“Commander Racine,” a reporter asked, “can you tell us if the murder of Taylor DuBois was connected to today’s events, and if so, was Councilman Guy Yeager involved?”

“No comment,” Racine replied. “Again, this is still an open investigation and I am not at liberty to say any more than what I have already shared with you.”

While Teddy was being looked over by the doctors, Blake stayed glued to the TV. He couldn’t believe he had been included as someone scheduled for termination, and that Charlie had allowed Racine to implicate Eli in the assassination attempt. Blake knew that the only way Eli could even have made it to the symposium was if Charlie had brought him there.

While Blake struggled for answers, he couldn’t help but think about Eli and the fact that he had saved Teddy’s life. There she was, lying in the hospital bed alive, all because of Eli. The more Blake thought about what happened, the more questions he had. First, there was the distraction, then the smoke, and then the shots. Pop, pop, pop, pop. He clearly remembered four shots, but there had to have been more because three people had been killed and several others injured.

Nothing was making sense, including the fact that Eli had died protecting the only woman Blake had ever loved. Then it hit him: if Eli took the bullet aimed at Teddy, who was the real shooter? If Eli wasn’t the shooter, Teddy could still be in danger.

Blake knew enough about the Others to know they wouldn’t stop until the assignment was completed. But who would they send? And then it hit him like a ton of bricks.

“Watch Charlie, Blake,” Eli had said as he struggled for his last breath. “Watch Charlie.”

To my Lord and Savior. Thank you! You are the reason for all things and without you I am a branch separated from its tree. A branch cannot produce fruit alone but must remain in the vine. In the same way, I cannot produce fruit alone but must remain in you. Thank you for this work. May it produce fruit that will last forever!

To my support system. Thank you for allowing me to be me!
