“I actually came home early because I need to talk to you.”

Her voice had taken on a serious tone, and he pulled her close, his gaze moving about her face. “Babe, what’s going on?”

She sucked in her lips for a few seconds before releasing a ragged breath. “I was at work today and had one of the doctors look at me—”

The bottom fell out of his stomach and he gasped. Grabbing her jaws with his large hands, he cupped her face, holding her close. “Oh, Jesus, Nora. What’s wrong? Whatever it is, we can—”

She shushed him with her fingers over his lips and shook her head. “Nothing’s wrong, Tate. Just unexpected… and well, unplanned.”

He cocked his head to the side, his brow furrowed in confusion. Before he had a chance to ask further, she grinned.

  “I’m pregnant.”

His breath caught in his throat as his jaw dropped. Shaking his head slightly, he said, “But… but… I thought… you…”

She lifted her shoulders in a shrug. “The doctors said I might not be able to get pregnant. It looks like another little Frankie or Francine will be born in about six months.”

He sucked in a quick breath. “You’re already past the first three months?”

Nodding, she rushed to explain, “It wasn’t that I was keeping it from you… well, not exactly. I must’ve gotten pregnant soon after moving here, and with all the changes in my life, I truthfully didn’t notice I’d skipped a period. I’ve only been plagued by a little bit of morning sickness, so by the time I became suspicious that I might be pregnant, I was terrified to tell you. I was even terrified to admit it to myself.”

  “Because of the previous miscarriage?”

“Yes. It’s almost as though I was afraid that I would jinx it. But when several more weeks went by and I still hadn’t started my period, I decided to check with one of the doctors at work.” Her smile widened and shot straight to his heart. “So, technically, I just found out today that we’re going to have a baby.”

With a whoop, he picked her up and whirled her around. With her feet still dangling above the deck, he held her tight and kissed her. His tongue thrust deep inside her mouth, tangling with hers, shooting bolts of electricity straight to his cock.

She wrapped her legs around his waist, pressing her hot core against his jean-clad erection, and laughed. “So, you want to go upstairs and celebrate?”

Stalking into the house, he grinned. “Oh, hell yeah.” Once in the bedroom, he carefully lowered her feet to the floor and slowly peeled her clothes from her body. When she was standing naked in front of him, he dropped to his knees and pressed his lips against her still-flat belly.

Her fingers moved through his hair, and he turned his head slightly, pressing his cheek to her soft skin, closing his eyes, revering the moment.

Later, their bodies sated from lovemaking, they lay naked in bed, their arms encircling each other and legs tangled together. Her head had been resting on his chest, but she shifted and lifted her gaze to his. “I take it you’re happy about the baby?”

Kissing her lightly, he replied, “Having you back in my life again was everything I ever wanted. Having a baby with you is a bonus I didn’t expect, but an honor I’ll always treasure.” She smiled and settled her head on his shoulder so that their gazes stayed pinned on each other.

“I still remember what you said to me in the lighthouse when I asked you to marry me,” he said. “Whatever brought us to right here, right now, today, is simply the path that we needed to take.”

She held his gaze, warming his heart and she agreed. “This, Tate, is our path. Forever.”

  About the Author

I am an avid reader of romance novels, often joking that I cut my teeth on the historical romances. I have been reading and reviewing for years. In 2013, I finally gave into the characters in my head, screaming for their story to be told. From these musings, my first novel, Emma’s Home, The Fairfield Series was born.

I was a high school counselor having worked in education for thirty years. I live in Virginia, having also lived in four states and two foreign countries. I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for thirty-five years. When writing, my dog or one of my four cats can generally be found in the same room if not on my lap.
