‘Paige?’
‘We’d heard rumours of real life perverts sniffing around the children, so we were testing out the clubs defences and security measures,’ I stuttered.
‘Right,’ he nodded with a chuckle and a bemused shake of his head. ‘Here was me thinking you were spying on our daughter and Jeremy kissing in the kitchen.’
‘You knew?’ I gasped, waiting for the fallout.
‘Of course I did, Justin asked my permission for Jeremy to ask her out at her birthday party. I said as long as there was no hanky panky, I was fine with it.’
‘And you didn’t tell me?!’
‘Because I knew how you’d react,’ he said softly. ‘She’s a sensible young woman, not a little girl anymore, and she really likes him. Look, Paige, really look at them,’ he urged, stepping forward to turn me around to see they were kissing again. ‘Don’t they remind you of us on our first date? We had obstacles thrown in our way, and we were miserable being kept apart from each other, I don’t want that to happen to my daughter. If Jeremy can make her happy now, I say let him. We can worry about the future when the time comes.’
‘She does look happy,’ I sighed, putting my hands over his as he pulled me back against him.
‘So am I forgiven?’ Poppie asked.
‘You are,’ I nodded as the four of us watched our eldest children, who were totally oblivious to our presence.
‘Not by me you’re not, Poppie Cavendish,’ Justin stated as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. ‘Not only did you interrupt my one and only pint of beer a week, you’d better explain to me why our car has a section of barbed wire fence and a load of bushes attached to the back of it.’
‘To balance out the ones at the front?’ she offered with a giggle, making us all laugh. We left Daisy and Jeremy in peace and headed back to the front of the club.
‘My dad caught the perverts,’ came my fourteen-year-old son Xander’s gleeful voice from behind us. ‘O, hey Mum, what are you and Auntie Poppie doing here?’ he asked, looking confused. ‘Were you reinforcements?’
‘Totally busted,’ I laughed as the entire club, including Daisy and Jeremy, came out to stare in astonishment at Poppie and me all dressed in black.
‘Never a dull moment with you, Mrs. Wright,’ Alec chuckled. ‘Part of the reason I fall more in love with you every day.’
