A Beautiful Dream: The Dream Trilogy Page 18

by Samantha Barrett

“Nico, please you have to help him, I am begging you, please!” Tears were streaming down my face. I couldn’t lose Kai. Nico looked sick with grief. “Why the hell aren’t you helping him, Nico? He’s your fucking friend! Cast a fucking spell or something!” I shouted. He just looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“I can’t heal the dead, Ryan. There is nothing I can do.” I wanted to argue with him, but I could see he was just as angry and heartbroken as I was. I tore my gaze away from Nico and looked down at my strong and courageous vampire. I couldn’t stop the tears falling.

“Do not cry for me mi amor, I will see you again” he sounded so certain, almost like a promise.

“I love you, Melakai. I always wished you were real. And when I finally got my wish granted, I wasted so much time. I am so sorry, Kai. I swear on all that is holy in this world that I will avenge you and make anyone who hurt you suffer. You have my word.” I leaned down and kissed his cold, chapped lips. And then it all went black.

I awoke next to Nico on the bed. Before anyone could say anything, Nico grabbed me and pulled me into his embrace. I started crying—great heaving sobs. The dream ended because Kai was gone. She fucking killed him.

“I am so sorry, we couldn’t save him,” Nico stuttered out.

“Wait, what the hell do you mean? You couldn’t save who, Nico? Where the fuck is Kai?” Dom was shouting at Nico, I could hear in his voice he knew the answer to his own question, but he didn’t want to believe it.

Nico had to answer for us. “We couldn’t save Melakai. They killed him.”

I drew in a steadying breath. I could feel the lump in my throat and had to push past it. “We need to unlock my powers and I need to train. We are going to war, and we are going to kill every single one of those fucking sons of bitches, and my sister is at the top of the list.”

  Epilogue

  Nico

I held her sobbing form for over an hour. I understand her heart is broken for the loss of my brother, whom she thinks she loves. She has no idea what she wants, but I will be the one to show and guide her through all this. Now she is finally sleeping, her beautiful long brown hair fanned out behind her. Jackson and Dom haven’t left the room. They each sit in the single high back chairs, their eyes glued to my girl. Their grief clear on their faces, they are hurt by the loss of Kai. We all are, we just lost our brother.

“Jackson, I need a favor.” Jackson reluctantly pulls his stare from Ryan.

  “What do you need, Nico?”

“I need some of your men to find my sister. Kai set her free.” I can hear both Jackson and Dominic’s sharp intake of air. Neither of them expected those words to come from my mouth, especially not after learning of Kai’s death. I don’t know how Kai knew where she was or how even set her free, I owed Melakai a debut. He fulfilled the vow he made to me seventeen years ago.

“You have my word. I’ll go myself and make sure she is okay.”

“Jax, I’ll go with you,” Dom said. I thanked both my brothers as they exited the room and shut the door. Now I finally have a moment alone with my girl.

“When you wake, I will tell you everything, my love. You are so much more than you even know.” I move my free hand to my back pocket and feel the outline of the envelope. I stole the letter her dad wrote her. I never opened or read it, but I couldn’t leave it there when I snuck into her room to see her. I am no thief, but I also didn’t want her bitch of a sister getting her grubby hands on it. This letter may contain information that we can’t afford Stevie to have. Before I can continue my train of thought, the door opens and Aurora walks in.

  “Have you told her, Nico?”

“No, I will tell her when the time is right.”

“You need to tell her immediately. She deserves to know the truth.”

“Her heart is broken right now, and if I drop this bomb on her, she will hate me more than she already does.”

“Stop being so selfish, she has a right to know!”

“That is not your fucking secret to tell!” I’m shouting now; I need to calm down and keep quiet or risk waking Ryan.

“Tell her the truth, and do it soon, or I will, Nico.”

“I’ll tell her as soon as you tell Jax that she isn’t really his mate.” I hear her gasp, and her pale blue eyes turn stormy.

“I’ll tell Jackson the truth as soon as you tell Ryan you are her future husband. You can also tell her the truth about where her mother really is, while you’re at it. I’m sure she would love to know how close she is to her abuser.”

Oh, fuck. I am so fucking screwed.
