“Since I went on that call last night, I told Stew I was leaving early.” He lifted a bag in the air and said, “I brought dinner. Hope that’s okay.” He removed a box of chicken and several smaller containers from the bag and placed them on the table.

“Sounds great.” She nodded toward the messy kitchen counter. “I’ve been trying to make bread, but Sydney has been a terror all day. I haven’t had a chance to start cooking.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. “Thank you. I’ll warm this up, and we can eat in a few minutes.” She opened the carton, and the aroma of fried chicken filled the room.

Derik took a deep breath and sighed.

Kelly’s hand went over her mouth, and she ran up the stairs.

Derik wrinkled his brow as he watched Kelly rush out of the room.

Win bounced down the stairs. “What’s wrong with Mom? She just came in the bathroom and told me to wash my hands down here. Why?”

“I’m not sure,” Derik said. His eyes landed on the chicken. He glanced up the stairs then back at the food and smiled.
