“I think you will find it is not his fault” was Connor’s answer.
“Yes I know but still” replied Sarah, shocking Connor even more due to her being a nurse.
Connor’s focus was drawn from the table to the mentally disabled guy and what looked like his care worker. He was overcome with admiration for both of them. The disabled guy for trying to get on with his life and his helper for doing the job he was doing and bothering to care for someone. Apart from the disabled guy’s slightly unusual features when he showed various emotions you would never have known he was any different and Connor noticed that they were both dressed trendy, both wearing jeans, tee shirts and trainers, the carer also wearing a black leather jacket. It repulsed him to think of the comments that had come from his table but then he should not have been surprised. The urge to leave his seat and the group and join the other table was nearly too much, instead he sipped on his drink and reluctantly returned his focus to the group.
“Who ordered the steak?” asked one of the waitresses carrying two plates on each arm.
The meals were placed on the table and further drinks were ordered. It was as Connor’s was placed on the table and the others were tucking in to theirs that Connor noticed the disabled guy leaving with his carer. Connor watched through the distant window as they entered the garden area where they had to walk through a throng of lads and girls who were sat on the grass and the surrounding walls, smoking and drinking
“What do you think Connor?” asked Keith.
Connor just nodded his head having not heard what Keith had said to him. He was now focused on the garden outside and what his senses were telling him. Both the disabled guy and his carer had now disappeared out of sight but laughing could now be heard, making Connor feel uncomfortable.
“I’m just popping to the toilet I will be back in a minute”
“What are you doing your meal is here now?” enquired Hugh. Connor headed towards the toilet which was near the front entrance but instead of going in, he left through the front door and headed around towards the rear where the gardens were. His suspicions were correct because as he entered the garden he was greeted with a sight he had been dreading. The carer was lay on the grass holding his chin as though he had been hit, then stood there being mocked and looking like he was scared stiff was the disabled guy, who was now nervously scratching and rubbing his head and rocking from side to side.
Connor glanced around to see that the garden was almost empty meaning there would not be much help if he needed it. He stood out of the way watching and urging the carer to get up and for both of them to get the fuck out of there but the carer was having none of it. Jumping up off the floor he went for the well- built guy with a shaved head stood over him, but his attempted punch only glanced the guy making him more aggressive and his group of friends more lively and abusive. Connor ducked back behind the wall and pondered on what to do next. The guys at the table would start to notice something was wrong and would ask what took so long so he had to be quick if he was to do anything at all. His mind was made up when he looked back around the corner and the carer guy was now pinned up against the wall by his neck with the disabled guy being physically taunted.
Before the guy with the shaved head knew anything about it Connor had hit him square on the side of the head. Whilst reeling away and before he had chance to react, Connor had grabbed the guys right arm and pulled it up between his shoulder blades so hard the sound of muscle and tendons ripping and tearing could be heard. Managing to get up and crying out in pain the guy backed off and it was obvious the he had a dislocated shoulder. Connor wasted no time in making sure none of the others were prepared to join in when a guy with a hoodie approached him. Showing no emotion Connor grabbed his throat and swept his legs from under him. As he fell Connor kept hold of him around the neck and forced the back of his head hard onto the paving slabs, the crack of bone hitting the hard surface had the group of bullies gasping in horror.
Connor left the hoodie to bleed and approached the disabled guy who was stood with his carer against the wall.
“Are you both ok?” he asked with a soft but concerned voice.
The carer seemed overwhelmed but grateful and was ordered by Connor to leave straight away.
“Thank you”
“That’s ok now just go”
They both turned and left the garden area as Connor turned to face the crowd of intimidators who were still reeling from what had just happened. His breathing was still normal as he looked at them with contempt, their expressions giving away that they were concerned what might happen next. Nothing happened as Connor’s body language told them that his concern was for the safety of the pair that had just left and not to do anymore damage to them.
“Fuck it lets go” said one of the abusers, helping the guy with the dislocated arm.
Connor turned to leave and head back into the pub the way he left but before he reached the door Hugh was walking out.
“Are you ok Connor what are you doing out here”
Connor placed his arm around Hugh’s shoulder and guided him back into the pub so he would not see the casualties outside.
“I just needed some fresh air”

June 2011.
Connor reached the bar in the centre of town and could see through the window that the group were all gathered at the table and it looked like they were ordering food. Studying them all he placed his hands in his pockets and contemplated not going in at all. The memories of what he had done and the person he had become to fulfil his Grandfather’s dying wish and what he believed was his own destiny filled him with disgust and hatred for himself. It never once crossed his mind to stop now and regain his life and personality. This would never be an option until he was satisfied their lives were ruined beyond all recognition. He watched through the window and at Hugh in particular and remembered the day at the petrol station. As far as Hugh was concerned Connor had found his wallet and honesty prevailed with Connor giving it him back to which a friendship blossomed. Hugh would never know Connor had taken the wallet from his pocket as he passed him on the forecourt as they both stood waiting for a car to pull away from the petrol pumps. Hugh never felt the hand reaching into his pocket to remove the wallet he had just placed back in there after paying.
Connor smirked as his mind returned to him staring through the window from a distance at the frivolities inside the bar.
All of a sudden something dawned on him and an opportunity presented itself. Connor was due to be at a party in a week at Hugh and Sarah’s house which in turn would present an opportunity for him to take an item from the house that would be able to be used for the final part of his depraved plan. Standing outside the bar in the middle of Hereford he realised both Hugh and Sarah were inside which meant the house would be empty.
“Hi Hugh its Connor”
“Connor where are you we are about to order?”
“Oh you go on ahead I’m running a bit late so carry on without me. See you in a bit”
“Ok whatever you say”
Connor watched as Hugh disconnected the call and shook his head then carried on regardless. No sooner had Connor had placed his phone back into his pocket he was making his way towards the taxi rank.
“Yes sir”
“Hi Tupsley please”
Connor was confident he could be in and out in less than ten minutes and could be with them at the table in about half an hour. The taxi slowed down to wait for Connor to give his orders as they neared the destination.
“This is fine mate thank you very much”
Connor paid the fare making sure the driver dropped him off around the corner. Making sure the taxi disappeared without making his self look suspicious, Connor headed for Hugh and Sarah’s house. As he suspected the house looked empty which meant the babysitter wasn’t there and their daughter Ava must be at one of their parent’s house. Using the key Connor had stolen from them he opened the front door and carefully closed it beh
ind him then relocked it. The document he required would be in the safe in the bedroom so he calmly climbed the stairs and entered the bedroom. He glanced at the pictures on the wall of the three of them at a family portrait shoot that had obviously cost hundreds of pounds. It drew little reaction from Connor as he placed his hands on the wardrobe doors to where the safe was hidden at the back against the wall.
All of a sudden Connor was frozen to the spot and his senses were put on alert as voices could be heard down stairs in the hall.
“Shit who the fuck is that?”
As Connor whispered to himself he slowly and quietly closed the wardrobe doors and made his way towards the open bedroom door to see if he could see where the voices were coming from. His ears strained for clues as to who it was and what they were doing in the house. Whoever it was they seemed to be discussing something and their voices were getting clearer and louder. Connor glanced around the room to check out the best hiding place but it was limited. He quietly cursed himself because he knew regardless of who it was there was potential for all the hard work he had poured his life into and the sacrifices he had made to be undone, right here and now. If he was discovered in the house that would be it, it would be all over because Hugh would find out and his true identity would become known to everyone.
The voices reached the top of the stairs and as Connor peered through the gap in the door he could see that he had been wrong to assume the babysitter was not here. Not only was she here looking after Ava but her boyfriend was with her.
“I will check Ava and you check the rooms” the babysitter was heard saying as Connor inched away from the door.
Drawing a deep breath he listened as the boyfriend could be heard making his way down the landing, opening and closing doors obviously doing what he was told and checking the rooms. He was only young with a David Beckham mohican style haircut and dressed in trendy clothes but Connor had already made up his mind what he was going to do if he was seen but hoped it would not come to it. He watched as the door handle slowly turned then the door opened. Silence descended as Connor could hear the breathing of the young lad a few inches away from him, the
thickness of the door the only thing separating them. As quick as it had opened the door was shut again and Connor’s assumption that no one ever looks behind doors when checking rooms was correct. A few more opening and closing of doors could be heard before the voices slowly faded back down stairs. Connor checked his watch and realised he already been in the house half an hour so needed to be quick and get the hell out of there. Memorising the number of the safe was easy, what with Hugh always being distracted and talking and bragging about things whenever he opened it in front of Connor. The safe clicked open and Connor flicked through the pile of papers until he found the piece he was looking for. Quickly folding it and placing it in his jacket pocket he closed the safe and quietly made his way along the landing. All but one door was closed and as Connor passed it he could not resist glancing in.
There lay in her small bed and snoring was sweet little Ava. Connor could see that the baby monitor was on even though she was now five years of age, so everything could be heard which quickly explained why the babysitters had been alerted to the slightest noise. Carefully and stealthily Connor stood over her and watched as her angelic face was expressionless, her mind and body sleeping oblivious to the horrors of the world. Leaning closer in towards her Connor felt the urge to stroke her face but knew he risked waking her. This was the one thing Hugh did have and which Connor was totally Jealous of, a child to watch growing up and a child that would love him no matter what terrible things he had done. It was a dagger through the heart to stand there and watch with intimacy the total innocence of a child, the purest form of a human and something Connor would aspire to when this was all over, a family of his own maybe.
Like a flash in the mind Connor’s emotions changed from one of adoration of something so loving to one of disgust. It quickly dawned on him who Ava was, whose child she was and even though she had done him no harm he slowly moved away at the realisation of letting his mind slip into what he might consider weakness. If little Ava awoke now she would be terrified at the expression on Connors face, a man filled with turmoil and vengeance staring at her with dark beings hiding behind his eyes.
His thoughts repulsed him as he slipped out through the door and checked that his route out of the house was clear. The distinct noise of the TV and a film being watched could be heard coming from the lounge area as Connor closed the front door behind him. Flagging down a taxi on the main road Connor climbed in checking his watch and raised his eyebrows at how long he had been.
“Oh well!” Connor sighed to himself.
“Is this ok for you sir?”
“Yes that’s fine thank you”
Connor paid the fare and walked a few yards to the entrance to the bar.
“Here he is at last. Where have you been?”
“I’m sorry guys I got held up” said Connor apologetically.
“Well you missed the main course so you will have to go straight to the pudding” Said Keith.
“Well you are just in time to discuss the party next week Connor and let’s hope you can be on time for that”
As Sarah said this, Connor looked at Hugh with a devious smile on his face that was hard to hide behind his glass of wine. Hugh stroked Sarah’s neck lovingly and then Connor watched as they kissed drunkenly.
His smile grew larger and only he knew why.
Chapter 10
The sun was shining through the curtains as Hugh and Sarah lay and listened slightly hung over, to Ava playing with Clare the babysitter downstairs. They looked at each other smiling as Clare prepared to take Ava out into the garden to play. Clare always stopped the night at the house when they both went out drinking and Hugh and Sarah were both happy to pay her nanny fees when they had late nights out and got drunk.
“What are you up to today” asked Sarah as she placed her right arm and right leg over Hugh’s body and stroked the hairs on his chest.
“I was going to pop over to see father only he seems really pissed about a letter he has received from the Inland revenue”
“Is everything ok?”
“Oh yes but you know what he is like. He hates anyone prying into his business”
“What time are you going?”
“What time is it now?”
Sarah checked the clock by the side of the bed.
“It’s eight thirty”
“I have two hours then”
At that the door downstairs could be heard slamming as Clare and Ava made their way into the garden.
“Well we have time for a bit of fun then” said Sarah as she climbed on top of Hugh who seemed to be slipping back into the unconscious world.
Hugh squinted through tired eyes as Sarah removed her black silk vest top she had slept in and pushed her breasts in Hugh’s face.
“If you think you are going back to sleep you have another thing coming”
“What’s got you all wound up?” asked Hugh trying to push Sarah’s long dark hair from his face.
“Are you complaining?” replied Sarah who was now sliding down the bed so as to remove Hugh’s boxer shorts, the daylight making her slim tanned body look even browner than normal.
“No it’s just that we didn’t get into bed until half past three which means.......oh my god that feels good” moaned Hugh as he felt his penis go warm in Sarah’s mouth.
This went on for a few minutes until Hugh’s moans became louder, then it suddenly stopped as Hugh watched as Sarah fell back on the bed, placed her legs in the air and slowly removed her knickers and threw them at Him. In a flash Sarah had climbed on top of him and was writhing in ecstasy as Hugh gripped her buttocks to try and control the speed but it was too late. Her little show had wound him up too much and he could not hold back any longer. He was lucky because Sarah was also extremely turned on and within seconds both had collapsed on the bed in an orgasmic heap.
A few seconds went by before either of them spoke, each of them submersed within their own thoughts.
“Do you get the feeling that we were so meant to be” asked Sarah who was also now sleepy as they both lay staring at the ceiling struggling to keep their eyes open.
“Definitely we’re so meant for each other” replied Hugh who seemed to be still recovering from the few minutes of pleasure.
“Mummy, daddy” came the sound of a child’s voice trotting along the landing at the top of the stairs.
They both quickly threw the duvet cover back over their naked bodies before Ava entered the bedroom. The door flew open and in she ran, jumping straight onto the bed, throwing the flowers she had picked with Clare from the garden onto the floor.
“Good morning sweetheart” said Sarah kissing Ava on the top of her head as she threw her arms around her mum.
