The Night Walkers Page 10

by Elaine McGregor-Dawson

Kit sat back down, allowing her words to soak in.

"It happened around the same time each year for so long, by that time Claudius was working for the school as an instructor after he graduated. When the murder's started happening, he started to disappear more and more. Markus became suspicious and twenty years had gone by. More bodies kept going... we lost twenty students, maybe a bit more because we couldn't work out who was doing it, or why. When Markus confronted him about it, Claudius tried to kill him, he knew Markus had alerted more people, so he ran away.

"He had you while he was with the Academy although he lived further down in Manhattan. He didn't like living here. But he was with your Mother, Heather. You see your Mother was an Enchantress, before she came here, she worked with the Night Walker's head Institution as their main mission protector. It was frowned upon to have a child from two different races of our kind, we worried something bad would happen as you got older, we thought your abilities might become too powerful."

"So, let me get this straight," Kit leaned forwards, "my Father is a Night Walker and my Mother's and Enchantress? Then what the hell does that make me?"

Syria stood from her seat as her eyes became serious. "We don't know what you are Kit."

Kit stared blankly at the floor, it was way too over whelming to hear the word's she was hearing. Was it even possible? She felt sick just thinking about how all these truths had been tucked away in some dark corner, waiting for Kit to finally understand them. Could she ever understand all this? Her heart had sunk like a lead weight lay inside it. It was far too much to take it. Yet she stood still, took a breath and kept listening.

Syria nodded. "Your Father met her during an investigation. It's rare that our two kinds cross paths but for some reason they really got along well. She died shortly after she had you, I guess that drove him deeper into madness. He started having rages while he was still working at the Academy, he couldn't contain his anger. Before Markus confronted him, we took you because we knew you had to be protected from him."

"How did my Mother die?" Kit questioned, wanting to know more despite the horrifying truth.

"During a mission, she was poisoned by some underworld creature and killed. Claudius went downhill quickly and for year's Markus and everyone thought he was dead. I mean, how could someone as unstable as him survive out in the real world on his own?" She shrugged her shoulder's. "When the two of you came back after your last mission and told us you'd seen him, we were all extremely worried. What if he'd gotten to you? He could have turned you if he'd known you were his daughter."

The words didn't seem right. How could Kit be someone like that's daughter? He truly was a monster, he told Hedge to that he wanted to turn Kit and Levi into one of his Hybrid's. "If I'm part Enchantress and Night Walker, then why don't I have some sort of ability?"

Syria sighed as guilt crossed her face. "Do you remember how we always take you all to get checked to see if you had any poisoning after you mission's?"

Kit nodded her head, remember how they'd injected her with stuff almost every time.

"Well," Syria continued, "we were injecting you with Night's Bane, it weakened your powers from your Mother's side, so you couldn't accidentally use them."

Kit's head shot up at her word's. "Are you serious? Couldn't I have died? That stuff can be toxic to Night Walker's!"

Syria nodded, "yes, but you aren't just any Night Walker Kit, you are stronger, we feared the power's might become too much."

Kit stood up and immediately felt Levi's arm grip hers. He'd remained silent for most of the time they'd been talking, maybe he was trying to make sense of it all just as she was. It was all too much for her to take in, too much to acknowledge in such a short amount of time. Her entire sixteen years of existence had been hiding away from the truth.

Before she had time to register what was happening, she realized she was already running away deeper into the silent darkness of the still halls.

  CHAPTER SEVEN

  WATCHFUL NIGHT

He wandered down the hall, searching for her, for Kit. He had to tell her about the beast, even though he suspected she already knew about it. Levi slid it hand through his black hair impatiently, sighing deeply into the sunlight.

He walked down the hall, wearing jeans and a black t-shirt until he found her, walking down the same hallway, lost in thought, he fast walked up to her, his eyes wide.

"Kit! I have to tell you about something." He strained his voice to be heard over the commotion that must have been going on in the main hall.

Kit looked up; her brown hair a tangle of curls, her face was pale like she was scared. "Levi! I have to tell you something as well." She looked around; nervously trying to make sure no one was listening. "Keep your voices own; the teachers are in the main hall now, discussing the beast. Syria's with them." Kit watched as Levi's blue eyes widened at the name of Syria.

"Is she hearing because of the beast?" Levi new the moment the words left his mouth that they were true.

Of course, she is. She is a massive authority towards the academy; in fact, she is the head of it. You know Syria Hundred’s family was the founding family and all."

"I know, bad question to ask, anyway, tell me what you were going to say." She looked so scared; Levi couldn't help but notice that she kept on fiddling with the bottom of her white blouse.

"It attacked a girl named Selma, she was fifteen years old, and I came and found the mess in the kitchen almost two minutes after the beast took her." Kit looked so innocent then, almost like a little girl who couldn't escape her problems. Levi had never seen Kit with her guard down, she had barely ever reacted towards sadness or fear, it was always like she blocked it all out.

"Oh!" Levi was so shocked, it wouldn't have taken Kit because she is sixteen not fifteen, but tonight it could easily take her, "Kit, I'm so sorry, I should have been there. I was going to come out, I swear." He bit his lip and looked down.

Kit dug her fingers into her palm until it turned red. "It's not your fault Levi; I wish I never saw what happened in the kitchen. There was blood everywhere, dripping off the plates, off the walls, everywhere" A little whimper escaped her mouth and Levi couldn't help himself, he pulled her into a hug, drawing her to him.

Kit buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing very faintly. What could he do, he had to make sure whatever happened with the beast that it never gets Kit. He could never live with himself otherwise.

"I promise that the beast will never take you." He whispered, she pulled away, a sad, sad expression on her face.

"Don't you understand, I want it to get me?" Her face fell, so did Levi's. He couldn't calculate why she would want to.

"No Kit! I could never let that happen." His voice was stern, not angry, just mortified at her. "Why would you want it to?"

Kit paused a moment, biting her lip. "So, I can kill it." She spat at the word 'Kill.' Levi shook his head at her, he couldn't meet her eyes.

"So, you’re on a suicide mission then! We have absolutely no idea what happens to those girls, I don't know whether they die or not!" He almost yelled at her but didn't mean to. Kit didn't seem to really care, it was as if her guard was back up, because she was back to having that tough expression of hers, the expression Levi fell for.

"I'm not on a suicide mission, I'm on another mission much like the ones we have done our whole life!" Kit let a little anger slip into her voice. Levi could tell she wasn't meaning to be mean, she was meaning to be meaningful.

"There is nothing heroic about doing that Kit, don't you see. No one knows what the beast is capable of; he could kill you with only one bite." He managed to sound a lot less angry, but his voice wavered still.

"I'm not being heroic, I'm not the good one here, I don't do these things freely, and I’m doing this because it's a chance to save people. Why is the beast doing this? It's pretty obvious it's because it's planning a ritual of some sort, pretty soon it could be so powerful that it will be unstoppable." Kit calmed her
words and Levi could tell she had been rehearsing the conversation in her head.

"I happen to have done some research and did you know that a beast like that's bite can be fatal towards us, our whole kind." He was trying desperately to get her to understand, but she wasn't giving in.

"We don't know that for sure though," She sighed and leaned against the wall. "I don't need people to help me; I can choose what I do from now on because you know what? I have had people decide what I do my entire life, just as you have and everyone else in this whole Academy!" She went into a fit of rage.

"I know, it's annoying." He tried to settle her down, but she seemed to throw daggers with her eyes at the wall.

"Please, I need you to understand!" She looked at him; the icy eyes of hers were now gone and replaced with need.

Levi sighed. "I can't let you die, tell me your plan and if I'm convinced I'll let you do what you want."

Kit smiled at him and nodded her head. "My diabolical plan is to pretend to be under the beast’s 'spell' He'll take me to wherever it's hiding the other girls and I'll try to kill it off guard." She shrugged.

"I completely disapprove." She turned around and looked at him. It was now Levi's turn to shrug.

"Please Levi. There is no stopping me, you can't not make me go, and how are you going to prevent me from going then?" She raised her eyebrows.

"Easy, I'll trap you somewhere, I could tell Syria, and I could completely lock you in a room, your choice. I will do anything to make sure you don't get hurt or don't die." Levi stared at her, waiting until she weighed down the options.

Kit just stared at him, mouth open, eyes growing wide with anger. She must have snapped for she lunged at him, pressing him against the wall, her arm across his neck. "Listen here, I won't let you or anyone do this okay." She let him go as she turned and ran down the hall, disappearing out of sight. Levi stared at the empty hallway. He kicked the wall, hurting his foot.

Why was she like this, doesn't she understand the danger she is putting herself in. He sighed and started to sprint in her direction, knowing by how fast a runner she was, that the chances are he wouldn't find her.

Levi had lied about going to Syria or the teachers, that wasn't what he did, he doesn't tell on people. He wanted to make Kit afraid, but that was a very hard thing to do. How was he to get Kit to not go after the beast?

  * * * * * *

Levi later found Kit, searching and pacing around in a tight circle, muttering to her. She was going mad or something, Levi thought. She had every right to. He felt so sorry for Kit; she shouldn't have to go through this.

"Kit." He said. Kit spun around, noticing him for the first time.

"Levi!" She was about to turn around and run, but Levi managed to grab her in time, spinning her around to face him, "Please listen to me Kit, I'm going to let you go, okay."

"You are?" She looked up, meeting his amazing blue eyes.

"Yes." He sighed, pointing his head down. Kit turned it up, forcing him to look her in the eyes.

"Thank you so much, I thought you actually were going to tie me up or something." She said, guiltily. Levi was lost in her eyes.

"Of course not, I couldn't do that." He sighed, opening his mouth to say something, only to close it again. "I'm really sorry Kit."

"That's okay." She looked down, just as Debra walked in, her blond hair artistically curled to the side.

"Sorry, was this a bad time." Kit and Levi broke apart.

"Of course not, what's wrong?" Kit asked, stepping forward. Debra looked so worried, her face looked even paler than usual, she was out of breath and her voice wavered when she spoke.

"We found the cook last night; he had run after Selma; his eyes are black! You know what that means." Debra stood frozen, they all did, their eyes widening in surprise.

"I can't believe that, the darkness took him over." Levi gasped, “We have to see." He said, beginning to walk out of the room.

Kit stood frozen and Levi had to pull her by the arm, "Come on." Debra led them down the darkening hall where the sunlight now barely spread across their faces.

Levi was afraid for everyone, what would happen if Kit's eyes turned black and evil and... Hollow?

  CHAPTER EIGHT

  WATCHFUL NIGHT

  EIGHT

She ran until her breath started to go sky from exhaustion, for the sight before her as she hid behind a pillar with Debra and Levi was most horrifying indeed. The teachers huddled around the boy whom Kit realized as the cook from the kitchen. His eyes were deep black and hollow, like he no longer felt pain of any kind.

Kit tried desperately not to gasp, so she blocked her mouth with her hand and breathed out her nose instead. The teachers all wore looks of horror, their faces pale and even Miss Marla's lip was bleeding because she had bitten it from the whole scene.

"What do we do with him?" Asked Mr Sand, who stood near then back with the others. Syria was the only one who stood a metre away, examining the cook with her purple eyes.

"Um...It's hard to tell, we should not let him out though, and it could never go away." Kit new by Syria's expression that this was no game; it was real, very real.

The cook squirmed, he was chained to a chair as he was knocked out, he tried to scream and thrash against the heavy pull of the chains, but it was too hard and difficult for him. His eyes, Kit couldn't take her own eyes off his black, emotionless eyes. It looked like he wanted to kill anything in his sight.

The teachers were all quiet, letting Syria examine him properly. "How has this happened though?" Asked Headmistress, keeping her eyes locked on the cooks.

"Legend has it that the bite of a certain creature can easily turn our kind evil...By a bite. This could cause him to hallucinate and freak out, pretty soon he won't even remember his old life, and he’ll forget who and what he was." Syria creased her mouth to the side.

All the teachers just blinked and for a moment Kit lost her in the terror of everything. She couldn't stand the sight anymore, so she walked away as quietly as possible. Not looking back to see whether anyone had followed her or not.

"Kit, wait." It was Debra, her soft voice barely coming through the echo in the hall.

"Hey Debra." Kit tried her beast to smile, but it sorts of wobbled, much like Debra's stunned expression did. Levi followed close behind, but he walked backwards, facing the room with the teachers and the now evil cook.

"Guys, that was weird. What's going on?" Levi's face was pale and showed very little fear, he was brave like that, but in this situation, Kit worried that it wasn't too good of a thing. Everyone should have a reason to be afraid of the beast.

Kit shook her head, brown locks of hair hitting her in the face. "I don't know, I don't really want to know." Kit new for sure that something strange was going on, but she was changed, she felt different like that spot of bravery had receded these last few days.

Levi and Debra nodded, shaking their heads in disbelief, "I'm afraid to know anything!" Debra erupted suddenly, her hands were shaking, if she had seen what Kit and Levi had seen the first day they ever saw the beast, she would have freaked and died of fear.

"We all are Debbie." It was so strange, such a devastating thing that was happening, the reality of their world had plummeted suddenly, already people had died, quite a lot of them as well.

Debra nodded, "I think I'm going to go lie down, see you guys later." Debra started to turn around, her voice low and sad and scared.

"Bye Debra." Levi and Kit said in unison, Kit bit her lip and looked away, watching Debra begin to fade in the distance.

"What's the time?" Asked Kit, searching to make sure she was wearing a watch. In this case though, she had left it in her dorm, Levi on the other hand was smart and brought his watch.

"It's almost six O’clock; we better get a move on. You know how it strikes at around about six or seven." Levi looked around, uneasy about being so much in the open of the room.

"Okay, come on, you are letting me do my plan?" Kit grinn
ed; starting to walk a little faster, Levi only smiled and walked after her.

"Wait! What about Debra?" Levi's face suddenly turned into surprise and then a look of scare.

Kit caught on after a while, "Levi, what time exactly?"

Levi bit his lip and checked his watch again. "It's now five fifty-nine!" He gulped and started to run, Kit following close behind him in the direction that Debra went.

It took quite some time though until they were even halfway to where Debra would have been, Kit fidgeted with the bottom of her blouse again, like she did the other night.

"Maybe she got back to her door-" Kit was cut off by a piercing scream that pummelled through her ears, Kit almost shouted out Debra's name, but her hand clamped over her mouth instead. She just stood there, staring down the lonely hall, her eyes growing wider and wider with fear that ripped through her.

"Run!" Levi shouted and took off running towards the sound of the scream, Kit followed him, running as fast as she could manage, she didn't even stop when she started to get out of breath.

They reached the spot where the sound had come from, only minutes before they had got there. Tears began to slip down Kit's cheeks as she stared down at the trail of blood that lead out the broken window and down the street. There was absolutely no time to waste; she dashed after the blood, hearing Levi's feet thudding against the cold road close behind her.

"Kit waits!" It was obviously Levi, who was now running right beside her, he tried to quicken his pace to try to get in front of her, but every time he managed to, Kit would also quicken her pace and soon they were even. "Please Kit." He hardened his tone of voice until; finally, Kit gave up with the running. Levi just watched her frozen, pale expression, not knowing exactly what to say to her.

She collapsed in the middle of the road, sobbing gently into her arm, her face went completely still, and she looked like she was about to burst with anger and go parading down the streets 'Trigger-happy.'

"Kit..." Levi wasn’t exactly sure what to say; Kit looked so down, so devastated and angry with what...The beast, she, Levi?
