She hardly slept at all that night, and by the morning, she had made up her mind. She had a quick shower, pulled on jogging bottoms and a checked shirt, and stepped out into the dawn. Willowbeck was sleepy and still, the water glassy, a robin singing into the quiet. Summer began the process of casting off; turning on the engine, tying on the central rope before releasing the others. She glanced at The Sandpiper, willing the engine sound to wake Mason, or Archie, unsure why she hadn’t allowed herself to go and tell him she was leaving.
As she steered out into the middle of the river, the bow of the boat brushing against the willow trees, she felt the thrill of the unknown. Could she really start again somewhere else? Could she take The Canal Boat Café and make a success out of it, and a life for herself, away from Willowbeck? If someone here thought she was a joke, then she was prepared to prove them wrong. It was her boat now, and she was going to embrace the opportunities that it offered her. With a final glance at the gold and red of Mason’s boat, safe and snug in its mooring, Summer engaged the throttle and powered The Canal Boat Café up the river, the cold, deep water shimmering in its wake.
If you enjoyed ALL ABOARD, you’ll be happy to hear that there are plenty more Canal Boat Café adventures!
