Garrick nodded. “I think they do. You know, it was obvious to everyone but you that I was madly in love with you, and it wasn’t that hard to tell you had a thing for Warren, either.”
Samantha sighed. “I made a fool of myself over him, didn’t I?”
He didn’t answer.
“Admit it, Garrick.”
“A little,” he said, a grin lighting his face. “But it brought us together, didn’t it?” He placed a warm hand on her stomach. “And it gave us a precious gift to start our life together.”
She looked up at him, feeling suddenly vulnerable at the mention of Warren’s paternity. “You don’t mind, really?”
He shook his head. “I love this child more than I thought possible. Because he or she comes from you, and because this child is what finally brought us together. It doesn’t matter who the father is—we’ll make him or her completely ours.”
She couldn’t keep from grinning. “I love you, Garrick.”
“And I love you, too, Sam.”
Epilogue
Samantha turned sideways, examining her silhouette in the mirror. She laughed at what she saw. Her lacy white wedding gown flowed down over the less-thansubtle swell of her abdomen. “You don’t think it’s too ridiculous?”
“You look lovely, Sam. Doesn’t she, Mom?”
“I look like a pregnant lady,” Samantha countered. “And pregnant ladies don’t wear wedding dresses like this. But I should just give up on getting an impartial opinion from the two of you.” She allowed Beth to pin her veil to her hair. “We really should have done this a while ago, before I started to show quite so much.”
“Big weddings take time to plan, Sam,” Jenny told her, not for the first time.
“I know. But I think this is going to end up embarrassing Garrick. Our picture in the paper is going to look pretty silly.”
Jenny turned to her mother. “I think she’s nervous.”
“Nervous? I’m not nervous! For goodness sakes, I’m only marrying my own husband.”
Beth and Jenny exchanged a look. “She’s nervous,” Jenny said.
Beth gave her shoulder a squeeze. “It’s okay, Sam. I know how important this is to you. The last time you married Garrick, it wasn’t because you loved him. Now you do, and that’s a big difference. Marrying for love is always a bigger deal.”
Samantha gave her mother-in-law a wry look. “Okay, so I’m nervous. All I can say is, Garrick had better not laugh at me as I come down the aisle.”
Beth stepped back and surveyed her with a judicious eye. “I don’t think there’s much danger of that, my dear. No danger at all.”
Jenny smiled. “We’ll be lucky if he doesn’t take one look at you, call off the ceremony and take you away to ravish you! You look gorgeous. Pregnancy becomes you.”
“Speaking of calling off the ceremony,” Beth commented with a wink, “we’d better get moving so he doesn’t think you’ve changed your mind.”
Entering the crowded church a few minutes later to the strains of the wedding march, Samantha had eyes only for her husband. He stood at the altar, looking resplendent in a dark gray morning suit, and even from her distance she could see the love and desire shining out of his eyes. He was smiling, but with happiness, not amusement, as she came belly-first down the aisle.
Samantha knew, looking at him, that they shared a love that would last their whole lifetimes, no matter what else happened. She quickened her steps toward him, eager to pledge her love.
