Onlyafractionofmyresearchmaterialinvolvesbooksaboutsecretsocietiesor magicspells.Alotofitincludeschasingdowndetailsabouthistoricaleventsand personages,orcomparingthemotifsusedinmyths,folkloreandfairytales.ButI don’tpretendtobean“academic,”perse.Nouniversitywouldfundmywork, becausenoneofitcanbeusedtoadvancethepoliticalmovementsembracedby present‐daycollegeculture,ortopropupthepettheoriesoftenuredprofessors.
Inpursuitoftheesoteric,Ihaveattimesaccidentallyreviveddoctrinesand thesesthathavebeenlong‐abandonedbymodernmainstreamacademia,often withnogoodreasonfortherejection.Myworktendstovalidatetheworldviews ofwritersfrompreviouseraswhoseentireapproachtoscholarship,andthe assumptionsitwasbasedon,havebeenthrownoutbytoday’suniversitiesalong withthebathwater.Ifindthatquiteoftenthesemodernexemplarsoflearning endupjustquotingothermodernauthors,whoofcoursesharetheirownbiases abouthistoricaleventsandpeople,withoutcheckingtheprimarydocuments relatedtothesubjectinquestion.
Thisbecomesanendlessloopofreflection,asifinahallofmirrors,untilthe authorofaresearchpaperendsupessentiallyquotinghimselfbyquotingseven otherwritersheknowswhoareworkingwithinthesamesmallmilieuandwhose ideascanbetraceddirectlybacktohim.Theyaresobusypattingeachotheron thebackthatnobodytakesthetimetotracktheevolutionofthebeliefsystem
thatisbeingconstructedbetweenthem,whichmayonedaybetaughttopublic schoolchildrenlikeacatechism.Iftheyweretodothis,theywouldquiteoften findthemselveshavingtoreevaluatetheworkofclassicalwritersthathasbeen dismissedheretoforebecausetheunderlyingapproachtoresearchusedto constructitisnolongerconsideredpoliticallycorrect.
Strangely,whatseemstobethehallmarkofthisolderapproachtohistory, anthropology,andcomparativemythologyissimplytheassumptionthatonce canfindsignificanceinthesimilaritiesbetweendivergenttraditionsfrom differentcultures.Also,itisapparentlynowcontroversialtosuggestthat symbolismis
alwayssymbolic ofsomekindofprototypewithinherentmeaning.Today’s academicsrevelindeprivingman’sancestraltraditionsofmeaningbecausethey canprojectwhatevertheywantontoit.WhileundergradsmajoringinDiversity Studiesprotest“culturalappropriation”ontheothersideofthecampus,myth andanthropologystudentsarebulliedintoignoringhowthereligiousbeliefsand ritualpracticesofonegrouphaveinfluencedanother.
SoIknewthatmybillswouldneverbepaidbyagovernmentgrantoruniversity donors.Ihavetocompeteinthemarketplacewithalltheothernonfictionwriters forreaderwho,forwhateverreason,areinterestedinthistypeofsubjectmatter.
Ofcourse,thosepeopleareusuallyweirdos.
Inseekingfurtherinformationbeyondbook‐learningIhave,attimesinthepast, actuallysocializedwithsomeoftheseweirdos.Inotherwords,I’vejoinedcults andsecretsocietiesthatI’vebeeninvitedinto,mainlytoseehowtheyworked.I hadalsopracticedseveralformsofdivination,bothinthesegroupsandonmy own.Ifoundthistobeausefulwaytofindcluespertainingtotherestofmy research.
Allofthatbecametoodangerousformeatacertainpoint,however.Soforthe lastfewyears,untilabouttwomonthsago,Ihadsocializedwithalmostnobody.
Iabstainedfrombothceremonialmagicandreadingoracles.Icontentedmyself withutilizingtheknowledgeIhadamassed,thepublishedinformationalready available,andmyownintuition.BynowIhaddevelopedaknackfor understandinghowmysticaltraditionsworked,andcouldoftenanticipatewhatI wouldfindinmyinvestigations.
Thisoperatedasasortofsixthsense.ImayhaveputtheOuijaboardaway,butit wasasifmymindwasadivinationtoolofitsown.Itwasliketherewasaradio receiverinmy
brainthatIcouldneverswitchoff.ButIcouldusuallytuneitto specificwavelengthstopickuponinformationaboutwhateveritwasIwas interestedinlearningaboutatthetime.
Forthemostpart,thishasbeenindependentresearch,andIhavepublishedmy findingsinprint‐on‐demandbooksthatIproducedmyself.Ihavealsodone radiointerviewstopromotethebooksand,whenlucky,paidspeeches,usuallyto smallcrowds.I’vemadealittlenicheformyselfastheworld’sforemostexpert onseveralveryspecifictopicsthatIhavepioneeredonmyown.
Butthelivinghasneverbeeneasy.WhentheMarchharebegantoheraldthe approachofSpring,andeveryoneseemedtoberejoicing,Ialone,itseemed,was downcast.Ifacedaslewofproblemsthatcouldbesolvedonlywithmoney.I couldbarelyevenusemyownphonebecauseofthenon‐stopcallsfrombill collectors.
Inparticular,BarclaysBankcalledatleastthreetimesadaytodiscussthe licensingfeesIowedtotheBritishMuseum.Thiswasinregardstothephotosof the“Metecoffer”(asIcallit)thatIhadprintedinmymostrecentbook, The BaphometPapers.Ithadbeenhailedasamasterpiecebyfellowoccult researchers,butignoredbythegeneralpublicduetoitssizeandtheobscurityof itssubjectmatter.Therefore,thesefeesfromtheMuseumwouldcostmemore thanIhadmadeontheprojectsofar,andIcouldnotaffordtopaythem.

Apparently,itwasoneofthefewliverycompaniesintheCityofLondonthat wasstilldedicatedtoitsoriginaltrade:butchery.Mostoftheothershadevolved intomerefraternalorganizationswithritualsandregalia,meetingfordinnerand raisingmoneyforcharityseveraltimesayear.Thesociety’smottopertained directlytothispracticalmatter:

Overthenextfewdays,asItriedtopreparemylecture,mysenseofforeboding grewstrong.ButtheBaronpromptlypurchasedmyplaneticketsandhotelfor theweekinquestion,atacostinexcessof$7000.Thiswas,inmymind,legal considerationfortheverbalcontract,andassuredmethatthesepeoplewere serious,notjustwastingmytime.ThereviewsfortheRegentPalaceHotelat PiccadillyCircuswereabit meh,butIfeltIhadnorighttobeasnoband demandbetter.
Still,walkingintoaroomfullofBritisharistocratstodeliveramessageabouta SatanicTemplarartifactisveryintimidating,especiallytoagroupofpeople callingthemselves“WorshipfulButchers.”Iwonderediftheywouldacceptmy theory.Theillustrationsonthesidesandlidofthecoffer,Iproposed,indicated thattheKnightsTemplar,thePope’sownspecially‐charteredwarriorsofChrist throughoutthemedievalCrusades,werehavingritualsexwithboys,and sacrificingthem,inanattempttodestroythecreateduniverse.
Thefirstpartofthisclaim—theritualmurderandgaypedophilia—isjustwhat theTemplarshadalreadybeenconvictedofandburntatthestakeforbythe KingofFranceintheearlyfourteenthcentury.Theseriteswereallegedlyallpart oftheirsecretworshipofademonicentitynamed“Baphomet,”whichmy bookwasnamedafter.Thelastpart,aboutdestroyingtheuniverse,wasmyown uniquecontribution.
Twoobviousobjectionstotheveryideaspringupimmediatelywhenyou considerit.First,whywouldanyonewanttodestroytheuniverse?Maybea miserableanddepressedpersonwoulddesirethat,butwhyawholeorganization ofmenfromwealthyfamiliesinvolvedinanincrediblysuccessfulmaterial enterprise,astheTemplarswere?
Secondly,howcouldany“ritual”donebymendestroyeverythingthatexists?
Manypeopletodaythinkit’spossiblethatthebehaviorofmankindasaspecies coulddestroylifeonEarth asweknowit.Butthedestructionoftheuniverseasa wholeseemslikeabitmuch,doesn’tit?
Granted,theTemplarslivedinaworldwheretheuniversewasthoughttobe
muchsmaller,andofadifferentarrangementthanwhatisgenerallyaccepted today.Stillitseemsquiteanambitiousnihilisticanti‐goal.Certainly,itisnot immediatelyobvioushowpederastyandhumansacrificewouldbringthatabout, eveninthemosttwistedoccultlogic.Butthemosttwistedoccultlogicisnot immediatelyobvious,bydefinition,asIwassoonreminded.

MyfirstplanedepartedfromPDXinPortland,Oregonontheafternoonof Tuesday,March27.Itimmediatelyoccurredtome,assoonasIsqueezedmy bodyintotheseat,thatIwasgoingtodieofdeep‐veinthrombosislongbefore reachingmydestinationthenextday.IcouldnotfathomhowIwasgoingtostay inthatunpleasantpositionforthebetterpartoftwelvehourswithjustone layoverinHouston.Asiftopunishmeformyweakthoughts,thesituation escalatedfrombadtoworse.
WhenwegottoHouston,wefoundthattherewasastormoverthearea,andthe planecouldn’tlanduntilitpassed.Wecircledintheairforacoupleofhours waitingforthattohappen.ThenthecaptainannouncedoverthePAsystemthat wewouldbedivertedtoamilitarybaseinAustin.Therewewouldrefueland waitforthingstoclearupinHouston.
AllthistimeIhadwaitedwithoutusingtherestroomonboard,notwantingto forcethepeoplenexttometostandupsoIcouldsqueezepast.Thisprovedto beanawfuldecision.BythetimeIrealizedhowbadlyIneededthetoilet,there weretenpeoplestandinginline,asIcouldseewhenIstoodupfrommy windowseattolook.

ItoldhimwhatkindsofbooksIwrote.Thispromptedhimtotalkabouthis yearsofstudyunderaSufi murshidinWashington,D.C.Thenhebraggedthat hecoulduseprayertosummonUFOs,towhichIsaid,ofcourse:
“YoushouldsummonaflyingsaucertopickusupandtakeustoHouston!”
Ilaughedatmyself.Hedidn’t.
