Payton laughed through her tears. “I think I love you.”
“I know I love you.” Volos smiled proudly, his heart exploding. “I’ll find you, no matter what,” Volos said with a quick kiss to her wet lips.
Payton watched Volos take off for the water’s edge. She couldn’t believe her best friend was alive and that she’d somehow survived the bird attack. Payton pivoted and took off as fast as her bruised body would allow, straight toward the hospital.
Volos threw his body into the cold water. Brothers, he shouted.
Volos, came an immediate response from them all.
The dome, Attor said. I couldn’t protect it. His voice caught, I am so sorry.
Don’t be sorry, brother. Let’s just get the clan out, he stated with the calmness of a true leader. Who’s accounted for.
Father is out, Ladon replied. I saw him surface before.
Good, Volos replied. Jo? Wyvern?
A silence hung in the water. I haven’t seen them, Attor said defeat coating his words.
Right, Volos swallowed hard, then let’s find them.
Ryu came onto the line, his words were fractured and incomplete.
Jo is here, he came to help me. He saw me losing against the phoenix.
We have Embah, together we wrapped him tight with our wings.
We are going down, want to freeze him,
Fuca Plate… tectonic plate, o-o-only way…
Deep…
Cold…
Frozen bird is a d-d-dead b-b-bird…
Volos roared, Get to the Fuca Plate, I will not have Jo’s death on my hands, unless I’m killing the son of a bitch myself! Volos beat his wings and flew with great speed out to the tectonic plate that lies just offshore, the entire way swearing and cursing about a brother who shit him off more ways than a Hello Kitty factory, but he was still a brother and today was not a good day to die. Ryu, he shouted. Ryu.
I’m going down…
Kicked Jo off… he’s f-f-frozen…
He isn’t breathing.
Floating up now… g-g-get him…
Bird dead.
I’m...
Nothing more was heard from Ryu, Volos and the brothers hung their heads for a minute. A dragon was dead and that was something they all felt.
Volos thumped his wings as he scouted over the plate, it was huge and had many crevasses and places to sink into oblivion.
“Where are you, Jo?” he mumbled, his head on a set swivel from left to right as he swam further up the Fuca Plate. Suddenly, he saw something, he looked closer and spotted the dark shape floating up as he hovered over the Plate. Diving down, he saw his brother’s face—white, lifeless, frozen. Jo’s wings were blacker than white, and his arms hung limply by his side. Volos let out a roar of sworn vengeance against the phoenix. He bellowed down the dragon airways instructing his brothers that he was coming in with Jo, he wasn’t breathing, and he needed the clan medic now. Be ready.
Volos sat outside the makeshift medic’s tent. They had found a small island far offshore, the clan had all checked in and dispersed around other clans for sanctuary. When a new dome was erected they would return, but until then they had refugee status and would be looked after by the other clans.
“Is he all right?” Wyvern came out of his room, a small raspy cough was all he had to show for being trapped under a fallen brick wall. He had gone to save some small school children who were disorientated with the sudden influx of water. He managed to get them out but got caught himself. Attor had found and released him before the air around his gills ran out.
“I haven’t heard yet, brother.” Volos looked at his littlest brother and smiled proudly. “You did good, kid.” Volos nodded. “Very proud of you.”
Wyvern hated to be called a kid, but at least this time it was in regards to a good thing.
Attor and Ladon wandered in. “Any news?”
Volos shook his head. “I’m sure he will be fine. He’s a tenacious shit kicker, can’t believe he was going to sacrifice himself to kill Embah,” Attor said as the doctor came out and the brothers all stood to receive any news on the condition of their blood.
“He will live,” the doctor told them.
The sigh of relief from the chests of Volos and Attor was visible.
The physician continued, “He has some wing damage, the tips and membrane have suffered frostbite. I assume this occurred when he and Ryu wrapped their wings around the phoenix and dove straight down to the tectonic plate.” The doctor spoke with awe in his voice. “The cold has never been a friend of the phoenix, but for these two dragons to be willing to hold him together, wrapped tightly in a sacrificial burrito and do the dive…” he shook his head in admiration, “… he’s very lucky Ryu kicked him off when he did. Otherwise, he would have died along with the others.” A small pause of respect was given right then for a dragon lost in battle. “So, the wings should heal without complications, but I wouldn’t have him out in any battles for at least two months.”
“Thank you, doc,” Volos said, as he picked up his coffee off the waiting room chair.
“We have all wanted to see the little shit dead at one time or another, but… wow…the Full Monty was not something I expected from Jo.”
“That’s because you have no faith in me,” Jo spoke from the doorway, his voice was raspy, and he looked like lukewarm death. His wings were exposed and strapped for healing, but at least he was walking and giving shit.
“I’m pleased you lived, Jo,” Volos said. “You ever do shit like that again, and you will want to fucking die. Otherwise, I will fucking kill you myself.”
“And whatever is left, I’m going to kill again.” Attor smirked, resting a brotherly hand on his shoulder.
Leaving his brothers to a dragon bonding session, Volos walked off, wiping a small tear of relief from falling down his cheek. He couldn’t sit here and waste time with these dick whistles, he had a gorgeous woman to check in on.
Payton laid next to Volos, the blue colored sheet covering their nakedness. “I have never made love to a dragon before.” She smiled as she turned onto her side, propping her head up with one hand as she trailed a finger lightly across Volos’ bare chest, his skin rippled and contracted under her touch.
“And, if I have my way, you will only be intimate with one dragon ever again,” Volos spoke softly, his voice raspy from the vigorous lovemaking session they had just experienced. Payton had made his body respond in a way that only a true soul mate could do. His body melted into hers and they became one as he thrust his cock into her over and over, the hunger of their tongues twisting and curling around each other as their bodies devoured one another in a ferocious attempt to become one. They had connected not only physically, but their souls joined and would forever be inseparable.
Payton battered her eyelashes. “Why, Volos, are you asking me to marry you?”
“No,” Volos replied firmly. He watched the air deflate from her bubble a little before he added, “I want more than just a piece of paper… I want you, forever.”
Payton smiled. “You got it, especially if you keep using that chocolate brownie scented aftershave.”
Volos laughed loudly. “Yeah… about that…”
Payton joined in his soft laughter. “On second thought…” she placed a kiss on his nose, “… don’t tell me. Today has been the most horrific and the most amazing day I’ve ever experienced in my whole entire life.”
“You saw Kylee?” Volos asked, his voice matching her softness.
“Yes. She was still in an induced coma, they’re trying to give her body a few days to start healing before they wake her up. She has an abundance of broken bones, a punctured lung, and a ruptured spleen. The doctor says her recovery will be long, but she will make a full recovery.”
Payton was so upset at her friend being caught up in this nightmare, but at least she would recover because Payton would make sure of it. Every painful step to the end, she would be there, cheering her on and telling her,
her ass doesn’t look fat. “I’m going back in first thing in the morning.” She looked up to Volos who was gazing down at her with adoration in his eyes that made her belly heat up again. “Want to come with me?
Volos chuckled. “Come or cum, as long as it’s with you. I’ll always be at your side.”
“What happens to the clan now?” Payton asked, as she rested her head back down on his shoulder. His arm instinctively curled up to cradle her head gently, her hair being twirled in his fingers was a feeling he adored.
“We rebuild,” Volos said calmly. “Battles are fought, some we win, some we lose, but the survival of the species depends on our ability to rebuild, stronger, fiercer and smarter.”
“Does the clan need a lawyer?” He felt her mouth tighten as she smiled against his chest. “I know this chick, she’s found herself suddenly unemployed. I can recommend her… reliable, tenacious and most importantly, honest.”
Volos laughed, his chest making her head bob as it rumbled with the laughter. “Yeah, I don’t know,” he said. “Can she suck paint off a wall?”
Payton slapped his chest playfully.
Volos added, “If she wears panties, it’s an instant fail.” He thundered with laughter as she climbed on top of him. Her legs straddled his hips as his hands found their home holding either side of her naked hips.
“Oaf,” Payton growled at him, lowering her chest down, her breasts pressing against him. Resting her elbows either side of his head she stared down into his glacial eyes, lost to the love she had for him.
“Payton’s oaf.” He grinned, the twinkle from his eyes promised her a future of mystery, a future of battles, a future of magic, and a future of undying eternal love.
Payton couldn’t believe she had gotten so lucky, her granny would have been so proud.
“My oaf,” she said placing a soft kiss on his lips.
