  “You’re pregnant,” he stated bluntly.

She giggled. “Why, how observant of you,” she teased, coming up to give him a hug.

“Gwen, this is Karlie, Karlie, Gwen.” He turned back to the pregnant women. “Karlie is Ferro’s granddaughter.”

“Oh my goodness!” she yelped, giving Karlie an extra hard hug. “You made it!”

She then hugged Raphael. “You did it!”

He smiled, putting an arm around the woman he had rescued, and then fallen in love with.

“We did it,” he said proudly. “Is Ferro around?” he added.

Gwen shook her head, taking a step back as she eyed the way the pair stood close together.

“No, he’s not. He ended up leaving on his mission to try and find the Dragon Council,” she said, much of her enthusiasm gone. The Dragon Council had been out of communication for several months now, which was extremely unusual, and very worrying. Everyone thought that Luthor had found a way to dispatch the ruling group of dragons. It wasn’t a pleasant thought.

“Hmm,” Raphael said. “We got back so much faster than I expected. I was hoping to still catch him.”

Gwen just nodded. Then she brightened. “Well, I’m running the place in his absence, so come on, let me get you a drink at least. The others will be here soon, but you need to give me the story first!”

Raphael sighed, but Karlie laughed and tugged him along toward the bar again.

“Just no wine!” they both said at the same time, remembering the last time.

  Karlie

“Karlie!” The door shook under the pounding.

“Who the hell is that?” Raphael asked, stirring in the bed next to her.

“Sounds like it’s Uriel,” she said, though she wasn’t positive. Uriel was one of Raphael’s two closest compatriots, but she’d had so many names to learn the past two weeks that she was still working on memorizing names and voices. It was especially hard when she was still groggy with sleep.

“I’m coming!” she shouted as the door banged again. Tumbling from the bed, she tugged on a sweatshirt and pants to at least make herself presentable.

The locks came undone as the fist pounded on the door once again.

“What the hell Uriel?” she asked, her guess confirmed as the one-armed shifter stood in her doorway.

  “Ferro!” he said.

  “What?”

  “He’s coming home.”

“That’s great,” she said slowly. “Why the pounding on the door at this ungodly hour?”

Uriel had the good graces to look embarrassed.

“Uh, he said he’s not alone.”

One of her eyebrows raised. “Meaning what? Is he bringing the whole Dragon Council here?”

She sure hoped not. From what he’d told her of his other children—her aunts and uncles—they were a rather stuffy bunch for the most part. Having them all here in Genesis Valley would be…awkward.

“Not that I’m aware of. He didn’t say anything about them, which is odd. I asked, but there was no reply. But he did say something of note.”

Karlie sighed when Uriel paused, obviously waiting for her to ask what.

“Uriel, if you don’t tell me what’s going on, I’m going to have Raphael hurt you,” she threatened.

“Hey!” came the cry from inside the room. “Don’t involve me in this!”

Uriel laughed. “Sorry. I just thought you might want to know. He said he’s coming back with a woman.”

  Karlie blinked.

From behind her, Raphael began to shout with what sounded like victory.

“What’s gotten into him?” Uriel asked.

“I have no idea,” she replied slowly, looking back into the room in confusion. “Thank you for the notice Uriel. I appreciate it.”

“Not a problem,” the Stone Bear said, casting one last glance past her at Raphael before departing while shaking his head.

She closed the door. “What’s gotten into you?” she asked, smiling as she got swept up in the little dance he was doing.

“Don’t you see?” he asked, picking her up and spinning her around.

“See what?” she yelped, feet flying out from underneath her.

“If Ferro is coming home with a woman of some sort, he can’t do anything to me! I’m safe! Yahoooo!”

“You aren’t safe from me though,” she told him sternly, trying to keep a serious face.

He eyed her speculatively, then stopped his spin. “I think we can work out a deal,” he said with a wiggle of his eyebrows.

“What did you have in mind?” she asked.

“This,” he told her, laying her down on the bed and swiftly removing her pants.

“Oh,” she gasped as his warm hands spread her legs, his lips kissing up the tender skin. “I think we can make this work.”

Raphael’s mumbled reply was lost in the rising pleasure. Yes, yes she could get very used to life with him.
