[19] αὗται αἱ ὁδοί εἰσι πάντων τῶν συντελούντων τὰ ἄνομα· τῇ γὰρ ἀσεβείᾳ τὴν ἑαυτῶν ψυχὴν ἀφαιροῦνται.
[19] These are the ways of all that perform lawless deeds; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life.
[20] Σοφία ἐν ἐξόδοις ὑμνεῖται, ἐν δὲ πλατείαις παρρησίαν ἄγει·
[20] Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly.
[21] ἐπ᾿ ἄκρων τειχέων κηρύσσεται, ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις δυναστῶν παρεδρεύει, ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις πόλεως θαρροῦσα λέγει·
[21] And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says,
[22] ὅσον ἂν χρόνον ἄκακοι ἔχωνται τῆς δικαιοσύνης, οὐκ αἰσχυνθήσονται· οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες, τῆς ὕβρεως ὄντες ἐπιθυμηταί, ἀσεβεῖς γενόμενοι ἐμίσησαν αἴσθησιν
[22] So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge,
[23] καὶ ὑπεύθυνοι ἐγένοντο ἐλέγχοις, ἰδοὺ προήσομαι ὑμῖν ἐμῆς πνοῆς ρῆσιν, διδάξω δὲ ὑμᾶς τὸν ἐμὸν λόγον.
[23] and are become subject to reproofs. Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech.
[24] ἐπειδὴ ἐκάλουν καὶ οὐχ ὑπηκούσατε καὶ ἐξέτεινα λόγους καὶ οὐ προσείχετε,
[24] Since I called, and ye did not hearken; and I spoke at length, and ye gave no heed;
[25] ἀλλὰ ἀκύρους ἐποιεῖτε ἐμᾶς βουλάς, τοῖς δὲ ἐμοῖς ἐλέγχοις οὐ προσείχετε,
[25] but ye set at nought my counsels, and disregarded my reproofs;
[26] τοιγαροῦν κἀγὼ τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ ἀπωλείᾳ ἐπιγελάσομαι, καταχαροῦμαι δὲ ἡνίκα ἔρχηται ὑμῖν ὄλεθρος,
[26] therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice against you when ruin comes upon you:
[27] καὶ ὡς ἂν ἀφίκηται ὑμῖν ἄφνω θόρυβος, ἡ δὲ καταστροφὴ ὁμοίως καταιγίδι παρῇ, καὶ ὅταν ἔρχηται ὑμῖν θλῖψις καὶ πολιορκία ἢ ὅταν ἔρχηται ὑμῖν ὄλεθρος.
[27] yea when dismay suddenly comes upon you, and your overthrow shall arrive like a tempest; and when tribulation and distress shall come upon you, or when ruin shall come upon you.
[28] ἔσται γὰρ ὅταν ἐπικαλέσησθέ με, ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ εἰσακούσομαι ὑμῶν· ζητήσουσί με κακοί, καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσουσιν·
[28] For it shall be that when ye call upon me, I will not hearken to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find me.
[29] ἐμίσησαν γὰρ σοφίαν, τὸν δὲ λόγον τοῦ Κυρίου οὐ προείλαντο,
[29] For they hated wisdom, and did not choose the word of the Lord:
[30] οὐδὲ ἤθελον ἐμαῖς προσέχειν βουλαῖς, ἐμυκτήριζον δὲ ἐμοὺς ἐλέγχους.
[30] neither would they attend to my counsels, but derided my reproofs.
[31] τοιγαροῦν ἔδονται τῆς ἑαυτῶν ὁδοῦ τοὺς καρποὺς καὶ τῆς ἑαυτῶν ἀσεβείας πλησθήσονται·
[31] Therefore shall they eat the fruits of their own way, and shall be filled with their own ungodliness.
[32] ἀνθ᾿ ὧν γὰρ ἠδίκουν νηπίους, φονευθήσονται, καὶ ἐξετασμὸς ἀσεβεῖς ὀλεῖ.
[32] For because they wronged the simple, they shall be slain; and an inquisition shall ruin the ungodly.
[33] ὁ δὲ ἐμοῦ ἀκούων κατασκηνώσει ἐπ᾿ ἐλπίδι καὶ ἡσυχάσει ἀφόβως ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦ.
[33] But he that hearkens to me shall dwell in confidence, and shall rest securely from all evil.
Chapter 2
ΥΙΕ, ἐὰν δεξάμενος ρῆσιν ἐμῆς ἐντολῆς κρύψῃς παρὰ σεαυτῷ,
My son, if thou wilt receive the utterance of my commandment, and hide it with thee;
[2] ὑπακούσεται σοφία τὸ οὖς σου, καὶ παραβαλεῖς καρδίαν σου εἰς σύνεσιν, παραβαλεῖς δὲ αὐτὴν ἐπὶ νουθέτησιν τῷ υἱῷ σου.
[2] thine ear shall hearken to wisdom; thou shalt also apply thine heart to understanding, and shalt apply it to the instruction of thy son.
[3] ἐὰν γὰρ τὴν σοφίαν ἐπικαλέσῃ καὶ τῇ συνέσει δῷς φωνήν σου, τὴν δὲ αἴσθησιν ζητήσῃς μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ,
[3] For it thou shalt call to wisdom, and utter thy voice for understanding;
[4] καὶ ἐὰν ζητήσῃς αὐτὴν ὡς ἀργύριον καὶ ὡς θησαυροὺς ἐξερευνήσῃς αὐτήν,
[4] and if thou shalt seek it as silver, and search diligently for it as for treasures;
[5] τότε συνήσεις φόβον Κυρίου καὶ ἐπίγνωσιν Θεοῦ εὑρήσεις.
[5] then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.
[6] ὅτι Κύριος δίδωσι σοφίαν, καὶ ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ γνῶσις καὶ σύνεσις·
[6] For the Lord gives wisdom; and from his presence come knowledge and understanding,
[7] καὶ θησαυρίζει τοῖς κατορθοῦσι σωτηρίαν, ὑπερασπιεῖ τὴν πορείαν αὐτῶν
[7] and he treasures up salvation for them that walk uprightly: he will protect their way;
[8] τοῦ φυλάξαι ὁδοὺς δικαιωμάτων καὶ ὁδὸν εὐλαβουμένων αὐτὸν διαφυλάξει.
[8] that he may guard the righteous ways: and he will preserve the way of them that fear him.
[9] τότε συνήσεις δικαιοσύνην καὶ κρίμα καὶ κατορθώσεις πάντας ἄξονας ἀγαθούς.
[9] Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment; and shalt direct all thy course aright.
[10] ἐὰν γὰρ ἔλθῃ ἡ σοφία εἰς σὴν διάνοιαν, ἡ δὲ αἴσθησις τῇ σῇ ψυχῇ καλὴ εἶναι δόξῃ,
[10] For if wisdom shall come into thine understanding, and discernment shall seem pleasing to thy soul,
[11] βουλὴ καλὴ φυλάξει σε, ἔννοια δὲ ὁσία τηρήσει σε,
[11] good counsel shall guard thee, and holy understanding shall keep thee;
[12] ἵνα ρύσηταί σε ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ κακῆς καὶ ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς λαλοῦντος μηδὲν πιστόν.
[12] to deliver thee from the evil way, and from the man that speaks nothing faithfully.
[13] ὦ οἱ ἐγκαταλείποντες ὁδοὺς εὐθείας τοῦ πορεύεσθαι ἐν ὁδοῖς σκότους·
[13] Alas for those who forsake right paths, to walk in ways of darkness;
[14] οἱ εὐφραινόμενοι ἐπὶ κακοῖς καὶ χαίροντες ἐπὶ διαστροφῇ κακῆ·
[14] who rejoice in evils, and delight in wicked perverseness;

5] ὧν αἱ τρίβοι σκολίαι καὶ καμπύλαι αἱ τροχιαὶ αὐτῶν
[15] whose paths are crooked, and their courses winding;
[16] τοῦ μακράν σε ποιῆσαι ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ εὐθείας καὶ ἀλλότριον τῆς δικαίας γνώμης.
[16] to remove thee far from the straight way, and to estrange thee from a righteous purpose.
[17] υἱέ, μή σὲ καταλάβῃ κακὴ βουλή, ἡ ἀπολιποῦσα διδασκαλίαν νεότητος καὶ διαθήκην θείαν ἐπιλελησμένη·
[17] My son, let not evil counsel overtake thee, of her who has forsaken the instruction of her youth, and forgotten the covenant of God.
[18] ἔθετο γὰρ παρὰ τῷ θανάτῳ τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς καὶ παρὰ τῷ ἅδῃ μετὰ τῶν γηγενῶν τοὺς ἄξονας αὐτῆς.
[18] For she has fixed her house near death, and guided her wheels near Hades with the giants.
[19] πάντες οἱ πορευόμενοι ἐν αὐτῇ οὐκ ἀναστρέψουσιν, οὐδὲ μὴ καταλάβωσι τρίβους εὐθείας· οὐ γὰρ καταλαμβάνονται ὑπὸ ἐνιαυτῶν ζωῆς.
[19] None that go by her shall return, neither shall they take hold of right paths, for they are not apprehended of the years of life.
[20] εἰ γὰρ ἐπορεύοντο τρίβους ἀγαθάς, εὕροσαν ἂν τρίβους δικαιοσύνης λείας.
[20] For had they gone in good paths, they would have found the paths of righteousness easy.
[21] χρηστοὶ ἔσονται οἰκήτορες γῆς, ἄκακοι δὲ ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ· ὅτι εὐθεῖς κατασκηνώσουσι γῆν, καὶ ὅσιοι ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ.
[21] For the upright shall dwell in the earth, and the holy shall be left behind in it.
[22] ὁδοὶ ἀσεβῶν ἐκ γῆς ὀλοῦνται, οἱ δὲ παράνομοι ἐξωσθήσονται ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς.
[22] The paths of the ungodly shall perish out of the earth, and transgressors shall be driven away from it.
Chapter 3
ΥΙΕ, ἐμῶν νομίμων μὴ ἐπιλανθάνου, τὰ δὲ ρήματά μου τηρείτω σὴ καρδία·
My son, forget not my laws; but let thine heart keep my words:
[2] μῆκος γὰρ βίου καὶ ἔτη ζωῆς καὶ εἰρήνην προσθήσουσί σοι.
[2] for length of existence, and years of life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
[3] ἐλεημοσύναι καὶ πίστεις μὴ ἐκλιπέτωσάν σε, ἄφαψαι δὲ αὐτὰς ἐπὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ, καὶ εὑρήσεις χάριν·
[3] Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; but bind them about thy neck: so shalt thou find favour:
[4] καὶ προνοοῦ καλὰ ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ἀνθρώπων.
[4] and do thou provide things honest in the sight of the Lord, and of men.
[5] ἴσθι πεποιθὼς ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐπὶ Θεῷ ἐπὶ δὲ σῇ σοφίᾳ μὴ ἐπαίρου·
[5] Trust in God with all thine heart; and be not exalted in thine own wisdom.
[6] ἐν πάσαις ὁδοῖς σου γνώριζε αὐτήν, ἵνα ὀρθοτομῇ τὰς ὁδούς σου, ὁ δὲ πούς σου μὴ προσκόψῃ.
[6] In all thy ways acquaint thyself with her, that she may rightly direct thy paths.
[7] μὴ ἴσθι φρόνιμος παρὰ σεαυτῷ, φοβοῦ δὲ τὸν Θεὸν καὶ ἔκκλινε ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦ·
[7] Be not wise in thine own conceit; but fear God, and depart from all evil.
[8] τότε ἴασις ἔσται τῷ σώματί σου καὶ ἐπιμέλεια τοῖς ὀστέοις σου.
[8] Then shall there be health to thy body, and good keeping to thy bones.
[9] τίμα τὸν Κύριον ἀπὸ σῶν δικαίων πόνων καὶ ἀπάρχου αὐτῷ ἀπὸ σῶν καρπῶν δικαιοσύνης,
[9] Honour the Lord with thy just labours, and give him the first of thy fruits of righteousness:
[10] ἵνα πίμπληται τὰ ταμιεῖά σου πλησμονῆς σίτῳ, οἴνῳ δὲ αἱ ληνοί σου ἐκβλύζωσιν.
[10] that thy storehouses may be completely filled with corn, and that thy presses may burst forth with wine.
[11] Υἱέ, μὴ ὀλιγώρει παιδείας Κυρίου, μηδὲ ἐκλύου ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐλεγχόμενος·
[11] My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
[12] ὃν γὰρ ἀγαπᾷ Κύριος παιδεύει, μαστιγοῖ δὲ πάντα υἱὸν ὃν παραδέχεται.
[12] for whom the Lord loves, he rebukes, and scourges every son whom he receives.
[13] μακάριος ἄνθρωπος ὃς εὗρε σοφίαν καὶ θνητὸς ὃς εἶδε φρόνησιν·
[13] Blessed is the man who has found wisdom, and the mortal who knows prudence.
[14] κρεῖσσον γὰρ αὐτὴν ἐμπορεύεσθαι ἢ χρυσίου καὶ ἀργυρίου θησαυρούς.
[14] For it is better to traffic for her, than for treasures of gold and silver.
[15] τιμιωτέρα δέ ἐστι λίθων πολυτελῶν, οὐκ ἀντιτάξεται αὐτῇ οὐδὲν πονηρόν· εὔγνωστός ἐστι πᾶσι τοῖς ἐγγίζουσιν αὐτῇ, πᾶν δὲ τίμιον οὐκ ἄξιον αὐτῆς ἐστι.
[15] And she is more valuable than precious stones: no evil thing shall resist her: she is well known to all that approach her, and no precious thing is equal to her in value.
[16] μῆκος γὰρ βίου καὶ ἔτη ζωῆς ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτῆς, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἀριστερᾷ αὐτῆς πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα· ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτῆς ἐκπορεύεται δικαιοσύνη, νόμον δὲ καὶ ἔλεον ἐπὶ γλώσσης φορεῖ.
[16] For length of existence and years of life are in her right hand; and in her left hand are wealth and glory: out of her mouth proceeds righteousness, and she carries law and mercy upon her tongue.
[17] αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτῆς ὁδοὶ καλαί, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ τρίβοι αὐτῆς ἐν εἰρήνῃ·
[17] Her ways are good ways, and all her paths are peaceful.
[18] ξύλον ζωῆς ἐστι πᾶσι τοῖς ἀντεχομένοις αὐτῆς, καὶ τοῖς ἐπερειδομένοις ἐπ᾿ αὐτὴν ὡς ἐπὶ Κύριον ἀσφαλής.
[18] She is a tree of life to all that lay hold upon her; and she is a secure help to all that stay themselves on her, as on the Lord.
[19] ὁ Θεὸς τῇ σοφίᾳ ἐθεμελίωσε τὴν γῆν, ἡτοίμασε δὲ οὐρανοὺς φρονήσει·
[19] God by wisdom founded the earth, and by prudence he prepared the heavens.
[20] ἐν αἰσθήσει ἄβυσσοι ἐρράγησαν, νέφη δὲ ἐρρύησαν δρόσους.
[20] By understanding were the depths broken up, and the clouds dropped water.
[21] Υἱέ, μὴ παραρρυῇς, τήρησον δὲ ἐμὴν βουλὴν καὶ ἔννοιαν,
[21] My son, let them not pass from thee, but keep my counsel and understanding:
[22] ἵνα ζήσῃ ἡ ψυχή σου, καὶ χάρις ᾖ περὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ. ἔσται δὲ �
�ασις ταῖς σαρξί σου καὶ ἐπιμέλεια τοῖς σοῖς ὀστέοις,
[22] that thy soul may live, and that there may be grace round thy neck; and it shall be health to thy flesh, and safety to thy bones:
[23] ἵνα πορεύῃ πεποιθὼς ἐν εἰρήνῃ πάσας τὰς ὁδούς σου, ὁ δὲ πούς σου οὐ μὴ προσκόψῃ·
[23] that thou mayest go confidently in peace in all thy ways, and that thy foot may not stumble.
[24] ἐὰν γὰρ κάθῃ, ἄφοβος ἔσῃ, ἐὰν δὲ καθεύδῃς, ἡδέως ὑπνώσεις·
[24] For if thou rest, thou shalt be undismayed; and if thou sleep, thou shalt slumber sweetly.
[25] καὶ οὐ φοβηθήσῃ πτόησιν ἐπελθοῦσαν, οὐδὲ ὁρμὰς ἀσεβῶν ἐπερχομένας·
[25] And thou shalt not be afraid of alarm coming upon thee, neither of approaching attacks of ungodly men.
[26] ὁ γὰρ Κύριος ἔσται ἐπὶ πασῶν ὁδῶν σου καὶ ἐρείσει σὸν πόδα, ἵνα μὴ σαλευθῇς.
[26] For the Lord shall be over all thy ways, and shall establish thy foot that thou be not moved.
[27] μὴ ἀπόσχῃ εὖ ποιεῖν ἐνδεῆ, ἡνίκα ἂν ἔχῃ ἡ χείρ σου βοηθεῖν·
[27] Forbear not to do good to the poor, whensoever thy hand may have power to help him.
[28] μὴ εἴπῃς· ἐπανελθὼν ἐπάνηκε, αὔριον δώσω, δυνατοῦ σου ὄντος εὖ ποιεῖν· οὐ γὰρ οἶδας τί τέξεται ἡ ἐπιοῦσα.
[28] Say not, Come back another time, to-morrow I will give; while thou art able to do him good: for thou knowest not what the next day will bring forth.
[29] μὴ τέκταινε ἐπὶ σὸν φίλον κακὰ παροικοῦντα καὶ πεποιθότα ἐπὶ σοί.
[29] Devise not evil against thy friend, living near thee and trusting in thee.
[30] μὴ φιλεχθρήσῃς πρὸς ἄνθρωπον μάτην, μήτι σε ἐργάσηται κακόν.
[30] Be not ready to quarrel with a man without a cause, lest he do thee some harm.
