Father bought the Flagler News and became a distinguished country editor. There, under him, I learned the printer’s trade, just as I always knew he wanted me to. There I went to high school. And I went to the state university from there, along with the son of a man who had trailed a herd of longhorns up the Chisholm Trail from Texas and a boy whose father had once hunted buffalo. And I came to know that a frontier is never a place; it is a time and a way of life. I came to know that frontiers pass, but they endure in their people.
