Batteries Not Included Page 4

Neither of us could speak for a while. We just clung to one another as our breathing slowly returned to normal.

“So, er, do you think you might want to do that again, some time?” I asked diffidently, mentally crossing my fingers. After all, this was already depressingly close to being the longest relationship I’d had in months.

“Nah, I thought I’d look up your mum tomorrow—joking, okay!” Shane laughed as I glared at him. Then he licked his lips, deliberately. “Still an arse virgin, aren’t I? Think you’ll have to do something about that.” He settled back down, his head on my chest. “Then we’d better see about getting me a job. I’ve heard there’s good money for celebrity lookalikes, which is just as well if we ever want to get a bigger place.”

We. He said we. I grinned happily at the ceiling.

“It’s going to take a bit of getting used to, though,” Shane sighed, snuggling into my neck. “I mean, if I’m not Cain Shepney, who am I?”

I kissed the top of his head, getting spiky hair in my mouth. I spat it out, but a faint taste of hair product remained. I decided I quite liked it. “Well, if you can forgive me being corny—after all, it is the season of mushy sentiment and all that crap—just remember: you’re the man of my dreams.”

And okay, he hit me with a pillow, but I could tell he was pleased, really.

  ABOUT J.L. MERROW

J.L. Merrow is that rare beast, an English person who refuses to drink tea. She read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, where she learned many things, chief amongst which was that she never wanted to see the inside of a lab ever again. Her one regret is that she never mastered the ability of punting one-handed whilst holding a glass of champagne.

She writes across genres, with a preference for contemporary gay romance and the paranormal, and is frequently accused of humour. Find her online at jlmerrow.com.
