  Le Canard enchaîné (English: The Chained Duck or The Chained Paper, as “canard” is French slang meaning “newspaper”) is a satirical weekly newspaper in France. Its headquarters is in Paris. Founded in 1915, it features investigative journalism and leaks from sources inside the French government, the French political world, and the French business world, as well as many jokes and cartoons.

  6 Union for a Popular Movement (in French: Union pour un movement populaire) was a centre-right political in France, formed in 2002 as a merger of several centre-right parties under the leadership of President Jacques Chirac. It was renamed and succeeded in 2015 by The Republicans (in French: Les Républicains).

  7 Calvados is a department in the Normandy region in north-western France.

  8 The National Assembly, or the lower house of the bicameral French Parliament (the upper house being the Senate, in French: Sénat). The National Assembly’s legislators are known as députés. There are 577 députés, each elected by a single-member constituency through a two-round voting system. Each député has a deputy who, in case the député joins the government, takes their seat. If a député resigns, however, a by-election is necessary.

  9 UDF: Union for French Democracy (in French: Union pour la démocratie française), a centre-right political party founded in 1978 to support President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. It was succeeded in 2007 by the MoDem (Democratic Movement, in French: Mouvement Démocratique); a large groupe of former members of the UDF, however, founded the Nouveau Centre to support the presidential party UMP.

  10 A commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region, known for Pont-l’Évêque cheese.

  11 Socialist Party (in French: Parti socialiste), a social-democratic party in France, founded in 1969.
