“Are you applying for the job?”
“I’m saying I’m interested—if you have an opening.”
“I’ll make one. I can’t think of anyone who’d be more perfect for the position.”
“Mmm.” She kissed his cheek and closed her eyes, inhaling the lime-and-starch scent of him, mingled with the rich aroma of brownies baking. “One thing’s for sure,” she said.
“What’s that?”
“If all else fails, we’ll always have chocolate.”
“Chocolate and each other. That’s a promise.”
The small, doubting part of her still shouted for her not to believe such a flimsy thing as a promise, but she silenced that voice with another kiss. Bryan wasn’t Troy, and she wasn’t the same woman she’d been even a week ago. She was willing to take a few more risks now.
