‘Yes, I know what you’re saying.’ Whitney finished her drink and put her glass on the table. ‘Come on then, are you ready?’
They left the pub and stopped to pick up a pizza. They both drew up at Whitney’s house together, and as George got out of her car, she noticed the lights were on.
‘I’m sure I didn’t leave them on when I left this morning,’ Whitney said, as she walked over to her.
‘Perhaps you did without realising.’
Knowing how slapdash Whitney could be at home, it wouldn’t have surprised her.
They walked up the path and Whitney used her key to open the door. In the hallway stood two suitcases.
‘Tiffany’s here,’ Whitney shouted. ‘That’s her suitcase. Tiffany,’ she called out.
‘In the kitchen,’ the girl shouted back.
Whitney ran into the kitchen with George following. Tiffany was sitting at the table next to a young man with long, curly blond hair which came to his shoulders. She jumped up and hugged her mum.
‘Hello, Mum,’ the young woman said between tears and laughter.
‘You’re home,’ Whitney said as she wiped away her own tears. ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’
‘I wanted it to be a surprise,’ Tiffany said grinning.
‘Hello,’ George said, stepping forward so the young girl could see her.
‘George …’ Tiffany rushed over and gave her a hug.
She froze. Hugs were strange.
‘It’s good to see you.’
‘Mum. George. I want to introduce you to Lachlan. We met in Australia.’
Whitney and George exchanged a glance. Was he her boyfriend?
‘Pleased to meet you, Lachlan,’ George said holding out her hand.
‘Good to meet you, too,’ he replied in a broad Australian accent.
‘I have pizza we can share,’ Whitney said. ‘I’ll open up a bottle of wine to celebrate.’
Tiffany looked at Lachlan, a guarded expression on her face. ‘Before we do anything, I’ve got something to tell you.’
‘You’re not going back to Australia, are you? I thought you were back to stay, I—’
‘Mum. Stop. I’m back to stay. We both are.’
‘Both?’ Whitney frowned.
‘I have a British passport because my mum is from Scotland,’ Lachlan said.
‘But that’s not what I want to tell you,’ Tiffany said.
‘You’re not sick, are you?’ Whitney said, feeling Tiffany’s forehead.
‘No. I’m not sick. It’s—’
‘Tiffany, just tell me,’ Whitney begged.
‘I’m trying but you keep interrupting with your questions,’ she said, tapping her foot impatiently.
‘You know what I’m like. I promise I won’t speak again until I’ve heard your news.’ Whitney stood next to her daughter, her body rigid.
Tiffany glanced at Lachlan, and bit down on her bottom lip.
What on earth was it?
‘I’m pregnant.’
‘What?’ Whitney spluttered.
‘Yes. You’re going to be a granny.’
