Class 12B Fights Back Page 10

by Tim Harris

Vex stifled a yawn, his curiosity fighting off sleep.

Mr. Sternblast strode over to the door at the side of the stage. “It is my pleasure to introduce you to our new staff member.”

A young woman stepped onto the stage. She was dressed in stylish white clothing, and her gray-blue eyes were as cold as a midwinter blizzard. A diamond bobby pin held her silver hair back in a meticulously neat high bun.

Mr. Sternblast rubbed his hands together. “Students, please welcome back Miss Belladonna Frost—your new assistant principal!”

Miss Frost strode across the stage. Ren Rivera noticed that her nose had gone back to the size noses should be.

“Look at her bobby pin,” whispered a boy in second grade.

Miss Frost turned quickly and gave the boy such a frightful stare, he burst into tears.

Only one person in the room responded positively to this bombshell. Mr. Bambuckle’s enthusiastic claps echoed loudly throughout the hall. “Bravo! Bravo!”

Miss Frost took the microphone, her icy whisper raising the hairs on the backs of the students’ necks. “We start our crackdown in exactly one week’s time,” she said. Then she sent a particularly piercing stare in the direction of Mr. Bambuckle. “Discipline is the new order.”

Mr. Bambuckle couldn’t hold back his smile. “How delightful,” he said and clicked his fingers. “Exactly one week. Did you hear that, Dodger?”

And with that, the blue jay shot out of his jacket pocket for its final mission.
