In the midst of the time-changing moment, the light surrounding Lorelei burnt brightly. She lifted her face towards him, pressing her lips onto his, the intensity of their first kiss was incomparable to the force flowing between them at that moment. Their minds opened, the potency of their individual powers melded until Lorelei's mind could hold no more.

The light inside Gabe's mind grew as it united with hers. As they kissed, a stream of images passed between them, pictures of themselves together, the intensity of their emotions flowing between them as readily as the energy they created through their embrace. The barrier between them fell as their spirits melded, breaking their wall between each other’s worlds.

The sound of the door opening and closing echoed through the hallway and the pair broke their kiss in alarm.

A man as tall as Gabe walked into the room and regarded them through displeased eyes. Water glistened in his short dark hair and across a face sculpted into an unnatural beauty.

“Hello, idiots,” he said and shook water from his shirt sleeve. “Who opened the bloody Gateway?”

“Lucas?” asked Gabe. He moved from Lorelei and stood.

Caleb pushed a hand through his damp hair. “I didn’t know you were down here.”

“I wasn’t, until ten minutes ago.” His eyes narrowed at Caleb. “I bet you never expected to see me again, did you?”

  Mutely, Caleb shook his head.

“Please don’t tell me the invasion is happening,” said Gabe.

Lucas gestured at the sky where only a few stars still fell. “There’s an army, just as Lucifer wanted. This world is no longer safe, thanks to you.”

“My task was impossible,” protested Gabe.

“Don’t you think they always knew that, Gabe? Whoever betrayed the angel council deliberately chose someone who’d succumb to their love for humans eventually. They used that time to amass more power.”

“No. I was committed because I needed to fulfil my punishment and go back. I didn’t want to be here.”

“But you do now, don’t you?” Lucas gestured at Lorelei. “Your desire for her and a human life has brought you to this moment.”

“Can you help?” Gabe asked. “Do you know what they’re planning.”

Lucas tipped his chin. “Oh, yeah. I’ve been trapped in that prison for years and I know exactly what they’re planning. This world is no longer safe. Lucifer wants the world to be his.”

Caleb tensed and backed away. “Have you come to start the task by killing us?”

Lucas blinked. “Me? No. Remember I was like you? That we originally wanted to help? I don’t want a world ruled by anarchy and death.” He gestured at Gabe. “You may’ve had a reprieve, but I was slung in that hole of a prison for years.”

Caleb swore again from where he stood by the window. “He’s here.”

Alarmed at who could walk through the door, Gabe stepped forward. But there was nobody. What he saw was worse. With the oncoming dawn, a huge star shone in a sky no longer filled with the falling army. He knew the human word for what they thought was a planet and feared for them every time he saw the bright star close.

  The morning star. Lucifer.

Gabe took Lorelei’s hand in his and looked to Lucas and Caleb. The temptation to leave Caleb to his fate grew, but he wasn’t the enemy anymore. The vain, ambitious man had created his own downfall. And they were equal again.

“We need to leave. All of us,” urged Lucas.

Gabe knew he had no more choices.

The four walked from the building into a world where the stars would never shine above again. A new world about to be attacked by those the humans trusted thanks to stories about celestial beings who loved them. The supernatural races hidden in their society weren’t the ones to be feared—the vampires, the witches, the shifters. They were now the ones who needed to work together more than they ever did before.

These new angels would blend into the world and place themselves in people’s lives, as if they’d always been there. They were the world’s real enemy. They were Lucifer’s angels and they had arrived to conquer.

The story continues in book two which will be published later in the year.
