Scott's gaze traveled from Will's hand to those deep brown eyes he loved so much. Eyes that told him he was loved in return with merely a glance. Eyes that were now looking at him with confusion and fear, but he was the one who had been afraid—not anymore. Not with Will beside him.
"Yeah," he replied, his voice scratchy and raw as he stared at Will. "I am sick. Sick of lying, sick of being afraid, sick of pretending the person I love most in the world isn't standing right in front of me." He slipped his fingers into Will's and before the other man could register what was happening, Scott pulled him up hard against his body and kissed him, deep and tender. When he pulled back, he stared into Will's astonished eyes.
"I know I've been freaking you out, and I'm sorry," he said softly. "But when I saw Marcus, Todd, and the others at court, the way they held each other without even thinking about it, without looking over their shoulder to make sure no one was watching. I wanted that, too—so badly I could taste it. I wanted to hold you in my arms and let the world know that you're mine. But I was still too afraid of what everyone else would think, and then it suddenly occurred to me. I'm a good cop. A damn good cop, and so are you. We've both worked hard to get to where we are and we've earned it, and the respect of the team.
"If that changes because we're together, then I'm not sure I'd want to be a cop anymore. Because, you know what?" He smiled softly at the bewildered shake of Will's head. "I can do without the force, but I can't do without you." Lifting his hand, he smoothed Will's hair back from his forehead. "I love you, Will Harrison, and I don't give a shit who knows it." He turned to the watching room. "Did you hear that? I am in fucking love with Will Harrison!" Scott gasped as Will pulled him into his arms and kissed him soundly. He wrapped his arms tightly around Will's neck and kissed him back with everything he had, as the catcalls and whistles from their colleagues started. Grace and Julie being louder than everyone else, of course.
"Did you get your picture?" Hall rasped at the photographer. At her amazed nod, he turned to the two men and said, "Can I see you two in my office, please?"
Scott tightened his fingers on Will's, his stomach churning but his gaze unwavering, as they walked across the department to Hall's office. The captain's face had been expressionless, but his gray eyes had glinted hard cold steel as he glared at them. "It'll be okay," Scott hissed at Will, who looked decidedly pale beneath his tan. "I can apply for a transfer, just let me do the talking."
"No," Will replied, his fingers tightening on Scott's. "If anyone is applying for a transfer it's me. You've been here for five years, you shouldn't have to leave. I'll go."
"Today, assholes!"
Scott swallowed hard and gave one last squeeze to Will's hand before they stepped into the captain's office and closed the door behind them. "Cap—"
"Sit!" Hall barked without looking up from the file on his desk.
Scott opened his mouth to respond but Will pulled him down onto the chair beside his and threw him a glare that had his lips snapping shut. His stomach was in knots. Not that he was about to take back a single word he'd said, but he knew the man sitting behind the desk had the power to make or break both their careers. After what felt like an hour of silence, he couldn't take it anymore and cleared his throat to speak.
"I'm the one doing the talking here," Hall said, closing the file and leaning back in his chair, his gaze cool and assessing. "I'm guessing you're both thinking which one applies for the transfer, right?"
"Well—" Scott's mouth snapped shut when Hall held up a single finger.
"Do I look like I'm finished?" Folding his hands across his stomach, Hall's gaze flitted from one to the other. "This is how it's gonna go down. No longing looks across the room at each other. Any domestic shit will be left at the door. While you are in my department, your hands will remain visible at all times. And if, for one minute, your relationship affects the way you do your jobs I'll kick you both out on your little pansy asses. Understood?"
"We can stay?" Scott stammered incredulously. "Both of us?"
"Just don't give me cause to change my mind."
"And it doesn't bother you?" Will said, his voice holding a note of disbelief. "The gay thing?"
Hall huffed out a laugh, "Have you met Damon? Listen guys, I don't care who you fuck as long as it doesn't interfere with the job. Like Scott said out there, you've earned the respect of your colleagues’ time and time again but, if anyone gives you any grief beyond blown up condoms, I wanna know about it. I won't have that kind of shit in my house." A smile briefly lit up the older man's features, "Now fuck off, you've got work to do."
"Thanks, Cap," Will said, standing up and shaking Hall's hand. "We won't let you down."
"So, as long as we don't bring anything into the department, we're cool?" Scott queried, nodding at Hall's affirmation. "As Will said, Cap. Thank you. You won't be sorry." Scott followed Will out of the captain's office and shut the door behind them. Quickly making sure they were out of earshot of their colleagues, he pulled on Will's sleeve and hissed, "Follow me." Ignoring the question in Will's gaze, he strolled across the department and out of the door, heading down the corridor.
"Where are we going?" Will hissed.
"Didn't you say something about sex in the bathroom?" Scott smiled wickedly at him as he pushed open the door to the men's bathroom.
Will pushed him into one of the stalls, the grin on his face widening. "But what about what Hall just said?"
Reaching around Will and jamming the lock home, Scott chuckled, his fingers fumbling with the belt on Will's pants. "He said we weren't allowed to do anything in the department, we're not in the department."
"I can't believe you did that. I'm so proud of you," Will murmured, groaning when Scott's fingers found their mark.
"Will?" Scott murmured, licking at the sensitive skin behind Will's ear.
"Yeah?" Will gasped.
"Stop talking."
"Okay."
EPILOGUE
The clanging of a stick against the bars heralded the arrival of the guard. "Randall," Guard Thompson's voice was gruff. "Back against the wall. Your lawyer's here." The short stocky man waited until Jay got to his feet and moved to the bars of his cell, sliding his hands through the slot in the door. Guard Thompson unlocked the cell and stared Jay down while he cuffed his wrists, daring him to make any sudden moves. Once the cuffs were secure, he indicated that Jay should move back and then unlocked the door, before pulling him forward and pushing Jay along in front of him.
Inside the meeting room where the inmates met with their lawyers, he pushed Jay into one of the chairs at the table, undid one of the bracelets then attached it to the arm of the chair. Taking another set of cuffs from his belt, he slipped one half of the cool metal around Jay's ankle and then the other to the chair leg and snapped it shut. Once he was satisfied that Jay was secure, he got to his feet and went to open the adjoining door. "You can come in now, Mr Kent."
"Thank you, Roy. You can leave us alone," the well-dressed lawyer said briskly. "I have confidential matters to discuss with my client about his case." He smiled up at the guard confidently, charm oozing from every pore. Once the guard had left to stand outside the door within shouting distance, the man sat down at the table opposite Jay.
"Mr Kent?" Jay drawled, shaking his head slowly. "So, you're my new lawyer, huh?"
"I thought I looked every inch the part," the man replied, straightening his tie and smiling confidently. "We don't have long." He dropped his voice an octave and Jay gasped as the other man's socked foot slid up the leg of his orange jumpsuit, caressing the skin of his ankle. "I miss you," the man's voice was soft and low.
"What do you miss?" Jay hissed, biting at his lower lip, his gaze falling to the man's mouth.
"Your hands, your tongue," the man whispered, his voice raw and his eyes darkening. "I miss you inside me, making me scream." He hissed when his foot reached the crotch of Jay's pants and he rubbed his sole against the hard shaft tenting the material. "I m
iss the way you tie me down and punish me when I'm bad, the way you punish me more when I'm good, and I've been real good, baby." He whimpered low in his throat. "I need it, Jay, all the marks are gone, and I need you so bad."
"Stop." Jay groaned; his cock rock hard in his pants at the images the man's words invoked. "Have you gone to him yet? Did you find the keys?"
"Exactly where you said they'd be. I had a little scout around last night and I took these for you." He picked up the briefcase on the floor and snapped it open, handing two photographs to Jay.
Jay's lips parted on a gasp and he reached out to stroke Todd's sleeping face with his fingertips. "When is he going away?"
"Thursday. He's away for three days, tying up loose ends before they move to the new place. Todd's been nervous, but I told him he was perfectly safe, I'd take good care of him while Marcus is away. In fact, I may have offered to stay overnight so he's not alone."
"Good," Jay said softly. "Take real good care of him, Mr Kent. Make him scream—I want him to scream."
"He'll scream. You taught me well. I'll be back next week," the man snapped the briefcase shut and smiled as he slipped his shoe back on. Standing, he looked toward the door and quickly moved around the table to slant his lips over Jay's, tongues colliding, delving deep. "With lots of photographs. Goodbye, Mr Randall."
Jay licked the man's taste from his lips slowly and smiled as the other man knocked on the door to alert the guard they were finished.
"Make sure you tell Todd I said hello."
THE END
About Lisa
My home is in Leigh on Sea, a small seaside town just outside London on the coast of Essex, about ten minutes from Southend, which boasts the longest pier in the world. I live with my husband and two ever-growing children, who I let think are the boss of me; along with a mad-as-a-box-of-frogs fat dog, who is.
I adore horror movies and thrillers with more twists and turns than a helter skelter. I also have a penchant for tattoos and singing at the top of my voice in the car – to the constant embarrassment of my children – and my guilty pleasure is the Antiques Roadshow and the occasional custard cream.
I have written for as long as I can remember and, from the moment I received my first gold star from my Headmaster, Mr. Croucher, way, way back in my youth, I’ve known this is what I wanted to be. Building worlds and giving voice to the many characters vying for attention in my – sometimes a little disturbed – mind is all I want to do.
As Beatrix Potter said, “There is something delicious about writing the first words of a new story. You never quite know where they’ll take you.” I know exactly what she means and hope you’ll join me for the ride.
