[21] καὶ δώσω χάριν τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ ἐναντίον τῶν Αἰγυπτίων· ὅταν δὲ ἀποτρέχητε, οὐκ ἀπελεύσεσθε κενοί·
[21] And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, and whenever ye shall escape, ye shall not depart empty.
[22] αἰτήσει γυνὴ παρὰ γείτονος καὶ συσκήνου αὐτῆς σκεύη ἀργυρᾶ καὶ χρυσᾶ καὶ ἱματισμόν, καὶ ἐπιθήσετε ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς θυγατέρας ὑμῶν καὶ σκυλεύσετε τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους. –
[22] But every woman shall ask of her neighbour and fellow lodger, articles of gold and silver, and apparel; and ye shall put them upon your sons and upon your daughters, — and spoil ye the Egyptians.
CHAPTER 4
[1] ἀπεκρίθη δὲ Μωϋσῆς καὶ εἶπεν Ἐὰν οὖν μὴ πιστεύσωσίν μοι μηδὲ εἰσακούσωσιν τῆς φωνῆς μου, ἐροῦσιν γὰρ ὅτι Οὐκ ὦπταί σοι ὁ θεός, τί ἐρῶ πρὸς αὐτούς;
[1] And Moses answered and said, If they believe me not, and do not hearken to my voice (for they will say, God has not appeared to thee), what shall I say to them?
[2] εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ κύριος Τί τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ῥάβδος.
[2] And the Lord said to him, What is this thing that is in thine hand? and he said, A rod.
[3] καὶ εἶπεν Ῥῖψον αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν. καὶ ἔρριψεν αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ ἐγένετο ὄφις· καὶ ἔφυγεν Μωϋσῆς ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ.
[3] And he said, Cast it on the ground: and he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses fled from it.
[4] καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν Ἔκτεινον τὴν χεῖρα καὶ ἐπιλαβοῦ τῆς κέρκου· ἐκτείνας οὖν τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο τῆς κέρκου, καὶ ἐγένετο ῥάβδος ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ·
[4] And the Lord said to Moses, Stretch forth thine hand, and take hold of its tail: so he stretched forth his hand and took hold of the tail,
[5] ἵνα πιστεύσωσίν σοι ὅτι ὦπταί σοι κύριος ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν, θεὸς Αβρααμ καὶ θεὸς Ισαακ καὶ θεὸς Ιακωβ.
[5] and it became a rod in his hand, — that they may believe thee, that the God of thy fathers has appeared to thee, the God of Abraam, and God of Isaac, and God of Jacob.
[6] εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ κύριος πάλιν Εἰσένεγκε τὴν χεῖρά σου εἰς τὸν κόλπον σου. καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν κόλπον αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐξήνεγκεν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ κόλπου αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐγενήθη ἡ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ χιών.
[6] And the Lord said again to him, Put thine hand into thy bosom; and he put his hand into his bosom, and brought his hand out of his bosom, and his hand became as snow.
[7] καὶ εἶπεν Πάλιν εἰσένεγκε τὴν χεῖρά σου εἰς τὸν κόλπον σου. καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν τὴν χεῖρα εἰς τὸν κόλπον αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐξήνεγκεν αὐτὴν ἐκ τοῦ κόλπου αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάλιν ἀπεκατέστη εἰς τὴν χρόαν τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ.
[7] And he said again, Put thy hand into thy bosom; and he put his hand into his bosom, and brought his hand out of his bosom, and it was again restored to the complexion of his other flesh.
[8] ἐὰν δὲ μὴ πιστεύσωσίν σοι μηδὲ εἰσακούσωσιν τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ σημείου τοῦ πρώτου, πιστεύσουσίν σοι τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ σημείου τοῦ ἐσχάτου.
[8] And if they will not believe thee, nor hearken to the voice of the first sign, they will believe thee because of the voice of the second sign.
[9] καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν μὴ πιστεύσωσίν σοι τοῖς δυσὶ σημείοις τούτοις μηδὲ εἰσακούσωσιν τῆς φωνῆς σου, λήμψῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος τοῦ ποταμοῦ καὶ ἐκχεεῖς ἐπὶ τὸ ξηρόν, καὶ ἔσται τὸ ὕδωρ, ὃ ἐὰν λάβῃς ἀπὸ τοῦ ποταμοῦ, αἷμα ἐπὶ τοῦ ξηροῦ. –
[9] And it shall come to pass if they will not believe thee for these two signs, and will not hearken to thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river and pour it upon the dry land, and the water which thou shalt take from the river shall be blood upon the dry land.
[10] εἶπεν δὲ Μωϋσῆς πρὸς κύριον Δέομαι, κύριε, οὐχ ἱκανός εἰμι πρὸ τῆς ἐχθὲς οὐδὲ πρὸ τῆς τρίτης ἡμέρας οὐδὲ ἀφ’ οὗ ἤρξω λαλεῖν τῷ θεράποντί σου· ἰσχνόφωνος καὶ βραδύγλωσσος ἐγώ εἰμι.
[10] And Moses said to the Lord, I pray, Lord, I have not been sufficient in former times, neither from the time that thou hast begun to speak to thy servant: I am weak in speech, and slow-tongued.
[11] εἶπεν δὲ κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν Τίς ἔδωκεν στόμα ἀνθρώπῳ, καὶ τίς ἐποίησεν δύσκωφον καὶ κωφόν, βλέποντα καὶ τυφλόν; οὐκ ἐγὼ ὁ θεός;
[11] And the Lord said to Moses, Who has given a mouth to man, and who has made the very hard of hearing, and the deaf, the seeing and the blind? have not I, God?
[12] καὶ νῦν πορεύου, καὶ ἐγὼ ἀνοίξω τὸ στόμα σου καὶ συμβιβάσω σε ὃ μέλλεις λαλῆσαι.
[12] And now go and I will open thy mouth, and will instruct thee in what thou shalt say.
[13] καὶ εἶπεν Μωϋσῆς Δέομαι, κύριε, προχείρισαι δυνάμενον ἄλλον, ὃν ἀποστελεῖς.
[13] And Moses said, I pray thee, Lord, appoint another able person whom thou shalt send.
[14] καὶ θυμωθεὶς ὀργῇ κύριος ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν εἶπεν Οὐκ ἰδοὺ Ααρων ὁ ἀδελφός σου ὁ Λευίτης; ἐπίσταμαι ὅτι λαλῶν λαλήσει αὐτός σοι· καὶ ἰδοὺ αὐτὸς ἐξελεύσεται εἰς συνάντησίν σοι καὶ ἰδών σε χαρήσεται ἐν ἑαυτῷ.
[14] And the Lord was greatly angered against Moses, and said, Lo! is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he will surely speak to thee; and, behold, he will come forth to meet thee, and beholding thee he will rejoice within himself.
[15] καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ δώσεις τὰ ῥήματά μου εἰς τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐγὼ ἀνοίξω τὸ στόμα σου καὶ τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ καὶ συμβιβάσω ὑμᾶς ἃ ποιήσετε.
[15] And thou shalt speak to him; and thou shalt put my words into his mouth, and I will open thy mouth and his mouth, and I will instruct you in what ye shall do.
[16] καὶ αὐτός σοι προσλαλήσει πρὸς τὸν λαόν, καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται σου στόμα, σὺ δὲ αὐτῷ ἔσῃ τὰ πρὸς τὸν θεόν.
[16] And he shall speak for thee to the people, and he shall be thy mouth, and thou shalt be for him in things pertaining to God.
[17] καὶ τὴν ῥάβδον ταύτην τὴν στραφεῖσαν εἰς ὄφιν λήμψῃ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου, ἐν ᾗ ποιήσεις ἐν αὐτῇ τὰ σημεῖα.
[17] And this rod that was turned into a serpent thou shalt take in
thine hand, wherewith thou shalt work miracles.
[18] Ἐπορεύθη δὲ Μωϋσῆς καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν πρὸς Ιοθορ τὸν γαμβρὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει Πορεύσομαι καὶ ἀποστρέψω πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφούς μου τοὺς ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ ὄψομαι εἰ ἔτι ζῶσιν. καὶ εἶπεν Ιοθορ Μωυσῇ Βάδιζε ὑγιαίνων.
[18] And Moses went and returned to Jothor his father-in-law, and says, I will go and return to my brethren in Egypt, and will see if they are yet living. And Jothor said to Moses, Go in health. And in those days after some time, the king of Egypt died.
[19] μετὰ δὲ τὰς ἡμέρας τὰς πολλὰς ἐκείνας ἐτελεύτησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου. εἶπεν δὲ κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἐν Μαδιαμ Βάδιζε ἄπελθε εἰς Αἴγυπτον· τεθνήκασιν γὰρ πάντες οἱ ζητοῦντές σου τὴν ψυχήν.
[19] And the Lord said to Moses in Madiam, Go, depart into Egypt, for all that sought thy life are dead.
[20] ἀναλαβὼν δὲ Μωϋσῆς τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ τὰ παιδία ἀνεβίβασεν αὐτὰ ἐπὶ τὰ ὑποζύγια καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν εἰς Αἴγυπτον· ἔλαβεν δὲ Μωϋσῆς τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ.
[20] And Moses took his wife and his children, and mounted them on the beasts, and returned to Egypt; and Moses took the rod which he had from God in his hand.
[21] εἶπεν δὲ κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν Πορευομένου σου καὶ ἀποστρέφοντος εἰς Αἴγυπτον ὅρα πάντα τὰ τέρατα, ἃ ἔδωκα ἐν ταῖς χερσίν σου, ποιήσεις αὐτὰ ἐναντίον Φαραω· ἐγὼ δὲ σκληρυνῶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐξαποστείλῃ τὸν λαόν.
[21] And the Lord said to Moses, When thou goest and returnest to Egypt, see — all the miracles I have charged thee with, thou shalt work before Pharao: and I will harden his heart, and he shall certainly not send away the people.
[22] σὺ δὲ ἐρεῖς τῷ Φαραω Τάδε λέγει κύριος Υἱὸς πρωτότοκός μου Ισραηλ·
[22] And thou shalt say to Pharao, These things saith the Lord, Israel is my first-born.
[23] εἶπα δέ σοι Ἐξαπόστειλον τὸν λαόν μου, ἵνα μοι λατρεύσῃ· εἰ μὲν οὖν μὴ βούλει ἐξαποστεῖλαι αὐτούς, ὅρα οὖν ἐγὼ ἀποκτενῶ τὸν υἱόν σου τὸν πρωτότοκον.
[23] And I said to thee, Send away my people, that they may serve me: now if thou wilt not send them away, see, I will slay thy fir-born son.
[24] Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐν τῷ καταλύματι συνήντησεν αὐτῷ ἄγγελος κυρίου καὶ ἐζήτει αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι.
[24] And it came to pass that the angel of the Lord met him by the way in the inn, and sought to slay him.
[25] καὶ λαβοῦσα Σεπφωρα ψῆφον περιέτεμεν τὴν ἀκροβυστίαν τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτῆς καὶ προσέπεσεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας καὶ εἶπεν Ἔστη τὸ αἷμα τῆς περιτομῆς τοῦ παιδίου μου.
[25] and Sepphora having taken a stone cut off the foreskin of her son, and fell at his feet and said, The blood of the circumcision of my son is staunched:
[26] καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ, διότι εἶπεν Ἔστη τὸ αἷμα τῆς περιτομῆς τοῦ παιδίου μου.
[26] and he departed from him, because she said, The blood of the circumcision of my son is staunched.
[27] Εἶπεν δὲ κύριος πρὸς Ααρων Πορεύθητι εἰς συνάντησιν Μωυσεῖ εἰς τὴν ἔρημον· καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ συνήντησεν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ ὄρει τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ κατεφίλησαν ἀλλήλους.
[27] And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses; and he went and met him in the mount of God, and they kissed each other.
[28] καὶ ἀνήγγειλεν Μωϋσῆς τῷ Ααρων πάντας τοὺς λόγους κυρίου, οὓς ἀπέστειλεν, καὶ πάντα τὰ σημεῖα, ἃ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ.
[28] And Moses reported to Aaron all the words of the Lord, which he sent, and all the things which he charged him.
[29] ἐπορεύθη δὲ Μωϋσῆς καὶ Ααρων καὶ συνήγαγον τὴν γερουσίαν τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ.
[29] And Moses and Aaron went and gathered the elders of the children of Israel.
[30] καὶ ἐλάλησεν Ααρων πάντα τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα, ἃ ἐλάλησεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Μωυσῆν, καὶ ἐποίησεν τὰ σημεῖα ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ.
[30] And Aaron spoke all these words, which God spoke to Moses, and wrought the miracles before the people.
[31] καὶ ἐπίστευσεν ὁ λαὸς καὶ ἐχάρη, ὅτι ἐπεσκέψατο ὁ θεὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ, καὶ ὅτι εἶδεν αὐτῶν τὴν θλῖψιν· κύψας δὲ ὁ λαὸς προσεκύνησεν.
[31] and the people believed and rejoiced, because God visited the children of Israel, and because he saw their affliction: and the people bowed and worshipped.
CHAPTER 5
[1] Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰσῆλθεν Μωϋσῆς καὶ Ααρων πρὸς Φαραω καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ Ἐξαπόστειλον τὸν λαόν μου, ἵνα μοι ἑορτάσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ.
[1] And after this went in Moses and Aaron to Pharao, and they said to him, These things says the Lord God of Israel, Send my people away, that they may keep a feast to me in the wilderness.
[2] καὶ εἶπεν Φαραω Τίς ἐστιν οὗ εἰσακούσομαι τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ὥστε ἐξαποστεῖλαι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ; οὐκ οἶδα τὸν κύριον καὶ τὸν Ισραηλ οὐκ ἐξαποστέλλω.
[2] And Pharao said, Who is he that I should hearken to his voice, so that I should send away the children of Israel? I do not know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.
[3] καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Ὁ θεὸς τῶν Εβραίων προσκέκληται ἡμᾶς· πορευσόμεθα οὖν ὁδὸν τριῶν ἡμερῶν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον, ὅπως θύσωμεν τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν, μήποτε συναντήσῃ ἡμῖν θάνατος ἢ φόνος.
[3] And they say to him, The God of the Hebrews has called us to him: we will go therefore a three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest at any time death or slaughter happen to us.
[4] καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου Ἵνα τί, Μωυσῆ καὶ Ααρων, διαστρέφετε τὸν λαόν μου ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων; ἀπέλθατε ἕκαστος ὑμῶν πρὸς τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ.
[4] And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, turn the people from their works? depart each of you to your works.
[5] καὶ εἶπεν Φαραω Ἰδοὺ νῦν πολυπληθεῖ ὁ λαός· μὴ οὖν καταπαύσωμεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων.
[5] And Pharao said, Behold now, the people is very numerous; let us not then give them rest from their work.
[6] συνέταξεν δὲ Φαραω τοῖς ἐργοδιώκταις τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τοῖς γραμματεῦσιν
λέγων
[6] And Pharao gave orders to the task-masters of the people and the accountants, saying,
[7] Οὐκέτι προστεθήσεται διδόναι ἄχυρον τῷ λαῷ εἰς τὴν πλινθουργίαν καθάπερ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ἡμέραν· αὐτοὶ πορευέσθωσαν καὶ συναγαγέτωσαν ἑαυτοῖς ἄχυρα.
[7] Ye shall no longer give straw to the people for brick-making as yesterday and the third day; but let them go themselves, and collect straw for themselves.
[8] καὶ τὴν σύνταξιν τῆς πλινθείας, ἧς αὐτοὶ ποιοῦσιν καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, ἐπιβαλεῖς αὐτοῖς, οὐκ ἀφελεῖς οὐδέν· σχολάζουσιν γάρ· διὰ τοῦτο κεκράγασιν λέγοντες Πορευθῶμεν καὶ θύσωμεν τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν.
[8] And thou shalt impose on them daily the rate of brick-making which they perform: thou shalt not abate anything, for they are idle; therefore have they cried, saying, Let us arise and do sacrifice to our God.
[9] βαρυνέσθω τὰ ἔργα τῶν ἀνθρώπων τούτων, καὶ μεριμνάτωσαν ταῦτα καὶ μὴ μεριμνάτωσαν ἐν λόγοις κενοῖς.
[9] Let the works of these men be made grievous, and let them care for these things, and not care for vain words.
[10] κατέσπευδον δὲ αὐτοὺς οἱ ἐργοδιῶκται καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς τὸν λαὸν λέγοντες Τάδε λέγει Φαραω Οὐκέτι δίδωμι ὑμῖν ἄχυρα·
[10] And the taskmasters and the accountants hastened them, and they spoke to the people, saying, thus says Pharao, I will give you straw no longer.
[11] αὐτοὶ ὑμεῖς πορευόμενοι συλλέγετε ἑαυτοῖς ἄχυρα ὅθεν ἐὰν εὕρητε, οὐ γὰρ ἀφαιρεῖται ἀπὸ τῆς συντάξεως ὑμῶν οὐθέν.
