Fairies of Light

by J. E Hanson

My dog storms down the steps, but instead of growling at the odd man, my dog walks over to lick him.

The freak show laughs, “Wow! A fairy dog and whose dog does this belong to?”

“Jazzy, leave them alone! Stop licking them! You’re being such a bad dog, Jazzy!” I yell at my dog.

The other guy laughs, “This is a first.”

“I don't know, who the fuck you think you are, but you need to drop your shitty attitude right now. You ask me, and you don't fucking tell me what to do,” I yelled at them.

The odd man with the yellow scarf yawns at me, “I have more important business to discuss with Oberon. Now run along with your fake ass hair, your overindulgence in makeup, and go fetch Oberon for me.”

Ember descends the stairs in her ivory shorts with a navy shirt on. She’s a lot nicer to them than I am, “You guys can come in and have a seat. What kind of drinks would you all like?” I flash her dirty look.

The pincushion with the shitty attitude moves me to the side, “That’s really nice of you, and thanks for the warm welcome. You need to teach your sister some manners.”

The other two guys are laughing. One has short blonde hair with sunglasses on, and the other one has long blonde hair. The angels are amazingly hot. The walking pincushion rubs my dog’s stomach. He makes my stomach churn.

Oberon is working on his car in the garage. But, Ember serves our guests.

I walk in the garage and tap on his shoulder, “There are four guys, who have important business to discuss with you. If you’re in some kind of trouble, you can tell me.”

Snow and Ice observe me. The remaining Enforcers burst through the garage door to meet our new guests. I slowly saunter in behind my uncle, and I’m worried about the trouble he’s in now.

Oberon walks into our living room with the rest of the Enforcers, and he does something I’m not anticipating, “I’m happy to find that you made it! I was wondering if you guys would even show up!”

“I love the dog. What’s his name?” the walking pincushion quickly speaks.

I try to pull my dog away from the pincushion. Oberon smiles at my dog, “That’s Jazzy, and I see that he likes you too.”

“I have a way with animals,” the walking freak show continues to talk.

One of the angels stares over at Ember, and he grins. The angel with the long hair finally speaks, “Not much, man.”

The rude fairy that I can no longer stand smiles warmly, “How’s it going, man?” he asks.

Oberon appears to be excited, “I’m very happy that you’re all here.”

I interrupt them and rudely demand, “I want to know who these guys exactly are?”

My uncle sighs and the obnoxious twit proceeds to speak, “You really need to learn some manners, honey. You obviously never learned that from your grandparents.”

My uncle groans at me, and Ember cuts in, “I’m so sorry that she’s acting like this. You see, we graduated last night and we didn’t fall asleep until early this morning. She’s kind of grumpy, when she hasn’t had all her sleep out,” she explains my current disposition.

The walking pincushion smiles at her, “You’re okay and thanks for the coffee. Your sister on the other hand, is just plain rude.”

My uncle glances at me, and he pleads with his eyes, “These guys are your bodyguards for the summer. They will make sure you two stay out of trouble.”

I exchange glances with all of them and back at Oberon, “Are you actually trusting us with these thugs?”

The other Enforcers gasp, but Oren and Foster Pines are laughing hysterically behind my back.

The walking pincushion adds, “You my dear, is the one who is being exceptionally rude, and now you’re being incredibly judgmental. Stop priding yourself with labels, honey. Are you on the rag—or something? That’s right men! We chose to walk into Bitch-R-Us. There is someone here who needs to dig their tampon out.”

Terrance and Alston Wind are now laughing hysterically too. I give all of them dirty looks.

I grab my cup of coffee, and I’m prepared to dump it over his head, but before I could dump it on him, Oberon grabs it from my hand, “Rosalie that’s enough!”

The jerk raises his shades to my uncle, “This is Rosalie?”

I watch his eyes, and they are the prettiest eyes I have ever seen on a fairy. I’m embarrassed, and then I quickly stare at my feet.

The walking pincushion asks, “Are you telling me that she is Blaze's daughter?”

“Don’t you ever mention my dad!” I yell at him as I clutch my locket tightly.

“Are you sure she’s Rosalie, and not the other chick?” The pincushion has some nerve.

My cousin laughs, “It is so nice to meet you guys, but my name is Ember Tucker. No, she is Rosalie and she’s very moody today,” she introduces herself as she shakes all their hands. She blushes when she shakes hands with the two angels.

Oberon appears to have another headache, because he’s massaging his temples again, “Yes, she is my niece, Rosalie. She’s been through a lot over the years. Rosalie, you will have to learn to trust Spike, Blade, Gabriel, and Gadriel. They are the best in their field. These guys will keep you both safe, much better than the rest of us can. Now we all have businesses that we have to attend. I have babies popping out left and right. So please Rosalie, I implore you to let them do their jobs to protect you two.”

That’s when I find an opening, and I took it, “Who will protect me from them?”

The pincushion has a proper name, and he’s carefully studying me. Now that I know his name, I will never forget it either.

Oberon hugs me, and he’s trying to talk me into this farfetched idea, “I promise that you won’t regret this. Please don’t judge him until you get to know him better. Spike is a very close friend of our family.”

I hug my uncle, and keep an eye on the walking pincushion, “I’m willing to do this, but only for you. I guess I better start moving our things out.”

Spike studies and he eyes me.

“Do you have a fucking staring problem?”

He walks over, and he stands directly in front of me, “You resemble your mother, but you have your father's nose.”

With as close as he is to me, I have to step away from him. “You are a jerk until further notice.”

“That’s what your mother used to call me all the time. You’re not telling me anything new, sweetheart.”

“I am not your baby, sweetheart, or any other mocking terms of endearment. We are not dating, so please refrain from saying that shit to me.”

He has to mock me again, “Whatever you say, toots.”

I want to punch him now. To do anything manually, just sucks majorly. Gadriel and Gabriel escort Ember to her house, because she has to pick up a few more things.

One by one, each suitcase makes it slowly downstairs. The irritating and nauseating pincushion continues to watch me. He sits on the rail without his blue jean jacket. The walking pincushion notices me dragging the first set of suitcases out to the RV. He starts to laugh at me, “Did you forget how to snap?”

I try my best to ignore him, while I place our suitcases in the RV.

Spike walks right behind me, “Do you love manual labor—or something?”

He pushes me far enough to correctly inform his ass, “If you must know, my snap is temporarily on suspension until further notice. That’s why I haven’t snapped a muzzle on you yet. Consider yourself extremely lucky.”

He immediately points at my feet, “I’m extremely lucky that I don’t have to wear those things. Aren’t your feet hurting you by now?”

I mumble a few more choice expletives at the pompous arrogant asshole. I attempt to pick up the next set of suitcases, but he blocks me. He’s really pissing me off, “All you have to do is ask me, and I can help you out.”

I try to move past him, but he is over six feet tall, and full of muscles. I really want to rip out his tongue rings, “Okay then, will you please move out of
my way?”

Spike flicks his tongue at me, and he has two silver studs in it, “That’s a little better, but I want you to ask me for something else. What could that possibly be?” he sarcastically asks, while he taps on his pierced chin.

He’s really frustrating me by this point, “You’re delaying our trip! I have to put these cases in, so that I can grab the other twenty!”

“Where the fuck did you think you were going? How much shit are you taking with you?”

“Why are you being so rude? If you must know, a girl always takes her best shoes everywhere she goes.”

He rolls his eyes at me, and he still blocks me, “I want you to ask me for my help. Why is that too hard of a concept for you to grasp?” I try to push him over, but he laughs at me. He pushes me to the breaking point.

“Babe, you won’t get through me, and you might as well give up. Are you always this headstrong and bullheaded?”

Dain answers from the living room, “You really don’t want an answer to that question.”

“She’s a feisty little thing, isn’t she?” he asks Dain from the front door.

That’s it! I turn and face Snow as I ignore his simple request, “Will you please make him move for me?”

Before I utter the last syllable, Spike snaps his fingers, and he ties Snow’s hands together, “I’m pretty old and I can move a lot faster than the others. Now let’s try this again, sweetheart. I would like you to ask me politely for my help. It’s really not all that hard, baby.”

“I’m not your fucking baby or sweetheart! Will you please move out of my fucking way?”

He shakes his head at me, and he waves his finger in the air, “That’s still not a very nice thing to say, especially when you’re using a word that you clearly have never done yet. Now politely ask me for my help again. I’m pretty sure that the weight is becoming unbearable.”

Since he put it that way, I slam my suitcases down on his feet to make the pincushion grimace, “Fine, will you please help me with my suitcases?”

He stops grimacing, and hopping around on one foot. He grins at me and he casually snaps his fingers to make all the suitcases disappear. He gazes down at me, “Now was that so hard?” He turns around and snaps Snow’s hands free.

“Dude, that was fucking awesome!” Snow compliments the egomaniac.

Spike beams with pride, and you can see the cockiness in him, “I know I’m excellent, and I reek of excellence.”

I attempt to take him down a notch, with a quick mocking whiff of his scent. I notice that he’s wearing expensive cologne, “Oh really? I think you reek of bullshit.”

“That’s not a very nice thing to say to me, Princess. You will need my help fighting against all those rogues. Those rogues will suck you dry from standing there. You better be happy that I’m willing to devote my precious time and energy to your little ridiculous vacation.”

He needs a sarcastic bow, “Let all of us bow to the king of bullshit now! I’m so glad that you’re willing to save a little ole tiny girl like me from the big bad rogues!”

The Enforcers are still howling with laughter at our conversation and constant bickering. Dain and Elvin have to leave the room. The Enforcers are making me even angrier.

He shakes his head at me, “Come to think of it, I believe you’re so much worse than your mom ever was to me.”

With a quick flick of my middle finger, he receives the bird. My photo albums are coming with me next. He follows me, and he scares me. He startles me by slamming a book down on my dresser.

“Do you have anything else that you want to take with you?”

“I think I have everything, and I’m also taking my dog with me.”

He squats down and pets my dog, “You’re a lot nicer to me than your owner is. You poor guy, and you have to deal with her.”

He’s so frustrating! I huff and roll my eyes at him. I try to call Jazzy, but he stays right by Spike, “Come Jazzy! Come on! Let’s go! Come on, Jazzy!”

“I bet he will listen to me instead. Are you ready to go, Jazzy?”

My dog chases his tail, and he barks happily at Spike. Now my dog is listening to the walking pincushion over me. I glare at him and walk to the RV.

Oberon greets me at the RV, “You really should be a whole lot nicer to him than what you are being to him right now. You’re acting incredibly bitchy towards him. Please give him a chance, Rosalie.”

“I will try, but he’s acting like an obnoxious asshole. You mean to tell me that you couldn’t find better bodyguards?”

Oberon rubs his temples again, “Try to act like an adult, Rosalie. Trust me when I say this; you will want him for your bodyguard. He’s highly regarded.”

My uncle walks away, and shakes his head at me. Ember returns with the two angels. All three of them are getting along well with each other. She has all of her suitcases with her.

“My half is here and we are about to have so much fun!”

I keep the picture that Violet gives me, and walk inside the RV. Gabriel wants to drive first and Gadriel will be his co-pilot. I groan at the rude jerk who sits at our table with his brother as if he owns the place. My dog’s head rests in his lap too.

He pats at a seat next to him, “You can sit over here, toots. I promise not to bite. Your dog does love me though.”

She laughs and points, “Dogs have a great sense of character. Jazzy must really love him, because he has never acted like that with strangers.”

I shake my head, and stare at my dog, “He probably isn’t feeling well today.”

She sits right beside Blade, and she talks nicely to him.

Spike lays his shades on the table, and he keeps his shades off, “Look, I promise to be a fucking Boy Scout, toots. Now you can sit next to me, and I promise to act like a real gentleman.”

I roll my eyes at the pig, and sit next to him. The pictures come out of hiding, so I can work on building the scrapbooks. There is an unusual feeling of someone peeking over my shoulder.

“What are all these pictures of?”

I try to ignore him, but he notices the pictures of Snow and me at the senior prom.

“Are you and Snow an item or something?”

“Are you trying to fish, Spike?” Gabe teases him from the driver’s seat.

“Hell no dude and I just want to know why Snow is on her arm, that’s all, bud.”

The only way not to speak to the walking pincushion is by shaking my head no.

  “Are you a lesbian?”

Gabe laughs in the rearview mirror, “Dude that is so not right!”

I want to slap him, but instead I huff at him, “If you must know, I’m seeing someone else, who happens to be a guy.”

Gadriel turns around for a second, “Where is he? He’s not here with you. If he cares so much about you, he would not allow you to be on an RV with four strange men.”

“Yikes Gadriel, I’m thinking the same exact thing! That just means, great minds think alike. So, who is the lucky fella anyway?”

My eyes deliberately roll at him, but Ember answers for me, “Some guy, by the name of Jesse. I wouldn’t worry about him though, because he has never called her in a few years anyway. I can safely say that he ultimately moved on.”

“How dare you say that Ember, and I thought you were my friend!”

Spike starts to laugh, “Oh, that’s harsh! Your best friend disses you! So, what’s his last name anyway?”

“His name is Jesse Hurst, and I don’t believe you guys would know who he is anyway,” she answers inappropriately for me again.

He closes his eyes, “How is his mom doing?”

I inform him since he’s a fairy, “She died while giving birth to Jesse.”

“Do you mind moving for a minute? I need to check on something.”

He takes my picture, and he walks back to the spare bedroom.

  “Was it something I said?”

Blade sighs and he glances over his newspaper, “Spike and Jesse’s mom were an i
tem a very long time ago.”

“Did she break a lot of other hearts too? What the fuck is so great about Jesse's mom?”

“She slept with a lot of guys. That whore was loose, and a lot of guys had a piece of her.”

Out of respect, I quickly check the back bedroom. I notice that he’s covering his face with his hands. His shoulders tremble right in front of me. I struggle to believe that he’s actually crying.

The nice bitch inside of me decides to come out for once, “If it makes you feel any better, I’m supposed to be with Jesse, but it doesn’t feel like he wants me either. I have no idea what your involvement with Jesse's mom is, but for what it is worth, there are tons of other fairies in the sea. Don’t let one bitch ruin you, like she has done to others.”

He stops crying, and he flashes a quick smile with amusement in his eyes. He has very familiar eyes, and I believe that I’ve seen them before.

The confusion continues, “Have we met before?”

He shakes his head no, “You remind me of your mom. I don’t believe that you’re the reincarnated version of her though. Thanks for the advice. I guess it’s about time that I finally put the past behind me, and move on.”

I grab his hand, and pull him to join me in the dining area. The guys move the table out of the way for a large sectional. Ember is presently fast asleep. Blade is not such a bad guy after all. He’s nice enough to cover her up with a blanket. Out of sheer habit, I sit on the floor, and take my heels off. I miss being barefoot. After a few glances to make sure she’s asleep, I quickly take out all my fairy pictures. This is from the time, that I was five years old, and to the time, that I left Avalon. There are pictures of my dog and me. Jazzy lays his head in my lap. Spike plops right beside me.

  “What are all these pictures?”

“This is our home, and I miss it terribly.”

I take out the pictures, and he notices my aunt, “How is your Aunt Skylar doing?”

I flash him a picture of Skylar and Puck, “They are dating each other, and they are so good together. I hope he marries her one of these days.”

He takes his leather boots off, and he nudges me, “I also miss being barefoot too. I want to say this without offending you, but your aunt has lost a lot of weight.”
