Healing Tides

“You’re evil, Carm,” Elsa said with a laugh. “I would eat my weight in that if you’d let me.”
Suddenly, the front doorbell buzzed. Elsa knew beyond anything that this was Bruce — her knight in shining armor. She rushed from her chair and bounded into the house. She was reminded of long ago when Aiden had first come to this very house to pick her up for their first date. Her stomach had tied itself in knots, just as it was now. Through her mad dash from the porch to the front door, she’d marveled — I wonder if this man will be the father of my children? I wonder if this man will change my life forever?
And now, she wondered something similar about Bruce.
Already, he’d changed everything.
She pulled open the front door to find him standing there looking so handsome, with his bright seafoam green eyes locked with hers. In his hands, he held a bouquet of lilies.
“Hello there,” he said finally. They were the simplest words in the world, and yet, they made Elsa’s stomach flip back.
“Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes,” Elsa said.
She took the flowers and felt her own face flourish with wonderment. Emotion was a marvelous and dangerous thing. Pain and pleasure and happiness and life, it was all connected. You couldn’t have any of it without the others.
They held one another’s gaze for a long time. The smell of sizzling burgers stretched out from the porch as Carmella called out.
“Well? Are you two going to get back here, or should I drink both of your margaritas for you?”
Elsa burst into giggles. She then stepped back to allow Bruce to enter. “I think you’re going to really like my family,” she told him as they stepped through the shadows and back toward the light of the porch. “They’re a handful, but they’re mine.”
