A Shadow of Wings Page 24

by Gayle, Linda

The butterfly riffled past them once more, and Izel chirped and leapt out of his father’s arms. And in three strides, wings beating furiously, he shot up and into the air to snap at the butterfly. He hovered for a moment, then, seeming to realize he was airborne, burbled and turned so his fathers could see.

Cam grabbed Dylan’s hand. “Is he…flying?”

Dylan blinked. “Is that supposed to happen?”

  “I don’t think so. I can’t fly.”

  Dylan smirked at him. “Jealous?”

  “Astonished.”

He laughed. “Oh, baby, I have a feeling our adventures are just beginning.”

Cam laughed too and watched their son experiment with dips and dives over the calm blue surface of the pool. There hadn’t been a creature like Izel for a thousand years. Even his name meant “unique” in Mayan, in tribute both to his origins and to the brave people who guarded him. Perhaps Dylan was right—the future was a great adventure waiting to unfold.

They’d take it all in stride. Whatever fate threw at them, he knew he and Dylan would face it together.
