  Council of Women – The appendant leadership body of the Herewardi. They determine whether the Herewardi will go to war or not. They make all domestic laws.

  Counting Bird – A past horse-master of the Sharaka. A brother of Dancing Rabbit. Onamingo’s brother-in-law. He is an old man by the time of the pow wow at the Crater and fears he will not live to see his home again if he moves with the tribes to Ur Ford.

  Crawling Bat – A young brave chosen as a suitor by Chic-Noy-Hay during the Lover’s Dance.

  Crooked Jack – A Herewardi fyrd commander under Sur Sceaf and Sur Spear. Battle hardened and deeply trusted advisor to Sur Sceaf. The jack-daw is his family sigil.

  Dak- Nickname of Mendaka

  Dancing Feather – Daughter of Sparrow Hawk and Granddaughter of Onamingo.

  Dancing Rabbit – Wife of Onamingo and mother of Taneshewa. She is from the Cherokee tribe.

  Deer Pony – The wife of Hound’s Tongue, from the Red Tribes.

  Degataga – The son of Turtle Duck. He’s a Sharaka fisherman on the coast by Ur Ford

  Dog Soldiers – The title given to Red Men braves.

  Dominikers – Humans who serve the Pitter Empire as merchants, and tax and tithe collectors

  Do-Tsu-Wa – The Red Bird, the pseudonym under which Redith operated when she was a young woman.

  Drum Runner – A Red Man brave. He is a farseer and reports to Sur Sceaf what was transpiring between the Pitters and the Frink Glen Band at the Battle of Frink Glen.

  Dusty Bull – Chief of the Bull Clan come out of Tahlequa with Onamingo. He offers his support of Sur Sceaf at the first council of talking chiefs.

  Dycons – Men who form an administrative body of the Quailor, operating under the High Priests.

  Earth Drum – Sharaka baby. Grandson of Charging Beef. Charging Beef uses Earth Drum to elicit sympathy for the cause of the Sharaka moving to join the Herewardi.

  Elder Moot – Another name for the Roufy-Trouf

  Elfbeard – Once a warrior who served under Sur and Sur Spear. He was most known for his hunting skills and hounds. Rejected lover of Sagwi, because of his practicing of polygamy.

  Elijah von Hollar – The brother of Ludwig von Hollar and chief high priest of the Quailor. Sur Sceaf’s great uncle.

  Elk Clan – One of the Klamath clans

  Elrus – A past prophet and seer who had open communion with the gods and the Elves and established the Elven Monestaries in Taxus.

  The Elwas- The rune of power.

  Emperor of Pitterdom – Hryre Seath

  Ethelwynn – Wife of King Sur Spear. Mother of Long Swan

  Eugeners – Human Rogue Tribesmen who formed an alliance with the Pitters, allowing the Pitters to build a Zonga on the Whilamut.

  The Evil Generation – The civilizations that preceded the current generation and were destroyed by the earth changes, burning stars, and their own pernicious and contentious ways.

  Faechild – Sur Sceaf’s third wife. She’s of royal Baldurean descent. Sister of Ilkchild and daughter of Ilker.

  Faehunig – Lover that rejected Long Swan and eloped with his best friend Saxwulf. Eloped on the day she was meant to wed Long Swan.

  Fat Elk – A talking chief

  Father Guardians – Spiritual leaders and ancestors of the Sharaka

  Feather – A nickname for Long Swan by reason of his much writing with a quill.

  Fire Ant – A Sharaka scout serving under Mendaka

  Flying Wolf- The Sharaka name for Ludwig von Hollar

  Folk Moot – Any meeting of the Herewardi people

  Folk Mouth – The oral history of the Herewardi people.

  Forty-Four Laws – the sacred laws that govern the Herewardi

  Frey – The Herewardi god of fertility

  Freya – The Herewardi goddess of fertility

  Frink Glen Clan – A combination clan composed of Sharaka and Klamath tribesmen who keep their flocks and herds in the high desert. They were attacked by one of the first acts of coordinated aggression in the West by the Pitter legions.

  Fur Puller – Going Snake’s hound pup

  Fyrd – A band of 144 elite Herewardi warriors. The men usually remain part of the same fyrd most of their lives, serving under a single heretoga. They begin their bonding as a military unit while still young blood warriors.

  Goddess Walpurga – Herewardi goddess. She blesses the waters and the flora of the lands.

  Goddess Yster – A Herewardi goddess of fertility. Her sign and token is the pink moon, or the Moonth of the Skipping Lambs, or April.

  Godija – Herewardi priestesses who serve in the synagogue of Odhin.

  Going Snake – Mendaka’s youngest son. Seven years old at the time of this story. His hound Fur Puller acted as a catalyst for the encounter of Taneshewa and Sur Sceaf.

  Gondulwulf the Elf-Talker – The past wizard-king of the Herewardi Third Kingdom of the heptarchy. Forefather of Paloma.

  The Good Goddess – Refers to Freya

  Goose Face – A young brave.

  Govannon – The master-wizard from the White Mountains of the Apache. He is half Herewardi, half Apache. He is the adoptive father of Willona. The greatest metallurgist and sword-artificer.

  Green Beetles – The youngest order of Herewardi messengers within the Herewardi Kingdom. Page-boys. Usually at the age of young puberty.

  The Growling – a race of humans who suffer a deformative skin disease causing them to have blisters and blains all over their bodies. They are the subjects of Queen Gloomulah, queen of the Underground.

  The Half-King – A name for Kanarus. Called the Half-King because he is not officially recognized as a king by the Roufy-Trouf but has the potential to earn their authorization, at which point he would become a true king.

  Halls of ValHollar – A haven in the Godly Realms for the noble descendants of Ullr. Where the spirits of the deceased rest in the bosom of Ullr.

  Ha-O-Zinne – A young Sharaka maiden who takes part in the Lover’s Dance, choosing Chihene as her suitor.

  Hat’s Loss – The deceased husband of Sagwi. Died shortly after marrying Sagwi.

  Heimdall – A Herewardi god who is the hearkener of the gods. Legend says he can even hear the growing of the yew tree and the wool of a sheep’s back lengthen.

  Heratoga – A leader of an Herewardi army. Can lead one or many fyrds.

  Hereward – Ancient longfather of the Herewardi people. He is the Ur-Father of the Herewardi people. He is the founding progenitor of the Herewardi.

  Herewardi – The descendants of an enclave of scholars, priests, and warriors, who restored the tribe of Hereward.

  Hickoryans – The human inhabitants of the south eastern portion of Panygyrus, who form secret alliances against the Pitter Empire. They name themselves in honor of the hickory tree, known for its strength and endurance.

  High Lord Syrus – Another name for Sur Spear

  High Priests Quorum – A religious and governing body of the Quailor people.

  Horse Knuckles – A sentry at the door of the long lodge.

  Hotuekhaashtait – The Standing Bull

  Hound’s Tongue – A chief and brave who has fought the Pitters in many battles.

  Hryre Seath – The Pitter Emperor.

  Ilkchild – Son of Ilker. Brother of Faechild. Adopted son of Sur Sceaf. Reknowned for his perfection of beauty.

  Ilker –Father of Kanarus, Ilkchild, and Faechild. He is the descendant of Baldurean royalty. His grave was never found.

  Jackie Doo – The name of endearment for Hrothgar, known as Crooked Jack.

  Jakob Inteus Walker – A Balmorean, married to Yggep of the Poisoned Lands, a conniving traitor. Made a pact with the Pitter Zonga of Eugene to betray and decoy the Herewardi away from the Gates of the Umpqua.

  Jywds – An ancient race who escaped the labor camps of Nu Yalk and fled to the West.

  Kanarus – Aka the Half-King. Born with the name Kane. Later was named by his men Kanarus, meaning “Kane, de
scendant of Arundel, and Hrus.” He is the son of Ilker and leads a band of irregular Herewardi fyrds in the White Mountains of the Apache. His people are called the Kaninchens by the Quailor and the Apache. ?

  Kane – The first name given to Kanarus.

  Kaninchens – The descendents and adherents of the Half-King Kanarus. ?

  Katus – The Blind Seer. A Pitter who is the head of the Black Brotherhood.

  Kelvin – Son of Jackie Doo and Roana.

  Klamath Tribe – A tribe of Red Men who pre-existed and persisted through the earth changes. They live in the Klamath Basin.

  Knighton – A Quailor Dycon who voted with Fromer to remain autonomous and separated from the three tribes. A proponent of the Retrenchment Movement.

  Lakota Tribe – A Buffalo Nations tribe. They inhabit the great plains.

  Lana – The Quailor wife of Sur Sceaf, whom he betrothed at the age of seventeen. She is Sur Sceaf’s second wife.

  Leof – A young blood Herewardi scout, serving under Sur Sceaf at the battle of Frink Glen and Woon Stone.

  Leofric – One of the Herewardi Seven Longfathers. Father of Sur.

  Lightning Clan – A clan of Cherokee.

  Little Doe – Wife of Sur Sceaf’s blood brother, Mendaka.

  Lone Dog – One of the three ruffians who assaulted Sur Sceaf and joined the renegade band of Standing Bull.

  Long Swan – Sur Sceaf’s most beloved brother. Son of Sur Spear and Ethelwynn. Raised as a wizard at a very young age. The youngest lore master in Herewardi history. AKA Feather

  Longfather Howrus – A forefather of the Herewardi. The son of Hrus-Syr-Os. He avenged his father’s death and led the surviving Herewardi to refuge in the wilderness of the Appalachians. Wrote the Forty-Four Laws.

  Lord of the Wild Hunt – Another name for Odhin

  Lu Hollar – Short name for Ludwig von Hollar.

  Ludwig von Hollar – The past high priest of the Quailor. He was slain in the battle of Salem. The first Quailor to take up arms and encourage warfare.

  Mahallah – The ruling queen of the Herewardi, alongside her husband Sur Spear. Daughter of Ludwig von Hollar and Redith. Mother of Sur Sceaf. Half Quailor, Half Sharaka.

  Malcolm of Omala – A great wizard of the Herewardi in the Taxus lands. The father of Paloma.

  Manitou – A holy being or god of the Red Men.

  Melyngoch – Brother of Sur Sceaf. Son of Sur Spear and Clotilde. Believes himself to be the best choice for the commission to unify and lead the three tribes. Groomed and manipulated by his mother to take part in slandering and attempting to supercede his brother Sur Sceaf.

  Mendaho – Taneshewa’s closest friend. A dear friend of Sur Sceaf. Scholarly keeper of the Mountain Scrolls which contain history the Sharaka. AKA Meny

  Mendaka – Sur Sceaf’s blood-brother and best friend from youth. Sharaka talking chief of the Snake Clan. The loyal advocate of Sur Sceaf amongst the Red Men.

  Meny – Nick name for Mendaho.

  Mesculera Coloratus – An Apache chief visiting the Sharaka at Unequa.

  Milka – Nickname for Milkchild

  Milkchild – Jywdic wife of Sur Sceaf. Daughter of Rabbi Amschel. Sur Sceaf’s fourth wife.

  Mole Finger – One of the Brothers Three. A Sharaka far-seer.

  Morning Bird – The wife of Snake Horse, Onamingo’s right-hand man.

  Morning Dipper – A Klamath child that used to follow Taneshewa around.

  Muckenschnabel – The last name of the Quailor dycon Fromer.

  Muryh – Also known as The Master Builder. Great architect of the stone city of the Sand Wand Islands and the fortress at Fort Rock.

  Ndee – What the Apache call themselves.

  Neorxanawang – Its meaning is “The Garden of the Elves.” It is a mythical place.

  Nick – Another name for Odhin

  Norn Sisters – The three sisters of fate, who existed before the world was created. They are eternal and enduring.

  Northern Tribes – The Buffalo Nations and the Snowmen, and any Rogue settlements within their lands.

  Nunnehi – The spiritual protectors of the Red Men.

  Oakheart – A silver harrier from Fort Rock. Delivers the message to Mendaka, that Sur Sceaf did not arrive at Fort Rock on the appointed day.

  Odhin – The Sky-Father. According to lore is the earliest father of the Herewardi people. The chief of the Herewardi gods.

  Offa – An older brother of Sur Sceaf. While a youth, he detested his younger brother’s wild antics.

  Old Grokk – Nickname for Elfbeard

  Onamingo – He is Sharaka chief of chiefs. Of Cherokee descent. Father of Taneshewa. Married to Dancing Rabbit. Also known as the Red King.

  Os – The Herewardi name for the creator god. The god of all gods.

  Owl Clan – A clan of Sharaka, given to prophecy and spiritual gifts.

  The Owl Spirit – A Sharaka spirit entity

  Paloma – Sur Sceaf’s first wife. The daughter of the famed wizard Malcolm of the Omala. The faery-queen of Sur Sceaf’s bride-covey. The head of the Council of Women. Mother of Arundel III

  Pitters – Transhuman species, devoted to the worship of Angrar, their god. Part rat, part human. Humanity’s foremost enemy.

  Pock Face – One of the three ruffians that attacked Sur Sceaf on the road to DiAhman. A follower and doting friend of Standing Bull. A young Sharaka.

  Prenus – An ancient Saxon king venerated by the Herewardi.

  Pulls-His-Feathers – The son of the Klamath chief.

  Pyrsyrus – The son of Syrus (aka Sur Spear). King of the Sand Wand Islands. The first Herewardi king of this era to reach the third stage of civilization – which is to build cities of stone.

  Quailor – A pacifist religious culture that believes in the Christ. They govern themselves by a collection of books they call The Complete Holy Scriptures.

  Quants – People who have only a portion of Red Man’s blood. They are called Quants by those who are full-blooded Red Men.

  Red Bird – Redith as a young child. The main protagonist of the Sharaka tale, Da-Tsu-Wa.

  Red Nations – All Red Men Nations.

  Redangus – The son of Turtle Duck. A sharaka.

  Redelfis – Son of Mendaka and Little Doe. Sharaka youth but is unusual due to his red hair.

  Redith – Grandmother (Mo Mo) of Sur Sceaf. A seeress and one of the 22 female leaders in the Roufy-Trof. Sagwi and Thunder Horse’s sister. She is of Sharaka descent.

  Roana –Jackie Doo’s deceased and beloved wife. Died while giving birth.

  Rogue Nations – A loose conglomeration of white tribes. Most of which give no allegiance to any confederation.

  Rogue Tribes – See Rogue Nations.

  Rolling Thunder – A Sharaka brave trained for the Ring Ritual of the Eclipse. He broke his arm in a rock slide. Sur Sceaf took his place in the ritual.

  Roufy-Trouf – The ruling council of the Herewardi composed of 44 members, 22 males and 22 females.

  Rumbling Mountain – A Cherokee chief of the Lightning Clan.

  Rus-Syr-Os – Husband of Va-Eyra. He was slain in the battle of Salem.

  Saga-Jah-El-Ea – A descriptive name for Willona meaning, “She who descends from the gods.”

  Sagawis – See Sagwi

  Sagwi – Sur Sceaf’s great aunt and advisor. She advises many of the younger generation and is the Sharaka midwife and medicine woman.

  Sanangrar – A member of the Black Brotherhood and a Pitter commissar.

  Sasa – A name for Sur Spear in the context of a Sharaka folk tale. A few call him by this name, which means “Swan.”

  Sasa the Traveler – See Sasa

  Sasa-Mingo – Onamingo’s mother.

  Sassia the Seeress – One of the wives of Howrus. The Goddess Yster revealed to her the Path of Harmony.

  Saxwulf – Was Long Swan’s best friend. He is called the Bride-Stealer because he eloped with Faehunig on the night before she was to wed Long Swan.
r />   Schmo von Hollar – A Quant medicine man in the Sharaka tribe. Half Quailor and half Sharaka.

  Segnir – A young blood who falls in the battle of Frink Glen. Sur Sceaf saves him.

  The Seven Forefathers – The forefathers of the Herewardi Nation. The king line of the Herewardi Nation.

  The Seven Grandfathers – The Sharaka forefathers. The line of chiefs.

  Sharaka – A tribe of mixed origins, they are mainly composed of Cherokee and Herewardi.

  Sharaka Talking Chiefs – The chiefs who have been chosen as spokesmen for the clans and tribes of the Sharaka

  Shell Toad – A young Sharaka brave. Friend of Redelfis. He was left at an elk to await a mule to haul it into camp.

  Shining Moon – Sur Sceaf’s sixth wife, dear friend of Mendaho, a Sharaka.

  Silver Harriers – The second stage in a young blood’s training. They act as scouts, circuit riders and couriers for the military. They are usually between the ages 15 and 16.

  Skull Worm – A Pitter commissar.Known to be especially brutal and severe.

  Smoking Duck – a talking chief

  Smoking Thunder – a Cheyenne shaman and medicine man.

  Smoking Toad – A brave that claims Standing Bull has taken valor that does not belong to him.

  Snake Clan – One of the clans composed of both Klamath and Sharaka peoples.

  Snake Horse – Onamingo’s right hand man. A Cherokee. Husband of Morning Bird. Fought for Sur Sceaf in the battle of Frink Glen.

  Snowmen – The Red Men tribes of the northern Kanada.

  Sparrow Hawk – The older sister of Taneshewa. Daughter of Onamingo and Dancing Rabbit.

  Spirit Chiefs – Powerful medicine men who have distinguished themselves through talents and services. They come from many Red Men tribes.

  Standing Bull – A member of the Klamath tribe who joined the Sharaka at DiAhman and was rejected for the most part from the Klamath tribe for his rebelliousness within the tribe and his rakish fornication. He is the foremost of the ruffians that accosted Sur Sceaf on the trail to DiAhman. He stood as opposition to the plan of uniting the three tribes.

  Starkwulf – The original name of the Wose, the former king in Zamora.

  Stays-Her-Ground – A Sharaka woman.

  Stone Face – One of the Brothers Three. He is a far-seer. The brother of Mole Finger and Rags.

  Sun Cryer – A great Red Man chief from the Buffalo Nations.
